I know this seems like a cruel slaughter however if we didn't control the population than many other animals the seal feeds on would become extinct. The seal population is out of control, and in most cases it is done humanely, although yes, there is some cruelty involved in other instances. I think its a question of HOW it is done…

Hey Perez!
I love you and everything you do but you have got ot lay off the Seal Hunt! What's next? Save the chickens? They are cute when they are babies too! (Even though it is illegal to hunt white coats, people seem to out them front and center on their websites) The seal population needs to be controlled. I agree they need to stop clubbing seals and only a small percentage actually are. This hunt is a source of employment. The seals infringe upon the population of other ocean life such as cod. The hunt needs to happen. I'm suprised at you. I hope you read the comments about your posts and get informed perez! PLEASE! (still love you though!)

Maybe if you want to announce your employer's name you should make sure you know how to spell first. I'm sure the government is happy to see that the people they hire to MONITER population rates spells at an eighth grade level.

Anyways, even if the seal population needs to be kept under control, I'm fairly certain that your employers should be able to find a less cruel way to go about it.

I hope the next group you want to support are the sealers. Do you wear leather? Do you think all cows are killed humanely?? Sure, seals are cute. The baby seals however are not hunted by Cdn sealers because it is illegal. And while you're at it, add fishermen to your list of causes. The overpopulation of seals are eating all the fish and killing their livelihood. And maybe if you have some extra, you could send some of the donations to the families in Newfoundland and other areas that sealing and/or fishing is a way of life.. maybe then, the mothers and fathers wouldn't have to leave the province to support them.

I totally agree with your wanting to support a good cause. I click the links everyday. But please consider the source of the ’cause' and the detrimental effects it could have on people.

I am SOOOOOO happy that you put this on here, this is something that the world needs to know more about. The US government has already banned seal products from the US and so have many other countries. It is not true that the seal population needs to be controlled, the people that are killing the seals are commercial fisherman on the off season that want to make more money. The seals are killed for fashion. All this information can be found on the website. People need to do their research before coming on here and saying that the seal hunt serves a good purpose.

The seal hunt is a livelyhood. Baby seals are NOT killed and the seals are NOT just killed for their fur, we actually eat seal up here. Ever had a flipper dinner? It's delish. Protest the way they seals are killed if you must but don't protest the hunt. It is necessary to control the population and the seals are used just as a cow or sheep would be. And please, stop using the baby seals to further your uninformed cause, maybe if calves were as cute you'd be protesting the beef industry.

While I agree that seals can be cute, I think this should not be the reason why a government decides to permit or forbid hunting. As other people said, there's a purpose to seal hunting and, moreover, there's already an excessive number of seals that eat certain kinds of fish. After that, people will complain that there are no more cods, but that's because there are way too many seals! I'm not saying I hate Perez or anything, but I wholeheartedly disagree with this cause. To me, those campaigns just seem like a big deal made out of nothing. Get your facts right and consider both sides before publishing articles and telling people what to think.

We all know, well those of us who bothered to find out know, that the seal hunt is necessary and that it part of a culture in which it is much the same as every other animal/meat industry; animals are killed and their meat and pelts are used. Also, clubbing is no longer part of the seal hunt and hunting seal pups is illegal and not done. So the only people who should have a problem with this are the vegetarians out there, in which case, I respect your belief, but kindly don't force them upon me, or others. As to the US human society and all their propaganda, if you believe everything they say without looking elsewhere for information, you are ignorant. And really, don't you have enough problems in your own country without worrying about Canada? Oh, and what about the bear hunters and caribou hunters? shouldn't you be going after them…THAT's a sport hunt at least. Guess What: The majority of the fisheries in Atlantic Canada (that's Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, etc. for the Americans) are owned by Norwegians. I would challenge you to find any "goods" made with baby seal pelts in Newfoundland/Labrador or Nova Scotia. It's illegal there and in the rest of Canada to have seal fur boots, etc.
The Canadian government should PAY the fisherman/sealers the miserable amount of money they make risking their lives out on the ice. This investment would pay off in goodwill and tourism dollars. This is yet another instance of the Canadian government raping the poor island of Newfoundland and victimizing her people.

Here's a question. Out of everyone who has posted for or against the hunt how many of you have been there and experienced what really goes on? I am not saying that I have been there and I am not say it should or shouldn't happen. But, it is true that the white coats or the "cute little baby ones" are illegal to kill. Also, all of these celebrities that have been there to photograph the seals are only taking pictures of these babies it gives an unrealistic portriat of what seals are being killed. Personally, I would not be able to kill a seal, baby or adult. But maybe someone should find and read unbiased facts before they post things like "Think about the poor fishermen who count on this as part of their livlihood." or "Think about the poor cute baby seals being clubbed to death."

well it does say that they only count on it as a small fraction of their livelihood. they mostly rely on fishing. either way, no animal should be killed like that. watch some of the videos… it shows them club them once (they are supposed to confirm that they are dead, which they don't) and then "hook" them… they are then dragged back to the boat still squirming and fighting, then they are skinned alive.

so, whether they totally ban or make the restrictions more stringent… it's disgusting and wrong and something needs to be done.

I think it's great that you're bring attention to such a horrible thing going on. It's one thing to kill animals for food, but for fashion- it makes me sick. And on top of it all, our ever-warming climate is speeding up this process of disappearing seals. I hope people take this seriously and wake up to what's going on around us.

