Man jailed for microwaving baby
A jury in Texas has sentenced a man to 25 years in prison for severely burning his two-month-old daughter in a microwave oven last year.
The jury rejected Joshua Mauldin's defence that he was insane when he placed his daughter Ana in the oven.
Prosecutors said Mauldin had a history of violence, lying about being mentally ill and was angry about his marriage.
Ana, now aged one, suffered second and third-degree burns to her face and left side and required two skin grafts.
Part of her left ear had to be amputated.
Her foster mother, Heather Croxton, told the court of the painful daily treatments Ana has had to undergo since being left in the microwave for up to 20 seconds.
"There is no excuse for your actions and I hate that one day you will be set free and allowed to move on with your life while Ana continues to pay for your actions," she said.
Mauldin's lawyer, Sam Cammack, said his client would not get the treatment he needs for mental illness in prison.

oh how i adore the narrow minds of perfect people! sounds like everyone's just itching for a good witch burning, some tar&feathering perhaps? people with mental illness live amongst us. *gasp* they're family, friends, lovers…some people can be ok with a little prozac, and some people struggle with greater burdens. i don't know if this guy was truly ill when he did this. but if he was, punishment won't prevent another tragedy. just like virginia tech, columbine, oklahoma city…people need to get off their asses, and if someone seems a little off, offer some help! (and maybe if we had national health care, there'd be a few psych wards in TX)
I work with abused children and I'm still amazed at what people have done to children. It's horrible that this man will not receive treatment…giving these people a "time out" in prison won't solve the problem!!!

saw this posting and thought i would comment since i live where this happened and work at the hotel where this happened. once again galveston jury didn't do right by a victim, only 25 years, with possible parole around 2019 for this crime was just to unbelievable, Mauldin should have gotten life without parole!

I have one bit of happy news to add. This beautiful baby girl is now my second cousin. Heather being my first. She is an amazing mom and has always wanted a girl. They are still fighting for the full rights, so send them the best. I have seen a lovely family pic and Ana is smiling so amazingly. You cannot imagine how anyone could do that to a baby. With Texas justice you think we would have done better by her. Hopeully prison justice will take care of that for us….
