Things Are Slowly A Changin'

Last week it was announced that Raul Castro's government will allow Cubans to own cell phones.

Now, reports claim that early Monday the younger Castro quietly lifted the controversial ban keeping Cubans from staying at tourist hotels and renting cars.

Granma, the Communist Party daily newspaper, made no mention of the change on its website early Monday, but several hotel and rental-car employees said they were informed of the move late Sunday.

A hotel worker , who declined to give his name out of fear, welcomed the change. "Cubans should have the same rights as everyone else," he said.

Amen!

While these small changes have happened, they are still not a free market, free economy country. Until that happens, they'll continue to allow the government dictate to them how much they eat, what they wear, where or if they work, etc. The people are still not in control, it's still the government. THIS is what happens when you let the left take control of the government…it's not the conservatives that hijack the people & the government, it's the LEFT. They want to think for us, dictate to us how we live, how much we spend, where we spend, etc. WE can't allow THIS to happen to the U.S.

Viva La Revolution my grandfather was Castro’s head baker before he came to this country. He would have to stand next to him with his guards and taste the food first to make sure he wasn't poising him. Why would you want to lead a country like that wondering if your next bite is your last? There have been many leaders that have done great thing for their countries and were rewarded with respect and power. Power does not have to come from demeaning a nation into ruins take a lesson America.

I know this isn't really the forum to start a political discussion, but this is far too reminiscent of the way "rights" were returned to the privileged classes in China and the USSR before it broke up.

Politics and International relations ARE interesting, but you can't just pick news from here and there because then the feed will be extremely biased you aren't educated in the area anyway. I understand this is just copying a piece of news from another source, but my point stands. For: human rights are being broken all around the world, all the time, in America as well, but yet you choose to report only on Cuba. That is annoying, knowing the ridicculous history between you "guys". I understand most readers here aren't IR majors either but it's no excuse to feed their ignorant world views.

Canadians who are basically handing an oppressive dictatorship their cash as none of that goes back to helping this very poor nation get with the times (i.e modern standards of medical care, supplies, surgical techniques, electonics, media and access to a variety of ideas).

      42

YES!! Let's see what happens next though, I don't trust Raul!

    43. cubita says – reply to this

      43

      Part I
This might seem like a small step, but it is one small thing that will give dignity to Cubans. My mother-in-law is an engineer in Havana and had to fly to one of the resort hotels in the keys (Cayo Coco) to oversee some renovations, and they made her fly out the same day because she wasn't allowed to stay at the hotel as a guest! And then she flew back the next day to continue her work. Crap like this happens in Cuba everyday. I am Canadian, so my husband who is Cuban was allowed to stay at a hotel for our honeymoon only after showing our marriage license, but his family was not allowed to come to our room, couldn't even step foot in the elevator! So I feel like in addition to making prostitution easier, more importantly it will provide Cubans with some small allowance that any person deserves.

    44. cubita says – reply to this

      44

      Part II
Now I just wish my husband, who cannot return to Cuba because he is a medical doctor who deserted, will be allowed to enter Cuba again someday and we can take his mom to a hotel for a family vacation like the rest of us do. The other news about allowing cell phone use to all Cubans also seems a little lame in comparison to freedom, but manyyyyyyyy Cubans cannot get phone lines in their homes. Can you imagine trying to see if your relatives are ok after a hurricane, or some other tragic event and they have no phone? The phones might be costly relatively speaking, but the black market functions incredibly well in Cuba and people can find money for these essentials. I hope legalizing home internet access is next!

      Good luck Cuba!

except that cubans are still totally fucked. according to MSNBC they will be charged in convertible pesos worth 24 the currency they earn…which is about $20/mo. just because they aren't restricted from buying a cell, dvd player, or microwave doesn't mean they CAN. they are still completely oppressed.

    47. Go Raul says – reply to this

      47

Having cell phones is no small thing! Renting cars, either. Those are two important tools for building a business. Sadly, since they've kept legal businesses artificially small with restrictions on hiring employees etc, illegal business owner will be the first with cash to invest in rental cars, cell phones, whatever else he frees up. Well, and folks with rich relatives in Miami. Hey Perez, shouldn't you be investing in the first Cuban celebrity gossip empire? Pay for a bunch of Cuban paps to have cell phone cameras!
      .
Still, though….it's more than I'd hoped for from li'l Raul. Do you think they tell Fidel what's going on? Or just keep him doped up, watching himself give speeches on TV all day?

