Drew Barrymore is donating $1 million to charity.
Of her own money!!!
The actress gave the gift on Monday to the World Food Programme (WFP) and the funds have been earmarked to feed thousands of schoolchildren in Kenya.
Barrymore announced her very generous contribution on the Oprah show.
Drew is a WFP ambassador against hunger and her gift kicks off the agency's $3 billion "Fill the Cup" campaign that aims to feed 59 million hungry school children in developing countries for a year.
WFP hopes the United States will be able to donate enough money to feed 10 million of those children.
"I have seen with my own eyes what a difference a simple cup of nutritious porridge can make in a child's life," said the Barrymore, who has traveled to Kenya twice in the past two years for WFP. "It helps them learn, stay healthy and sets them on track for a bright future. I urge everyone — everywhere — to help WFP 'Fill the Cup' for hungry children, and make hunger history."

The answer to your question is quite simple really and you are partially correct in saying publicity. How many people had heard of this charity before her announcement? How many more people may now donate to this charity and follow her lead? Like I said, quite simple really. She's obviously passionate about the cause and wanted to promote it.

Because they can eat. And since they can eat, they have more room to feed more kids. So they reproduce in the good times, and starve in the bad times.
More mouths = more food they need. And what happens when the food runs out from america? The babies starve. They starve. Then we see them starving and we give them MORE food.
Then guess what happens. THEY MAKE MORE THIRD WORLD BABIES.

I've read everyone's comments and agree with so many…..that is AWESOME that she did that (HUGELY) but……..when she announced the actual amount of her donation, it did sound rather self-serving and "hey look at me……I donated a million dollars to starving children in Africa!" truly, a million bucks is nothing to sneeze at no matter WHO you are……but to the "average Joe", a million dollars to Drew is like a THOUSAND dollars. but still…..she did it when she didn't have to so……kudos! but I would have been much more impressed had she either actually gone there and helped out (it's easy to give money……your TIME is what's most valuable…..) or helped out needy areas in our own country. just my $.02.

Why donate publicly? Well, maybe it will cause a trend, inspire people, and more people will do so, resulting in less poverty overall! More and more people should donate publically both here and abroad.
