3-9-cover.jpg

The gorgeous and generous Natalie Portman is on the cover of the new issue of The New York Times Magazine.

And she's talking about the buzzword of the day: philanthropy.

Everybody's giving back, and so are we!

Here's an exclusive excerpt from N. Port's article:

In 2004, Natalie Portman, then a 22-year-old fresh from college, went to Capitol Hill to talk to Congress on behalf of the Foundation for International Community Assistance, or Finca, a microfinance organization for which she served as ‘‘ambassador.’’ She found herself wondering what she was doing there, but her colleagues assured her: ‘‘We got the meetings because of you.’’ For lawmakers, Natalie Portman was not simply a young woman — she was the beautiful Padmé from ‘‘Star Wars.’’ ‘‘And I was like, ‘That seems totally nuts to me,’’’ Portman told me recently. “It’s the way it works, I guess. I’m not particularly proud that in our country I can get a meeting with a representative more easily than the head of a nonprofit can.’’

Now, in the era of People and the E! channel and the global swarm of paparazzi, stars shape themselves, and their brands, through their own public acts. And their audience is not just fans but everyone; a star’s life is a kind of public movie. You have to do something with all that attention. As Portman says, ‘‘If they’re going to follow me around and take pictures, I’d rather talk about Finca than what dress I’m wearing or who I’m dating or whatever nonsense people care about.’’

She has stopped doing commercials. ‘‘I want to be comfortable and proud of everything I do,’’ Portman says. She has designed a line of vegan shoes. She doesn’t want to be controversial, but she does want to be taken seriously. When we spoke, Portman was about to leave for London on a publicity tour for her current film, ‘‘The Other Boleyn Girl.’’ Trying to be obliging, I said, ‘‘Would you like to say anything about your movie?’’ Portman laughed and said, ‘‘No.’’

Bravo Perez!! Thank you for bringing this to light… not only has she been doing this work without photo ops and lots of press, she is not alone in her philanthropic work — there are other celebs too doing a lot to help.

At first, I didn't think she could pull off Anne in "The Other Boleyn Girl". Now, I think she was perrrrfect for the part. She is not only gorgeous, she has a certain respectable quality. Its so nice to see young actors and actresses who have got it together.
As for Britney, Lindsay, and all those other hoes: FTP!!!
Oh..and quit it with the first…grow up lamoes!

I haven't seen such overacting in a movie since Sofia Coppola in Godfather 3. She was so overwrought in The Other B Girl that it was astonishing. Of course, she was having to haul around that miserable ScarJo, who looked lost in most scenes. Okay for her reward for all this goodness, I promise to buy her something to eat.

He handed her a dozen roses. 11 real. 1 fake. He said i'll love you until
the last one dies.. She gladly accepted them. But when she took them, She said "one of these is fake!" He said "exactly. that's because i will love you forever." If you post this in another city in 5 minutes, someone that you want to love you forever, will message or call you

why is it that celebrities are all now "ambassadors" for everything? angelina jolie, george clooney, alyssa milano… i'd like to know what the criteria is… do the famous get preferential treatment or something?

  30. Kevin says – reply to this

    30

I haven't read the story but I doubt she donates a penny. Most of these pathetic celebrities love to talk about how fabulous they are and how much good they are doing but the reality is all about personal publicity and narcissism and they never donate hard cash. They do more harm than good since they abandon their cause of the moment the second they get bored. Sorry, but few of these hollywood people are truly philanthropists (or philanthropic for that matter). They're just trying to suck more attention.

I can't stand Natalie Portman. She's a hypocrite and can't even act. Bravo to everyone, including her, for using celebrity to bring awareness to a good cause, but please Perez, stop the Natalie Portman worship!

    36

Finally, a class act. She's classy, a great actress, highly intelligent and she cared about the environment and animals rights, before these issues were "hip" in Hollywood.

One of my favourite actresses and someone worthy to be called that, unlike all the other talentless starlets calling themselves actresses.

  37. Donovan says – reply to this

    37

Natalie has started to whore herself out for a movie buck. Her roles lately seem to be about how nude she can get. Oh look at Natalie, she's all grown up now. In Darjeeling she looked like a little boy that has been starved with her ribs all sticking out.
Most "actresses" now are just well paid strippers or whores. Natalie has joined the ranks.

  38. Kim says – reply to this

    46

i absolutely adore and admire natalie portman, but something she said is extremely poignant here: "‘I want to be comfortable and proud of everything I do". some people in the world are fortunate enough to afford integrity and choose to be involved only in things that they support (whatever that is, from worthy causes to silly ones like fucking dolphins). i'm afraid there will be a trend where philanthropy and humanitarian efforts become something that only the rich can afford to perform.

  47. THE TAX MAN SAYS: says – reply to this

    47

THEY GIVE BECAUSE IT'S A FUCKIN' TAX WRITE OFF. IF YOU MADE AS MUCH AS THE STARS, YOU'D WANT TO CONTRIBUTE AS MUCH AS FEESIBLY POSSIBLE TO CHARITABLE CAUSES, AS WELL, TO AVOID TAX PENALTIES. LET'S TELL IT LIKE IT REALLY IS. DO GOODERS, "AMBASSADORS"… CRY ME A RIVER…

  48. Mary says – reply to this

    48

She hasn't donated a dime to a charity. She's all talk. A wannabe Angelina.

. . and in the looks department? please, there's absolutely nothing remarkable about her — plain, plain and more plain. No one would give her a second look until they found out she was Jewish and the Jews in hollywood rallied behind her and shoved her image down the throats of stupid americans. Way to be gullible.

  49. bianca says – reply to this

    49

Since she can act…she's a genius?? I bet she was a huge dork in high school. Who in cares about what she thinks?!

  50. Ted says – reply to this

    50

LOVE it when people with expansive levels of wealth say "give!" Because they give 1% of their annual income and that's 350% of the average person's. A person making min wage gives 25% of their income (a HUGE sacrifice) and no one gives a shit. Relative stupidity. Celebs should be required by law to give a certain percentage of their money away to a worthy cause of their choice because their profession is so ridiculous.

there should be a law against allowing people with nails like that have photos in magazines!!!!!

is she the recipient of a featured charity? aging hookers that can't retire?

  56. BadGirlGoneGood says – reply to this

    56

SHE'S WRONG. I have been working in government affairs for 6 years - Senators and Congressman are often HAPPY to meet with heads of non-profits or even just staff people ALL THE TIME. They very often VISIT non-profits and other organizations in their districts BECAUSE THAT'S THEIR JOB. I am NOBODY and I don't donate hundreds of dollars to any member of congress but I have gotten meetings with several members. The reason why she got a meeting with those members is YES, because she is famous and having someone like that around adds a little excitement to a boring government job. As long as an office or member thinks someone has something important or relevant to say - again, it's their job to listen. She needs to get over herself a bit…she isn't special because she got a meeting with a freaking Congressman. whoo-hoo, they meet with hundreds of people a month…not all of them are famous or rich or even interesting.

Ah so it is possible for a celeb to suppport and work for a cause without being trailed around by a media crew.
Her Harvard degree makes her far better educated than most celebs and actually smarter than most Americans. Certainly smarter than the fame and attention hungry, wanna be do gooder, Angelina. I mean really is there a charity function or charitable act she's done that isn't publicized?

By the way Perez, what have you done to actually give back? Is there anything you've ever done that isn't all about you?
