Another reason could be the existence of a narcissistic personality in a husband who believes that because of 'who he is', he absolutely deserves free reign on the opposite sex regardless of marital status, and that society's ethical norms or boundaries do not apply to him, as he feels he are 'special'. He creates his own conditional ethics for himself to suit himself. I'm sure Spitzer's wife is devastated, but she's made of strong stuff. These scenarios do not reflect on the woman, but on the individual breaking the vows. They would do it no matter who they were married to.
