Musician Jill Sobule is taking things into her own lubed-up hands!
The I Kissed A Girl one-hit wonder is turning to fans for help with with her next record.
Sobule has set up a website where fans can donate money to her album effort.
Yeah, she's practically begging!
Jill's goal is to raise $75,000. In one month she's already raised $54,000.
Hey, begging works!
Contributors can choose a level of pledges ranging from the $10 "unpolished rock," which earns them a free digital download of her disc when it's made, to the $10,000 "weapons-grade plutonium level," where she promises "you get to come and sing on my CD. Don't worry if you can't sing — we can fix that on our end."
For the $500 "gold level," Sobule will mention your name in a song, maybe even rhyme with it. The $750 "gold doubloons level" is "exactly like the gold level, but you give me more money."
For a $5,000 contribution, Sobule said she'll perform a concert in the donor's house!
She set the $75,000 goal because she wanted to do things right. Well-known producer Don Was has agreed to work with her, and she expects friends like Cyndi Lauper and John Doe to sing with her. She also needs to pay for making and distributing the CDs, and promotion to publicize it.
This experience has allowed Sobule the opportunity to really get to know her true fans. The few hundred she has.
Sobule always let the business people do their thing while she concentrated on being the artist.
"I lived like that forever and this time, this is fun," she said. "This is creative."

this is a legitimate website, its a new way to get artists to produce an album without having to go through labels. i saw the owner speak a few months back, there are good intentions behind it.

I think that's a wonderfully creative idea! The music industry is changing faster than a record company exec can choke down his last meal of fois gras, and it takes creativity and vision like this to move beyond the outdated model proffered by the RIAA. I salute her!

and i was at Largo in L.A. to see someone else, and she opened and her stuff was great! and then she talked about how she had that one hit song - and i kept thinking "wow…she's way better than that one silly song!"

Thank you for posting information on the lovely Jill Sobule! She's been around for years now, but gets little to no media attention, despite her dark humored brilliant lyrics and melancholic bittersweet tunes.
As a starving artist, I identify with Jill Sobule and hope she raises the money she needs!
Haha! I used to do her hair and makeup. She is incredibly sweet and actually does alot of great NYC shows that loser 90210s might not appreciate.

this is a very difficult business and anybody over 30 is considered dead by the industry. i mean, annie lennox was just LET GO by her label. what kind of world is this? i give her a lot of credit for her moxie.

The music business is changing, and artists like Jill Sobule are taking creative ways to produce their music without major labels. I like her — I like her voice, and she writes songs that reflect our culture with a lot of humor.

These are very difficult times for artists. Do you realize that most artists are getting continually ripped off by the RIAA? Most only get somewhere between $0.05 and $0.10 per CD sold. Less for iTunes albums sold (more like $0.03 to $0.05). The RIAA and iTunes have both even said they want to start giving LESS to the artists!! (while the RIAA is continuing to sue people for downloading music "on behalf of the artists" (none of which have received compensation from the RIAA via the lawsuits won)).
Jill is doing what she has to do to continue to be able to produce music. I'm one of her biggest fans (unfortunately, I'm not one of her richest fans…I'm only going to be able to afford to donate $100.00 or so) and plan to donate to her soon.
Look at the amount she's already gotten and think about that. That's PLENTY of fans who love her and want to hear/own another album. So much so that they are willing to donate to produce it. These aren't the jerks who are just downloading stuff on bitTorrent (and if they are, at least their donation would likely compensate for that).
The best part about this is that Jill (and the musicians who play on this CD with her) will be able to make ALL the profits from the sales of this CD! There is nothing different between this and Radiohead leaving their label and selling their CD on the internet (and allowing fans to name their own price…yes, many paid only a penny but their average download purchase price was roughly $8.00 American, so many paid way more).
Go pick on Britney, Lindsay and all the rest of the over-processed fake singers and leave the real artists (who write their own material and actually sound the way they sound on the record) who don't need to show their lady parts (or drink and drive and get thrown into rehab) to get publicity.
