Whatever Happened To John Hughes???
Filed under: Film FlickersThe L.A. Times just ran this great article about the legacy of the now retired legendary '80s director of such iconic films as The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink, Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Planes, Trains & Automobiles.
It's a very interesting read!

he's using a pen name and wrote part of drillbit taylor i think
was i first? wow guess no one cares about him.
perez's readers suck
Canada loves perez! - P-nasty should come to Toronto for a visit!!!!!!!
I also heard that he was working on drillbit taylor.
who really knows???? or cares … lol
he's GREAT!!!
Last I heard, he's directing adult movies, going by the name of Hugh G. Rection. Probably not true, but that's what I heard. Snicker.
His at home counting all the money he still gets from all of the Home Alone movies.
that article is AWFUL!! poorly written, cites names without their necessity clear, and basically goes NO WHERE! Tell me something I didn't already know before reading that lousy piece? what that John Hughes movies defined a generation? idiotic, sensationalistic TRIPE.
EITHER THERE IS A TECHNICAL PROBLEM
OR
THE VOLUME OF COMMENTS ON THIS IS AN INDICATION OF HOW SHALLOW THE MAJORITY OF PEREZ'S READERS ARE.
AND YES, THE ARTICLE SUCKS.
John Hughes rocked the 80's!
I feel sorry for the youth of today because they don't have such iconic films from their generation like we who were teens in the 80's. Yeah, I f*ckin' said it! I was teenager in the muthaeffin' 80's!
How crazy that he is this incredible recluse now. He's made all of his money and accolades on movies that created the "alternative" generation, and now he chooses to spend his life secluded from the outside world (the ultimate in alternative lifestyles). Maybe, all John ever really wanted was to blend into the crowd, never enjoying the spotlight. Leaving on a high note (well sort of…) may have been a stellar move.
UH HUH….

It's kind of an odd article - it's not about Hughes as he is now, at all. It's about Hughes influence on current films. Interesting, but not exactly a 'what is he doing now' read.
Re: COMMON SENSE – well what is so great about what you just wrote?
Hughes movies were great. They had a very real feel about them, especially if you grew up during the time and were in Jr High/high school.
I don't blame him for getting out. Hollywood is like Perez fans. Totally clueless with no minds of their own. It's why there is so much garbage out there.
It's gotten worse as studios have become corporatized and now have to answer to share holders.
One thing is for sure. John Hughes would have NEVER made Superbad. He didn't have to resort to sick mindless sex jokes to get a laugh or to build a story.
Thank you, Perez.
BUELLER……BUELLER…… BUELLER……..BUELLER
P*Nasty, Thank you for that! As a movie lover you always deliver! You're the best! xox
John Hughes movies defined my teens. I watched "Sixteen Candles" and did not see Molly Ringwald, but myself. This is probably the reason I like Judd Apatow movies so much. I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to watch his movies with me.
yep…this wouldn've been a great read…if i hadn't read almost the exact same article by writer Adam Wahlberg on MSNBC, March 19th.
His movies are good, but overrated. The High School expierience was no where near as dramatic as his films make it out to be.
spy mag used to take the piss outta him all the time
That was one of the best articles i have ever had the opportunity to read about John Hughes! it was very well written and (i hate to admit this) but Courtney love is right! As a producer to invoke that much attention from one generation makes him not only an 80's icon but one of the most prolific producers in movie history.
I loved all his movies! Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club! They were genuinly good movies, without all the crap they put in today's movies. If you haven't seen them, please go out and rent one!
His movies and the accompanying soundtracks were my teenage years !!! I loved every one of them , they gave hope there was live after high school that the geek could actually get the girl and sometimes not getting the girl was the best gift of all. My favorite will always be Some Kind of Wonderful followed very closely by everything else he did. I also believe he married Lea Thompson, someone I truly wanted to grow up and look like and what than man did for making the red headed girl attractive to general population I can't thank him enough. I hope he has a lovely life in Chicago away from the harsh glaring light of Hollywood.
ok people grew up
i thought this was a bad article as well. just "fluff" like someone said before. it was like it was written in four minutes for a college paper. don't say "still" without it referring back to ANYTHING
"one of the best articles"? good lord. please do yourselves a favor, kids, and pick up a time, newsweek, ny times,…anything!! this article isn't an expose, a commentary, or even a "report"; it's simply a couple hundre words of fluff. seriuosly, i've seen better work come from 8th grade journals. this "reporter" should be working for the local pennysaver, not the l.a. times.
love john hughes. i often wondered why he never made any more movies. we could use some more of them with all the crap that is being peddled these days… his movies are definitely transcendent. i was coming of age in the 80's and enjoyed them then; my daughter is 12 and enjoys them just as much now. that says a lot.
I know where he lives. Seriously, you're telling me the journalists and publicists couldn't figure this out? Bullshit. Go to the north shore and ask someone…
He is one of the greatest movie makers of all time. His movies are just as relative today as they were when they first came out.
Hey douchebag Perez..Howard Deutch directed "Pretty In Pink", not Jphn Hughes…get your facts straight
That was a great article. Thanks for the link, I wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