I guess Fidel Castro is just like one big Corporate Conglomerate. Lets call it the Fidel Castro Corporation. Is this why Cuba wants to maintain its independence even if the Communist government was overthrown? So some other dictator disguised as a participant in democracy can become a giant corporate conglomerate. The Cubans at this point have too much corruption and black market connections for it to be left in their own hands. I like the Colony of the United States of America. Saddam Hussein (he got his chemical/biological weapons from you to kill his own people in the 1980's btw), the Shah of Iran, Pinochet of Chile, Batista of Cuba, the Saudi/Egyptian, regimes, Mobutu of Zaire, numerous latin American dictatorships (Argentina, El Salvador, Venezuela, Brazil, Paraguay). Not to mention sponsoring various coup d'état, assassinations, the selling of arms to dictators and invading a country for oil…I mean for WMD.
Maybe you they don't show you this on the propoganda channels like Fox or CNN?
And I don't support my country doing business with Cuba either. But at least when we drop money there we know that it goes towards to a country that provides better medical care/education than a certain country to the north. How many Americans have free and efficient health and universities?

Armed SA and SS thugs barged into local government offices using the state of emergency decree as a pretext to throw out legitimate office holders and replace them with Nazi Reich commissioners.

Re: Cuban Bitch – it is insignificant. the cuban community in miami is largely a disgrace due to the complete and total lack of any work ethic or pride there. they cant even pick up their used taco wrappers.

Tiny bit positive, allowing cell phones and stays in luxury accomodations, both things 99% of Cubans cannot hope to afford. I guess it's akin to my being allowed to own a waterfront home in Malibu…although I could have cnstructed my life differently and actually have achieved that. Not so for residents of Cuba. The construction of their lives is handled for them. Lovely people, lovely country. Freedom should sing there, as soon as possible. Viva la Cuba Libre! (pardon my spelling por favor)

      RE: (#42)
"Lets count the number of canadians that write in about how much they love cuba because there are not any Americans there. Canadians who are basically handing an oppressive dictatorship their cash as none of that goes back to helping this very poor nation get with the times (i.e modern standards of medical care, supplies, surgical techniques, electonics, media and access to a variety of ideas)."
I am not a 'hater,' as you go on to eloquently say, and I will not presume to correct all of the incorrect grammar and syntax in your post, but do read up on our medical system, our education system (apparently superior to wherever you may have gone to skool)- our Prime Minister can spell potato, by the way. You simply look a fool when you spout rthetoric without facts, and when your argument flies in the face of all that is terribly, terribly wrong in your country.

part 2 I was born in the USA, am a dual citizen, and can't wait to vote in the next election. Let's try to iron out a medical plan accesible to all, an education sytem that is not in complete downward spiral, a war on drugs and crime that makes some sense, a plan to begin to correct the rampant racism and anti-immigration bent currently being espoused…so much to do, so little time. Please, for the love of God, think before you post idiocy.
Thank you, though, for the incredible troops and the undeniable contribution to the safety and freedom of all North Americans afforded by their sacrifices-both Americans and Canadians.
Peace. From a ciizen of 'a very poor nation with access to media and a variety of ideas (don't even get me started on how little most Americans even KNOW about Canada!).

Re: GOOD FOR CUBA – I agree with your comment "Good for Cuba" Let's keep those ignorant Americans away, they are not wanted anywhere. They do not know any better. That's why they elected a Bush as their president. The bible and religion is more important to Amercans than the economy, jobs, education, science, etc. That would have never happened in Europe. Americans has a long way to go to get educated. They spend too much time watching Fox News and scary Hollywood movies.

Re: guilty pleasures – [re=1845670] I agree with you "Guilty Pleaures" Americans do not know anything about Canada or the rest of the world. For many years they have been told at school and at home that this is the most powerful country in the world, that they are better than the rest of the world even though they do not have access to a decent education, security at home or at school, decent jobs, free medical care, or the basic human needs. But like Fidel Castro once said the Empire is crumbling, and I think he was right. Just look at how messed up this country is and yet American have no power to change it or make it better.

To #5, and any of you so called patriots, and fake anti communist swine.
The American government and your corporate elite, are currently and very vigorously sucking a big dick. And thrust fully awaiting the cum, to splash down the backs of their capitalistic rusty throats. China is that big dick. China, yes China the biggest communist country in the world. But this doesn’t stop your precious, stupid, little small minded, incompetent American government from wanting to go to bed with the Chinese, every little horny chance that it gets. My suggestion to you and your unfortunate types, is to take a brake from these gossip blogs, and find out what is really going on with your own American government. And just maybe you can rise up, just a little bit from the subhuman state, that you all are currently in. E.
