When 2 Become 1
Filed under: Media MinuteThe Justice Department has just approved the long in-the-works merger of Sirius and XM Satellite Radio.
Yay for corporate conglomerates!
What impact will this have on the consumer now????

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ..merging???…..NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
i was actually first?…niice

It's the FCC approval that's important.

AM and FM are FREE!!!!!!!!!
Nope! Bad, bad, bad, baaaaaaaaaaaad. And for XM Canada and Sirius Canada, it's HORRIBLE news!!!
hmm. wow.
This won't have any effect on the consumer, the F.C.C. still has to approve the merger before it can go through.
Since this will be a monopoly, they can charge what they want.
hee
yay!
less vatiety in news we're fed
FINALLY!!! Ba-Ba-Boey!!!
Since they aren't spending money on competition with each other it should help lower prices.
LESS VARIETY IN THE NEWS WE'RE FED
clear channel number two???
babba booey, babba booey!! Thank GOD!!
Now you have to wait for the FCC to approve it!!! And we all know how much they like Howard Stern!
I can now get Sirius in my car which came with XM. XM has terrible programming AND commercials! I can get lousy programs and commercials for free — why would I pay for it? So, YAY!
Corporate Conglomerates?
And what about Clear Channel owning 40% of us stations?
Yeah!
forth
Now we won't have to choose. I always wanted one of them, but was leaning towards sirius. It really is a cool thing.
who the fuck cares?
I'd like to merge my batweiner with Perez's butt
Hi people.
4th
Makes sense. why have competition? Lets just consolidate till we cant consolidate anymore.
One airline.
One hospital.
1 network tv station
1 Cable channel.

this is good news! better programming for all and we wont have to listen to retarded terrestrial radio ever again! yaaaaaaay!!!!!
FUCKING FINALLY. it's about time! this is the greatest news ever. both services have some great programming. now i can get the best of both worlds. i am never going back to horrible terrestrial radio.
Oh, spare me! As if either of these companies were about serving the consumer in the first place?!?!?
BOOOOOOOOORING!
AM and FM radio are free. If you can't afford XM or Sirius, don't get it. If you can't afford cable or HBO or Showtime, don't get it. If you can't afford that cup of coffee in the morning, don't do it….or you could get a second job or an education to get a better job. Everyone stop your crying. Life is not free.
I have XM and love it. I have listened to Sirius and hate it. Why Sirius is all name dropping and crap like that. XM has what I like most, the music!
I just don't see this being a good thing. For the consumer or for those who work in the radio feild!
Oh well it was bound to happen sooner or later!!!
Its about time. Both Sirius and XM have good stuff, now I can enjoy all of them….So when is there going to be a Perez Hilton channel? Now that would be good!
Consumers will benefit because these companies will offer their services a la carte, consumers will have all the major sports on one radio system. Not to mention that the companies will be better off financially so they won't have to lay people off to cut costs.
Don't quote the Spice Girls if it isn't about them!
yay for corporate conglomerates?!?!?!?! are you for fucking kidding?
It's great for everyone. Better programing, more choices for subscribers of both services. Hopefully once these two great companies join forces, my Sirius satelite signal will be stronger. I work in the boonies and my signal often cuts out when I pull in the parking lot of my job. The Feds finally do something that benefits the common (wo)man. Yay!
GO HOWARD!!
Thank gawd this is finally happening. I've left XM 3 years ago because I couldn't stand the programming (with the exception of a very few stations) and have been happier with Sirius since then. Now this is happening and I can once again listen to my favourite college football team, my 90's on 9, & Lucy on 54. Life will be great again!
this is terrible news - who says yay for corporate conglomerates?
the consumer is going to have less choice and will therefore suffer higher prices….
bad bad bad
Finally! Now we can pick the channels we want to hear. We've had both in the past (currently have Sirius) and there are channels on both that we really like. I think this is great and maybe now our stock that we own in both companies will finally go up instead of down when its combined.
FINALLY!
THANK GAWD FOR HOWARD STERN!