I THOUGHT HE MOVED BACK TO HIS HOMETOWN OF PITTSBURGH PA??
John went to my high school in Northbrook, IL (different years). I moved my junior year in high school, but a lot of my friends are in Sixteen Candles. It's always fun to pop in the DVD and see everyone at 16 again. Ferris Buehler was filmed at my old school. Love and miss John Hughes films!
I may be the only one, but for me John Hugh's movies suck. I certainly did not have any of the experiences that the characters did in Pretty in Pink or The Breakfast Club. Those films were all about conformity, and so formulaic. Definitly a Gen X thing.
He's my dad's neighbor
NPR had a great story about Long Duk Dong yesterday and how much we loved the Donger despite all of the racial stereotypes he embodied
thanks perez!
i'm only 17, 18 in may,
but i can still appreciate a good john hughes movie!
rofl.
sixteen candles and the breakfast club are my favorite movies! =] mmmm…. jake ryan. haha.
He lives on a huge farm located on the Wisconsin/Illinois state line. Once and a while he goes to township meetings, etc. but pretty much keeps to himself.
chicago and beatles references galore…can't beat that!
John Hughes did not direct Pretty in Pink, that movie was directed by Howie Deutch.
I wish he would come back and do more films. I'm so glad I was a teenager in the 80s even if that means I have to be old now, with age comes wisdom!
I wish the people that posted comments on Perez were older and wiser, maybe I'd do it more often. Some of you are serious douchebags. Bender would kick all of your asses.
Don't you
Forget about me
Don't, don't don't don't
Didn't he die a couple of years ago?
That was a great article. John Hughes movies (and their soundtracks) truly define what it was like being a teenager in the 80's. I can remember seeing "Sixteen Candles" the summer before starting high school (1984 God I'm old!) and thinking how much I couldn't wait for high school! Everyone could relate to his characters.
I just goes to show that he's smart enough to keep himself out of the $hit-hole/borg-landscape that Hollywood's become!
i love john hughes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Suburb? Not quite, try Harvard, IL. No joke.
Let's hope he is in good health and enjoying his life.
film is a dirty business full of lots of morons who have more power than the smart and creative people. thus the influx of crapppy movies the last 5 years.
I encountered John Hughes a few times when I worked at a store in the North suburbs of Chicago. My store was right next to his office.
He is a DICK!
Richard Marx lives in the same town, and he looks like a crackhead. His wife's really nice, though.
His work was iconic. He lives in our town and leads a happy normal life. People should stop trying to hunt him down and just admire his work.
I Wikipedia'd him. Interesting, seems he's used a pseudonym to write a few movies, most notably in my opinon is Maid in Manhattan starting J Lo.

He only made those movies to get into Molly Ringwald's pink panties and after numerous failed attempts ran off to the Midwest to find honest work managing the Burger King in Plainfield, IL. It's true! Go there and ask for Jack Hues. I swear!
Fuck yeah. Way to go Billy, don't sell out like Gwen!!!
He's hanging out on his farm on the outskirts of Chicago. My friend's husband works with him, as a writer. They punched out a sitcom, but it didn't get picked up after the pilot.
