Forget art. This is about making money!

Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber is working on on a sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, the longest-running musical in Broadway history.

Webber proclaims, “I’ve made a decision today that I will do The Phantom of the Opera sequel. And I have met with a couple people today who have persuaded me to do it, who I will not reveal, but it’s a very exciting day for me. . . It’s going to be very exciting, and I can reveal that it will be set in New York.”

Oh goodie. New Phantom songs for auditioners to massacre!

Bring back Sarah Brightman!

Awe… I just watched a Sarah Brightman PBS special. She oozes talent. Good taste Perez. The sequel is sad though… if he had any real urge to do this, it would've been done years ago. Obviously someone behind him is pushing for it, but for goodness sake Andrew, grow a pair and stand up for your work!

      34

"… a couple people today who have persuaded me to do it" Rumor is that the couple people are Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford, Crawford recently being in ALW's latest musical The Woman in White. Brightman has been on a decline, is in an upcoming movie musical "Repo" and could use the boost a Phantom sequel would give her.

There ages work well with it too in that the sequel does take place quite a bit after the first show with Sarah and Raul married and with a child, with her a opera diva in Manhattan.

    35. mega says – reply to this

      35

      Sarah Brightman is the QUEEN

      36

Awesome news! I bet money one of the people he's talked to is Emmy Rossum. I remember reading something awhile back where she mentioned she was looking at being in a big Broadway production, but didn't elaborate. I'd pay good money to see her in a Phantom sequel!

    37. Dez says – reply to this

      37

Fuck ALW! Why do you have to re-ruin Phantom AGAIN?! LEAVE THE SHOW ALONE!!

    38. Cassi says – reply to this

      38

The only way Sarah Brightman is coming back is if ALW writes a hag into this one.

    40. Tori says – reply to this

      40

Ugh. I absolutely LOVE Phantom, but the book Phantom of Manhattan was terrible, and if he bases a musical off it, that will be terrible as well.
Fuck. He should do something based of Susan Kay's Phantom, though it would be extremely difficult. That would be the best thing EVER

    41. CA OBorkson says – reply to this

      41

I would only watch it if Sarah returned. She is the backbone of ALW Phantom!!

    42. sil says – reply to this

      42

That is one of the most unnecessary things ever. Phantom's great and all, but why waste talent like Weber's on an unneeded sequel for people who suddenly became obsessed with the original AFTER the sucky movie came out?
And Emmy Rossum? She was a nice Christine in the movie, but her voice wouldn't work well on stage. Then again, anything's better than the obnoxious squeaking sounds that come from Sarah Brightman's mouth.

    43. Tweety says – reply to this

      43

Phantom is not meant to have a sequel. Are you kidding me? Poor Mr. Webber must be really hard up for cash. Must be all the alimony payments to his numerous ex-wives.

    44. Michael K says – reply to this

      44

I guess no one has any good new ideas anymore. I ask you, is nothing sacred? Do we really need to drag everything out with prequels and sequels?

      48

Understandable he's cashing in on the only success he's had in the last two decades, but come on. Phantom was wondful, it was a complete masterpiece with a heartbreaking ending that was just perfect, and how he has completely and totally sold out for a sequel (which I've read) that reads like a cheap supermarket paperback romance. I've lost a lot of respect.

    49. aaaaaaaaaaaaa says – reply to this

Mr.Webber best not mess with a classic! Just because he remade the play and did the movie doesn't give him the right. P.S. Just in case his big old head doesn't listen to reason, at least have the good sense to cast Gerard Butler. Yummy, Yummy Screw, Screw!!

    52. ryguy says – reply to this

      52

Well…if you paid attention Perez, you'd know that the score is done, the lyrics are being written and it's scheduled for a 2009 debut. this has been talked about for a few months now. It IS based off the book Phantom in Manhattan and will probably suck.

During last falls XFactor in England,It was reported the Webber was
offering the major role to Rhydian Roberts.I believe that is why Simon Cowell

summer-fall.If so, I will fly across this continent to see the show!!!!!!Hope its true.

      66

      There is a novel… by a well-known author… called The Phantom in New York…

And I think what's most important here is that this is the first project on which Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice will be collaborating since "Evita".

I don't now how far Webber can go now that he can afford to pay off every multiple plagiarism suit. (My favorite — the two at a time from the Rodgers & Hammerstein Musical Trust and Puccini's publisher Ricordi for "Memories".)

There are plenty of stories about his paying off the Prokofiev estate for the theme from Phantom.

All of that's interesting — but here is what matters.

MANY happy birthdays to you, Senor Perez — many, many happy days — and dogs — and crushes — and loves to you.

You're one of the true creative AND business successes — a real independent!!!! Yay for you!!!

OH MY GOD!!!! YESSSSSSSS! This is the BEST news. Please bring back Gerard Butler and the original main players!!! This is awesome. I am SO excited!! PLEASE don't dork out on the script. I mean do make a shit sequal just to make money that wasn't really thought thoroughly out. Take your time to make this rock and be worth it. Alot of people make sequals that suck just so they can draw people in with the promise of something as great as the first only to be dissapointed with the acting/script/story quality. THIS I will go to theater to see instead of waiting for it to come on video like most movies. MAKE IT ROCK ANDREW!!

      thanks for the "news"

it's been well-know for almost a year that the sequel is being worked on, and it'll definitely be (at least in part) inspired by the Webber-commissioned novel "Phantom in Manhattan" from when he first considered a sequel…

Leave to Webber to twist the story into something shitty… It all started in 1910 (the ORIGINAL publication date for LEROUX'S NOVEL) the only decent adaptation was the 1925 Silent movie, not the musical… and that fucking movie which ruined it. Hell, they couldnt even get the dates right! 1871? PARIS WAS UNDER SIEGE BY THE PRUSSIANS AND THE OPERA HOUSE WAS INAUGURATED IN JAN 1875!!

Perez, he mentioned this last April. It's all over the British News. It's based on the Phantom of Manhattan by Frederick Forsyth. And Rhydian Roberts (X Factor) is being signed on for Phantom and Katherine Jenkins as Christine. Maybe. It's still in talks. But you're really slow this time.

My opinion: God no, the first one was legendary, why ruin the storyline with a new story, especially one as crappy as Forsyth's
