Showing Their Age, Sucking Hardcore

Filed under: Music Minute > Old People

duranduran.jpg

80's pop sensations Duran Duran kicked off their world tour in odd fashion on Wednesday.

"Duran Duran, fucking up in style," exclaimed lead singer Simon Le Bon to the concertgoers at their first show, in Auckland, New Zealand.

And boy was the statement right on the mark!

Le Bon forgot the lyrics to their smash hit Hungry Like a Wolf and bassist John Taylor stormed off the stage at one point. Taylor abandoned his instrument apparently in reaction to a segment in which the group's members donned matching satin suits and headsets to play a medley on keyboards and an electric drum set.

"I could not dance to that. These people came here to dance," Taylor said, after he returned to the stage.

What a hot mess! Love it!

They begin a North American tour in Vancouver, Canada, on April 29th.

Hope they give us some crazy on this side of the world!

Oh no! I love them and they were great when they all reunited 3 years ago. F**k, better not suck when I see them in May 'cuz I paid me some good money to see them.

I am so Bummed to hear that they sucked. I was a huge, huge fan of Duran Duran back in the day. The teenage girl in me still loves them and she wishes them a strong comeback in another performance. Rock on GUYS!!

  22. #22 - Raquel says – reply to this

I also saw them on Broadway and they were amazing! The set JT walked offstage was their "Electroset" where they all are dressed the same and stand in front of drum machines and keyboards. It's way cool! Check 'em out before you knock 'em…they've had a lot of hits!

  23. #23 - iknowsimon says – reply to this

I have hung withsimon a couple times and have to say he is witty smart talented and damn hot….id put dd against any band today and they'd be on top

  24. #24 - alichat says – reply to this

It would be helpful to speak to someone who was actually at the concert instead of quoting from a UK Reuters article where the writer was not at the show. Simon did mess up the lyrics (everyone has a bad day people)….but John did not storm off the stage. He stepped off to the side to speak to the sound guy and his guitar tech. Also, he didn't abandon his instrument in some protest. They are doing an electro set which is an homage to Kraftwerk, where all are on electronic set-ups. The dance comment was said in a joking manner and not in anger. Again….ask someone who was there.

  25. #25 - AWESOME NIGHT!!! says – reply to this

NOOOOO!!!!!!!! I was there dancing my arse off in the 2nd row and it wasn't like that at all!!!
JT did leave the stage when the music stopped, but he didn't STORM off, I thought he was just going to give the sound guy a slap…the band was pretty jovial and making jokes, and the crowd was cheering until the music started again. Yes, a few words got missed, but the crowd couldn't have cared less. It's only snarky journalists that need a good story the next day that make it sound like it was something it wasn't. It was an amazing night, it certainly made one of my lifelong dreams come true and I'd see them again in a heartbeat.

  26. #26 - AntDec says – reply to this

I have always wanted to see DD in concert, but I really didnt like the last album. Part of me wants to get tickets but the other half is thinking no.
If it were back in the 80's or 90's hell yea I would so be there!

  27. #27 - rkonana says – reply to this

Duran duran KICK A**, they are still the best, have been and will always be the best!!!!!!!!

  28. #28 - Scooby Snacks says – reply to this

    From the DD forum board:

According to several fans who were there, this is not how it went down. This article stems from UK Reuters and is now, unfortunately, being quoted all over the place (fantastic for tix sales). It wouldn't be the first time the press blew something out of the proportion in order to get a story - and some just love to do it to this band.

To quote a post from another board:

I was there, second row and this is rubbish!

John walked to the sound guy at side stage, didn't storm off and his dancing bit was a joke
I saw no 'rift' occurring and certainly not after the show amongst the band

I'm not surprised. I saw them in 95 and Simon was so fucked up he couldn't remember the words to Rio.

I still think John Taylor is hot, though. I don't give a shit how old he is.

  38. #38 - their mortgage pmts are due says – reply to this

OK, so I was in love with this band during highschool, but now I think the DD boys are grasping… it's so sad. They look bloated, angry, and I'm betting this is all about, "Let's see how many people will buy tickets so we can pay our bills." :(

  39. #39 - technokid says – reply to this

I've been to a couple of their concerts and they are amazing live. As with any band there are good and bad nights but it doesn't make them has beens.

I'm 17 years old and I think they are one of the best bands out there. Not to mention when I met them they were sweethearts.

I still love Duran Duran and I am hoping to go to another concert really soon.

  40. #40 - ~Christine~ says – reply to this

I am seeing them in Seattle on April 30th - totally excited - saw them last time they were in town - Great Show!! -

  41. #41 - ck says – reply to this

It's got nowt to do with age. Le Bon's been forgetting lyrics to their biggest hits for the band's entire career. Watch the video for "Hungry Like the Wolf" - He doesn't even hit the mark there!

That said, Duran Duran are still brilliant and are far more worthy of acclaim than some of the old trolls Perez continually hypes on here.

  42. #42 - SIGMUND says – reply to this

DON'T BUST TIL YOU TRY THEM….. I have never miss a tour and they are always at the top of their game!

  43. #43 - hoooocccckkkkkeeeeeeyyyyyy says – reply to this

UMMMM, Laury they have sold over 85 million records, don't think they are hard up for cash, but honestly as a DD fan for 27 years, I have seen several live shows and they were never fantastic live, they are about an image and a presence. Fashionable, handsome men. I truly believe Nick is the most talented musically, it's why they relied so heavily on synthesizers….Still, they have made some great songs, most of them being the ones you DON"T hear on radio or that they play live, some obscure, really great synth tunes…

  44. #44 - carrie says – reply to this

isn't that just about exactly how The Police tour began and look at how easily they turned it around and how much money they made. the boys will make it work

  45. #45 - chickie says – reply to this

Oh arent the little D's cute?? Reminds me of the old Laverne and Shirley show….awwwww, they're adorable…okay, not really but what else can I say about two very grown men with matching letters on their clothes?