If you live in Atlantic Canada you can become a member and if you live elsewhere you can become a supporter. If you think seal pups aren't being killed you are very wrong. White coats are no longer clubbed but as soon as they start to malt, even a little, they can expect a pick axe through their skulls from a man with the IQ of 85. They are still only weeks old when most of the seals are killed. They are not used for meat like animals in the meat industry. The carasses are left on the ice after all the massacre is done. Did I mention this all takes place on public property that belongs to the good Canadian people and not just a backward few in Newfoundland? We need to create better opportunities for these people, real jobs that don't require brutalizing the environment.

Only some fishermen's families and some aboriginal communities consume seal products. More than 99% of the meat is left to waste. THIS HUNT IS ABOUT MONEY AND SEAL PELTS/FUR. All the people who say that this hunt is necessary are being brainwashed by the Canadian government. In no way is this hunt necessary as the seals are not overpopulated and they only pass through Canada for a small window of time to have their babies. This is great, thank you so much. Everyone knows these baby seals, just a few weeks old, are killed by fisherman as an off season activity when fishing is over for year. Fisherman make 95% of their income catching fish and only 5% killing these wonderful baby seals. This could be one of the great ecotourism woners of the world but not while fishermen bludgeon these seeals for their skins.

We applaud you, Perez Hilton. This antiquated slaughter must end now - these animals are being killed for their fur - pure and simple. The Canadian government constantly tries to shift the blame to them for the decline in cod stocks, when it is the government to blame for overfishing! The U.S. has already spoken out against this cruelty with its strong Marine Mammal Protection Act and U.S. House of Representatives just passed an unanimous resolution condemning the hunt. And, the EU is very close to banning this terrible practice. It is the fishermen that kill the seals and it represents a mere 5% of ther income - most of their income comes from fishing and the U.S. is the largest importer of Candian seafood. Please join the 3500 companies and 550,000 individuals that have pledged to avoid Canadian seafood until this hunt ends for good. Newfoundland could create a fantastic and lucrative ecotourism industry just as they did with whale watching when they ended whaling in the 80s. That would be a win-win for the seals and the fishermen. And, yes, it is illegal to kill whitecoats, but baby seals can be legally clubbed when they begin to molt - at about 12 days of age.

Hats off to Perez Hilton for adopting this as a worthwhile cause. Even if the laws were followed, this hunt can't be made humane. There are few enforcement officers and the economic imperative for sealers is to imobilize (wack in the head) as many seals as possible as quickly as possible and clean up the carnage later. This may be econonmic but it can never be made humane. But worse, this brutal slaughter is a stain on Canada's image, and few believe that killing baby seals for their fur is a nice 21st century occupation. It's time for Canada to end this now.

To say that baby seals are not killed is ludicrous. The moment a pup begins shedding her white coat - usually at 12 days of age - she can legally be killed. 96% of all seals killed are between the ages of 12 days and 3 months, with the majority being younger than one month old. At this age, they are not yet eating solid food, cannot swim, escape or defend themselves against the sealers. To suggest that these pups are "self-reliant independent adults" is ridiculous.

At the end of the day, the age of the victim does not matter - regardless of age, all seals feel the same fear, pain and desperate will to live.

This entire seal hunt is a big scam for the wildlife organizations, and it's just another issue for celebrities to go crazy over, when they know little of the actual statistics/facts of the matter. I know everyone has a strong opinion on this topic, but there's no need to threaten each other and say awful things to perfect strangers.

I think what you're doing is GREAT! The slaughter of seals has nothing to do with overpopulation or the need for food. It is simply a cruel means of some ignorant people to make money. The animals suffer tremendously and a lot of the time are wounded and slip below the ice to suffer and die. Anyone that still believes in this slaughter is a complete ignorant waste of air! The slaughtering of seals has nothing to do with population control. The animals in the wild have their own means of population control. The slaughtering of seals is done for money made by their fur and fat is used for most beauty products.

Seal hunting is a sin. The killing of any living flesh according to GOD is a sin. Seal hunting does nothing to stimulate Canadian economy. It makes up less than half of one percent. The Inuit people of North America have been hunting seals for centuries. Archeological evidence indicates that the Native Americans and First Nations People in Canada have been hunting seals for at least 4,000 years. But we are a civilized peoples. This kind of activity is barbaric and unnecessary by todays human standards and morals. I see seal hunters as sadist serial killers that haven't branched out to the human population YET!
Any animal abuse is horrid. Those who continue to thrive on others pain will burn in hell for an eternity.

Seal hunters only use the coats of fur. The "blubber" some have mentioned comes from whales. Get your facts straight. The bodies of these seals are left in the snow and aren't used for anything.

yes i know the real reason isn't about controlling the population, but the canadian government lies and tells everyone that is the reason. they use that as an excuse for why they are allowing more seals to be murdered. everyone should go watch the videos on myspace and u tube of seal slaughters. it's real! they don't care if they are babies or adults, they kill them all. it makes me sick. they're all fucken assholes! i hope they all die as violently as the seals did.

Well, I can see that some remain blissful in the land of the ignorant…THE SEAL POPULATION IS FAR FROM OVER-POPULATION…! The seal hunts are NOT for population control of the seals!

If they hunt a couple of month out of the year, they get to sit on their a$$ and draw unemployment from the Canadian Govt. so this is NOT about feeding your family and a sole source of income!
