How Much Would You Pay For A Movie???
Would you pay $35 to see a movie in a fancy schmancy theater?
Well, some biz investors think that some of you will!
A group that includes the Retirement Systems of Alabama pension fund are sinking $200 million to build 50 luxury movie theaters across the United States over the next five years.
The first two theaters will open up outside of Chicago and Seattle.
Each complex will sport theaters featuring 40 reclining armchair seats with footrests, digital projection and the capability to screen 2-D and 3-D movies, as well as a lounge and bar serving cocktails and appetizers, a concierge service and valet parking.
Is this all really worth $35, though?!
Theaters make their money on concessions so the high priced stuff they'll be peddling - fancy food like sushi- is what industry experts are assuming will make those investors bank. So you'd have to pay inflated food prices ON TOP of the $35 ticket!
Rip off!!

SUCKERS its not gonna work!!
O YEAH FIRST!!!
LOL - that's already happening in Costa Rica, leather recliners, sushi and cocktails seved at your side, only for $10 a seat!
-regular movies for $2.50
FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
fuck yea i would!
so perez, Villa won't let you in huh… LOL..LOL..LOL.. confirms you are in the same ranks as Greasy BeAR & your twin Gummy Bear.
that shit is already too expensive
Rip off is right. Ha
PROBABLY NOT WORTH $35.
THEATER FLOORS WILL ALWAYS BE STICKY! LOL!
They wouldnt invest, if there wasnt a market for it. I`m not saying Im part of that market, but I do love sushi! ;-P
We have those in Iceland…the ticket is 23 $ first time in history we´re cheaper than anyone I think :S
There is a drawback though, in those areas you choose your own seat so you´re usually paying 23$ to sit on opposites ends to your friends….bad choice for datenight, also the screen is too small >3
we have those in mexico and it's $15 to see a movie in the vip cinemas, 35 is too much!
I agree. Dumb Idea.
I live in South Florida and we have a movie theatre like this in Boca - Muvico… they offer you regular seating but you can also buy Premium Seating on the top balcony that has couches and a restaurant attached - I think it's like 20 something a ticket. My boyfriend only likes to go when they offer the Premium seating - it make it a nicer "date night" and much more comfortable.
Oh I hope I'm in the top 10!
To answer the question…hell to the no!
I wont even pay $8
FIRST!~
It'll be worth it if you don't have to sit next to the diseased skank Paris Hilton!!
f**k that i dont like paying $10 for a ticket i wait for it to come out on dvd and buy it for less
FIRST!!
I wouldn't go regularly, but I would go every once in a while for fun with friends.
Hell yeah, I'd totally go! It's already $15 to see a movie with way less comfort, so why not spend an extra 20 for the luxury?
we have movie theatres that serve alcohol drinks and food that only cost 3.50 per movie and Wed nights its 10.50 for a beer food and burger. Not going there.
they already have theaters like that in Philly for only 10 bucks a ticket. I dont think the ticket is supposed to be $35, i think thats the projected goal they have for everyone to spend in total on all their services.
They already have something like that in Boca Raton, FL and it sells out all the time. Muvico has Premier seats that aren't quite $35, but after the bottle of wine, gourmet chocolates and sushi, it comes to about that. You get free popcorn and valet (like that makes up for all the money you spend on everything else).
This is spendy but for an amazing treat and great movie-going experience once in a while….I would consider it!
Oh yes!!! would love that!!! I mean, maybe not every day, but every now and then it would be great. I would do it.
Im from Venezuela and here we have movie theaters like that so that's not newwwww
thats fucking sucks!
This is one Chicagoan who would not be paying that much to see a shit movie…because that is basically what is being made these days…
RIP OFF. You can already get the drinks at places in the US, and for far cheaper, you just have to look a little harder.
they have theater sections like that in Dubai where u can pay a premium to sit in a seperate theater with reclining seats and eat your food on real dinnerware. They also serve food (no cocktails though) in addition to regular fare. It's constantly sold out. But that is Dubai…..
I would pay $35 to keep out the loud people!!!!
I'm totally down with this - I can't wait. I'll go and it will be amazing and will gladly pay the money to be in a nice theatre, with quality people, no kids, and cocktails!
sounds like a dream come true - they're obviously going after the "gay" dollar…..
It's already in Huntsville, AL at the Bridge Street Town Centre. It's only $12 for Prive and well worth it. Here is the theater: http://monacopicturesusa.com/index.html
how about you just go buy a bootleg and then go home and sit in your recliner and do the same exact thing?
you also spend less on a shitty movie that is in no way worth $35 to see.