  46. #46 - Michael says – reply to this

I have seen them several times and they are perfectionists, they always have given a great show. Mr. Hilton, have you ever had an off day, because some of those outfits you choose would lead me to say you've had more than one my dear. Once you get your large, yet flat, backside on a stage and do it perfectly for 25 years, then come back and talk your filth. And just so you know, I am willing for you to put my email address out there because I know that's how you deal with those critical of you.

  47. #47 - DURAN DURAN ROCKED NZ!! says – reply to this

DON'T BELIEVE THE LIES!!! I don't know why it's being made out it was a shit night, IT WAS FANTASTIC! I was right up the front and saw it all - there was no storming off, there was no band rift or arguing…everyone was happy and dancing and screaming and having the time of their lives…me included!
Sexy Simon sang his heart out, ok, so he got slightly confused and missed a few words, who cares?? Nobody that that I've spoken to WHO WAS ACTUALLY THERE did. They sounded great, and they looked great! AGAIN - DON'T BELIEVE THE LIES!!!

  48. #48 - bebe says – reply to this

    DIE DIE DIE, PEREZ!!!!!!!!!!

I'm surprised to hear this about Duran squared. They did a mini concert (about 10-12 songs) for a local radio station in Chicago during the holidays and did a great job. There was no mistakes, it sounded pretty tight. But, they didnt DO Hungry Like a Wolf…their only "mistake"!

  52. #52 - DALE says – reply to this

Re: josie – It makes sense because in interviews they would always talk about how big a influence roxy music had on them (no duh) from their synth sound to their sound roxy music influenced a lot of acts at that period, gary numan, kiss, david bowie and even john lennon, also as musicians they pale in comparison ferry, mackay, eno, thompson, manzanera were all superior musicians.

  53. #53 - Simon'sGal says – reply to this

I don't give a shit if Simon forgot his NAME. I'd fuck him ’til the white meat showed.
DD are and always will be AWESOME. A "poor man's roxy music"? I think not. Roxy only wished they had the commercial success/fan base DD had and still has. Keep rocking it out my English heartthrobs!

  54. #54 - Kate says – reply to this

Re: DALE – You are an idiot. I am a big fan of Roxy Music but they wish they had 1/10th of the success that Duran Duran has had. Ive seen DD twice and they kicked ass both times. I'm seeing them again in May and I can't wait. Saw Roxy Music in the 80s and as much as I loved their music, they put on a BORING show. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I guarantee you there's nothing boring about DD.

I saw the show in Auckland. The review was correct with the above comments, but don't let it put you off going. The rest of the show kicked ass and if you'd bothered to put the whole review in you would have seen something along the lines of 'by the end of the show all was forgiven'. The crowd went nuts for them. They played loads of classics and they played them well. They also did a rocking cover of White Lines by Grandmaster Flash. Pure Gold!

I love Duran Duran and I'm going to see them in May also. I hope they work out their technical problems before then.
Their new album Red Carpet Massacre isn't that great though. They need Andy Taylor back in the band ASAP.

  61. #61 - JohnnyDo says – reply to this

Is that Mark Mcgrath on the left? If not, that is what he has to look forward to in like 3 years.

  62. #62 - Julie says – reply to this

Perez are you nuts?? Talking trash about Duran Duran?? Simon is so hot I CAN'T stand it. Plus the band is still creating great music…listened to their 25-year repertoire lately? Live performances are fabulous. Still relevant. Sucking hardcore? Please. Now go write some more garbage about Amy Winehouse or some other waste of recording studio space.

  63. #63 - Elayne says – reply to this

Well I was there at the concert and it was great, waited 25 years to see them. As for hungry like the wolf I think Simon might have been having problems with the mike as he changed it shortly after, if he forgot words it was like a half a line of the first verse of the second chorus could tell as he wasn't facing the front of the stage at that moment.

John didn't storm off, the guys on the right hand side of the stage ( not the band, the technical guys) didn't get the timing right on all she wants and he went over to them to sort it out as he wanted people dancing. There were some technical problems (3 in total) with guys on the right hand side of the stage which Duran Duran were pissed off about but they were really professional about it, the audience having a great time was really important to them. I lost count of songs about 23 to 25. 6 off Red Carpet Masscre, 3 off Duran Duran, 4 from Rio including my favourite the Chauffuer, 2 from Seven and the Ragged Tiger plus heap more. The old ones were the most popular but I think that is because Red Carpet Massacre is not so well known in NZ, it is one of my favourites since Notorius.

Anyway they were great, and sometines things are beyond your control like the technical hiccups but things were sorted very quickly within 30 seconds to a minute was the longest one. It was obvious the group were pissed off about them, they wanted the concert to be perfect and to give a great time to everyone.

For the record, if it wasn't for Duran Duran MTV would not have been as popular as it was back then. Because of Duran's videos people started watching MTV and other groups started producing music video. They have contributed a lot during the 80's era. Shit, most of the artist now does not have the charisma and has no eclectic taste to their music. The only thing I did not like, they freaking signed up with Timbaland and Justin Timberlake for their new album….

He's quirky like that, and I am sorry, but if I had a song catalog that large I sure as hell would have a hard time remembering them all. Cut the guy a break….and John Taylor is on of the nicest and most genuine people you will ever meet. I find it very hard to beleive that he "stormed off the stage".

Near the end of the NZ show, John Taylor made sure a little kid in the front row got his pick…sweetheart…

He always forgets the words to the songs…..i dont understand why this is suddenly big news. Thats one of the best things about them…..thats why i spend my hard earned money on going to their shows and drooling all over myself.