It's about time. It took over a year and it's not over yet?! The longest merger appoval process in the history of Congress BS!
I'm not thrilled about this because I smell a price hike coming. Secondly, who gives a crap about the FCC? It's just another way for the government to pretend to know what it's doing.
I have and LOVE Sirius. I have listened to XM, and other than the Willie Nelson channel, it sucks!
I'm just waiting to find out that Rupert Murdoch owns both of them……………….
This isnt about screwing the consumer Perez, dont be so synical. Its just smart business for two struggling business plans. XM is great, way better then radio, & its not badly priced about 19.00 for 3 months.
Perez you never get it!
This is a GOOD thing! This is exactly what puts the corp congloms out of business. This is going to KILL ClearChannel. Radio stations across the country are laying off thousands of people everywhere because there is NO revenue in FM.
This merger will give us subscribers more, a la carte programming, better reception, and many more choices. I know people who work at both companies and everyone is REALLY excited about this. My friends at FM however are not so happy, they know this is the death of radio.
Besides most of these DJ's hear of their stuff online anyway so they KNOW they have that competition out there. They wont charge more, it costs them less now without having to compete for audiences and have to bid for on-air personalities.
Im in radio. Trust me.
this is the BEST news ever…had sirius, got a new car that had xm and i cant live w/o howard or jason ellis, missed them so much, hopefully it will not take that long now!!!!
Clear Channel is the Monopoly not this merger… Let people pay for better radio!! Perez we need your support on this.. It's the right thing to do. You can speak freely on Sirius and XM Satellite Radio… Just think.. 10 years ago the internet was being attacked by these same people.. Satellite radio lets people listen without FCC censorship… Please support this!
Mazel Tav!!!
…don't talk about subjects you dont understand, Perez.
ABOUT FUCKING TIME YOU COCKSUCKING HOMO
BABA BOOEY MOTHERFUCKER
Howard Rules! The merger is awesome news for anyone who is a fan of Stern and the other amazing programming that Sirius has to offer to its subscribers! The BEST $13.95 I spend each month, and the price will now likely go down which is even better! Fuck Ryan Seacrest, Corola, and any other shithead on "Free FM"
Boy, Perez, nothing like telling the world how you feel without knowing shit. Not letting this merger go through would definitely put both companies out of business, as they both are operating with huge losses from operations. And besides, if the consumer doesn't want satellite radio, they don't have to buy it. Yet somehow, mergers that have proven to hurt the consumer immensely have gone through in less than 2 months–ExxonMobil, JPMorgan Chase, etc. Seen gas prices lately? Dumb shit.
Re: RLM – Are you a retarded idiot?? It's the same thing for the same price, only more channels!! It's good. And if you don't want it–go to free radio.
Its about time! There have been oil mergers that have taken less time.
people thought getting satellite radio for under $20 a month was a good deal. watch those rates double or more over the next 18 months.
Now Howard Stern will be even richer!! Maybe now Beth O can buy some cheek implants to fill out her horse face.
i listened to the actual debate between the FCC and the broadcasters, and this will be a good thing. better coverage, products, service, programming and on and on. Yeah, i've been waiting for this. and all of your current radios will still work.
Super. Awesome. News.
AND good for the consumer.
Jeez.
Do you homework before you pipe up, kids.
I love Sirius. I really don't think I could bear to go back to terrestrial. It's SO AWFUL. And *variety* on terrestrial? There is none.
Commercial Filled AM and FM SUCK
Baba Booey Motherfuckers
Perez…I love your site and the fact that you actually don't just talk about celebrities shows in posts like this one. People are just too stupid to understand or care…I'm a business student and have actually thoroughly studied both of these companies. LOVE YOU!
tonight is the niiiiiiiight when two become oneeee!
Bubba's back to shocking the puss!!! Long live SIRIUS!!
These companies both throw millions of dollars to people like stern, oprah, martha stewert…. than they cry that they can't survive with competition. I wish the feds would let me and a few of my competitors merge so we can all fix prices
This was really meant to be. It's for sure our destiny.

Re: Eat my PU$$y –
obviously not idiots like you who.
Finally Justice!
Yes! I totally agree with this! Yes!
The FCC won't hold this up. The greater hurdle was the Department of Justice. The National Association of Broadcasters through millions and millions of dollars at lobbying against the merger and tonight I say to them: Fuck you! You bastards find it perfectly acceptable for Clear Channel and GE and Jefferson Pilot and other conglomerates to dominate the airwaves with the bullshit they put out + an ad naseum number of commercials. As a Sirius subscriber long before they were even talking to Howard Stern, I can say he's a very smart guy and a real treat to listen to and fun! And I love some of the XM programming so look forward to a merger of both. Mel K. will run the company and he's been a great bulldog for Sirius as CEO. The option will be keep your programming the way it is now and keep your price the same, or opt in a la carte to the other station's programming for approximately $4 per month. For those of you who love terrestrial radio because it's free, LMAO! I have in a rental car I have to drive for a few days and am reminded of the dark days of radio! THIS ROCKS!!
YEAH !!!!! this is the best news ever. I LOVE SIrius.
Re: Eat my PU$$y – If you "don't CARE," then why the hell did you CLICK to READ the report? JACKASS…DUH!
radio sucks. satellite rocks. satellite will some day dominate, not because of (an imagined) monopoly, but because terrestrial radio blows and soon every new car in america will introduce the uninitiated to the listening wonderfulness that is satellite. I heart Howard! Ba Ba Booey!!
How very cute of you Perez. Copied it off of some news site, probably feeling all proud of yourself with people complimenting you on your supposed intelligence, when you probably don't even know what the FCC stands for. Stick with the celebrity gossip, or open a book before you talk about things you clearly do not comprehend.
I worked for Sirius, & it should actually be better for the consumer. You'll get to pick & choose which channels you want from both XM & Sirius, effectively lowering the price for people who don't listen to 99% of the channels…and more choice for those who want more..lol, just a tidbit of info
Congratulations Mel Karmazin! You stood up admirably against the crooked politicians, lobbyists and political action committees. You didn't let the bastards grind you down. Long live satellite radio. Join the Revolution.
perez, do you know what a conglomerate is?
(no)
also, how is castro holding up?
and people wonder why our economy sucks. pay attention to history people, look at the events that led up to the great depression.
Fucking idiots.
Re: this to reply – You're a fucking idiot. Why would they lower prices when they NOW HAVE NO COMPETITION?!?!? Expect prices to rise. Goddamn take a fucking economics class you inbred hick.
the FCC never goes against the DOJ.
Anyone who says this will not benefit the consumer has no idea what they are speaking of.
This will broaden programming &keep prices at bay. This will work out quite nicely! And the FCC will no doubt follow the DOJ

I was thinking of getting satellite radio, but I wouldn't want to pay more than what the monthly fees are now….monopolies are not good…if they up the fee, then maybe a lot of people would say to hell with this and drop it.