ABSOLUTELY worth it! it will be too expensive for the ghetto people who talk through the entire movie!
First!!
for 35 I could buy the dvd
I can get 5 movies for $20 and sit in the comfort of my own home. Their plan is stupid and ridiculous. Some people will want to try it out once, but they won't go a second time.
Why did you put a picture of herpes infected Paris on there?
If this were to happen I would actually start going to the movies again. I fucking hate going now with all the little bratty children making noise & the obnoxious teenyboppers. Fuck yeah, I say bring the "adult only" to the theaters. Kids couldn't afford the prices they want (yeah). We already have a theater like this in Redmond, WA & I hear it's really nice. Bring it on!!!
I guess theres gonna be people who are gonna try this once and then never come back, just by curiosity
but im not one of them
There is a theater like this outside Chicago already (I'm not sure if its the one you're referencing) and its nice. I don't believe it costs $35 a ticket there though. But they have big comfy seats, food and booze that you can even bring in the theater-AND they have theaters that are 21 or over so I don't have to listen to whiny brats while I watch my movie…that's worth it to me…
$35 and I gotta share an armrest? I can just fly JetBlue and get the same experience.
I have a hard enough time parting with $10 to see a crappy movie
first
paris who?!?!??!?!??!?!?
why would you pay that much for a ticket? Sorry but us normal people aren't made out of money
first !!
lol woot
Honestly, it would seem like a rip off if you went all the time, but I think its like one of those - "just to go once" things. I would go to see what it's like and then probably not again - if it was really good though, id have to say, lower the price.
They have those theaters in juarex mexico…
Someone has already done this! They have these in Mexico. Coktails, lrather arm chairs, sushi, beer, capuccino, crepes. It is always fulll!
I would never pay more than $10 to see a movie. That is absurd!!!
Weve had this in Mexico for years, reclining leather armchairs, sushi bar and cocktail bar, waiters etcc Its about 20 bucks a ticket, the industry is looking slow…
$35??? Thats cheap compared to what you pay in the UK for our 'gold class' cinemas - and you get a lot less for your money!! On top of that it would take $10 of your american dollars just for some popcorn. Bargain!
We already have that in milwaukee - www.ipicentertainment.com. It's 15$ for the movie, nice seats, popcorn, and valet parking. A total deal.
LOL We have this in New Zealand, Its Called Gold Class & Its 50 Bucks A Seat Opposed To 10 Bucks Normally….Rip Off!
IMO, this is a bad, bad, bad idea. Do these investers have their heads up their asses? Or possibly they are so brain washed by the Hollywood economy that they don't realize that the average American is struggling financially right now…and it's only going to get worse. My husband and I almost never go to the movies now and tickets are "only" $10 each — and we're considered upper middle class folk. $35 per ticket just to sit in a Lazy Boy chair while at the movies??? No way. I can do that at home for just the price of Netflix.
There are already 2 of these in the Chicago burbs. People seem to love them. I believe they come with valet parking, dinner and the movie. Drinks are available.
BAD FUCKIN' IDEA!
They have theaters like that already. And I will say I happily go to those over the cheaper options. Typically you get less teenagers making noise or on cells. Less children crying and a higher class of people in general. So indeed I support this fully.
We have a dinner/theater place here not as fancy as that crap but I like going there just becouse of the chairs and I can eat and not be shoved up close to strangers
But I wouldnt pay $35 for it
We already have these in Australia, We've had them here in Sydney for about 7 years now. Its called "GOLD CLASS" cinema here. WOW America is so beyond on things compared to us. Seriously, you guys should look into it.
I don't like paying $11.95 to go see a film…why would I pay $35? And I hate sushi…
Last year, I watched 'Spiderman 3' at the main movieplex in Bangkok, Thailand. For about $10 American, we got our own lazy boy, side table, 2 drinks, a popcorn, blanket, pillow, excellent sound, a waiter, and were placed in a theatre that had seats for 35 people.
AND it was clean!
Hell NO!~ what do you think money grows on trees~
these people are trying to rip USA off! there is a Muvico Paradise in Boca, FL that has a second floor that services large love seats and caters great food and full bar to you while you watch your movie for only $20. so the $35 is ridiculous!
I would if I have a sound proof booth. I do not like it when I am at the movies and I hear cellphones ringing.
WE ALREADY HAVE ONE IN WELLINGTON,FL
SILVER SCREEN CINEMAS
AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAH
We already have one in Oakville, Ontario CANADA!
perez you couldn't be more worng, Electric Cinema in london is roughly the same price and has a bar, foot rests, gormet food, etc.. minus the valet and sells out nearly every movie!
I would
I don't pay $10 to watch the shitious movies they try and push down our throats now. 80% of films out now are pure SHIT.
We already have that in Texas, it's called Alamo Drafthouse, it's only $10 a ticket, and you get waiter service at your seat.
We have something like that in MA/NH area called Chunky's. You sit in a comfy reclining chair and you can buy restaurant food (desserts, meals, appetizers, etc) and booze but tickets are only like 7 or 8 bucks which is less than a regular movie theatre!
can they guarantee that no one will talk or crinkle their popcorn bag? if so, count me in.
Frankly, the luxury in theaters would be to hear the film rather than the people eating their popcorn and crunching on candy all along…
i love this idea and always thought it would fly!!!!!!!!!! if in the right area for sure. plus the probability of having a bunch of idiots talking and being retarded is far less when you're dealing with peeps who paid $35 to be there
TRYING TO WATCH A MOVIE IN A THEATER FULL OF
A BUNCH OF SUSHI-EATING DRUNKS IS NOT MY IDEA OF A GOOD TIME.
What a terrible idea, and even worse that it is being paid for through Alabama's pension fund. This business is going to sink fast and those citizens of Alabama are going to be left with a pension fund worth $0.
this is funny because 10 years ago a theater like this opened in mexico and they charge 7.50 per ticket and it's the same! leather seats, sushi, cocktails and even seat service!
During the middle of a recession. Brilliant.
It's already $12 a movie as it is.. what's a few dollars for luxury!?
Nothing new! they already have a movie theater here in San Francisco with a bar and you don't have to pay $35.00.
they already have those in Mexico. VIP Movies. And they are $5.00 only. The same price than regular movie theaters. And people still prefer regular theaters.
i don't know who'll want to pay that much, I live in chicago most ppl don't even buy the real movie dvds they buy bootleg, so what would make them think that if a movie is showing in a $10 a ticket theater they would go to theirs for the food when there's sooooo many good restaurants in the area.
i'd definately go! it would keep the riff raff out! and i could enjoy my movie going experience better!
ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT THIS WILL NEVER WORK. THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO WOULD EVEN REMOTELY TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY ARE THE RICH AND EVEN THEY DON'T GO TO THE MOVIES MUCH ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE THE VERY FEW WHO CAN AFFORD AND IN-DOOR THEATRE. WITH ALL THE ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING, NETFLIX, AND LET'S NOT FORGET…CRAPPY HOLLYWOOD FILMS THAT SEEM TO COME OUT OF THE WOODWORK, PEOPLE ARE MORE THAN UNLIKELY TO PAY $35.
This is already being done in San DIego and only costs $12.50. It's called Cinema Under the Stars.
Outside of Chicago? It will totally work, froo froo cachoo out there.
Re: San Francisco – where is this theatre that serves cocktails? i live in sf and i don't know of this!
This is not new. They have it in Atlana. My girl and I used to go all the time. But it's the same price as a regular movie. Food and drinks [beer, wine, everything] is obviously priced like a midscale restaurant. That's what they make their money on.
Seems like a bad move in a recession…but I think it will make $$$ eventually. People are sick of crappy movie theatres with no booze, and bad food. It's all about the pampering experience for many people - so why should the movies be any different?
Screw that! I'll stick to waiting until the dollar movies are out. Seriously, for thirty five bucks I had better be getting a free DVD of the movie I go see, of course with special features, plus free soda and popcorn.
I was thinking about this the other day as I sat uncomfortably in the theatre…$35 sounds like alot tho, however I would pay $20-25.
Yeap, somebody already said we have those in Mexico, and waaay cheaper. You can get a comfortable reclining seat for just 15 USD, and you also can have some fancy drinks and a carb-blast with sushi.
And yeap, one of the biggest cinema chains in Mexico also offers every Thursday a special days for women with toddlers. This service is 10 bucks per ticket and mothers can enjoy a movie without anyother person complaining about children crying. They also receive a package that includes diappers, bay towels and all that stuff that small childrne might need.
we have 3 of those in Panama and they cost $8.00
I can't believe America doesn't already have this sort of cinema. Here in Australia we've had a very similar sort (known as Gold Class Cinema) for years!!! It's very popular, always sells out and it is worth the cost… if its a good film!!!
