In Bad Company

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayPolitikBarack ObamaLGBT

He continues to disappoint us!

Just when you thought reports of Barack Obama and his controversial minister Rev. Jeremiah Wright were over, a new individual appears.

Now news of Obama's relationship with homophobe Rev. James T. Meeks has been revealed, and it's very upsetting.

Rev. Meeks is an Illinois state senator and serves as the pastor of the 22,000 member Salem Baptist Church in Chicago, where Obama frequently campaigned back in 2003 when running for Senate.

Rev. Meeks has been described as someone in which Obama seeks spiritual counsel from, according to an article printer in the Chicago Sun Times. He will even serve as an Obama delegate at the 2008 Democratic convention in Denver.

Rev. Meeks has served on Obama’s exploratory committee for the presidency and was even listed on Obama's campaign website as one his ‘influential black supporters’. The Chicago Sun Times also reported that both Rev. Meeks and Obama share a history of receiving substantial campaign contributions from the indicted real estate "criminal" Tony Rezko.

Aside from numerous other reports linking the two together, the real issue is the character of Rev. Meeks, who is known for his racially charged remarks and homophobic ways.

In a 2006 sermon, Rev. Meeks stated, "We don't have slave masters. We got mayors. But they still the same white people who are presiding over systems where black people are not able, or to be educated. You got some preachers that are house niggers. You got some elected officials that are house niggers. And rather than them trying to break this up, they gonna fight you to protect this white man." He later defended that sermon during an interview with a Chicago CBS 2 reporter.

Not to mention Rev. Meeks homophobic ways are well noted. A 2007 newsletter from the Southern Poverty Law Center named Rev. Meeks one of the "10 leading black religious voices in the anti-gay movement."

The newsletter cites him as a key member of Chicago's ‘Gatekeepers’ network (an interracial group of evangelical ministers who strive to erase the division between church and state) and “a stalwart anti-gay activist… [who]… has used his House of Hope mega-church to launch petition drives for the Illinois Family Institute (IFI), a major state-level ‘family values’ pressure group that lauded him last year for leading African Americans in ‘clearly understanding the threat of gay marriage.'”

You can tell a lot about a person by the company they keep!

Sad. Sad. Sad.

Ugh. You are an idiot Perez. When are you going to realize that a man…a politician who is trying to bring every part of America together needs to establish relationships with different minded people. This man's ideals and philosophies ARE NOT THE SAME as Barack Obama's. You need to figure out how America and people in America work if you are going to continue to try and comment on real issues instead of just gossip. Spreading gossip about the potential next president of the United States is not helping bring the country together but only continuing to tear us apart. I wish to god you would actually read the comments people leave on your posts so that you could actually consider a way of thinking outside your sheltered view. Maybe then you could learn to be more open minded and realize the way politicians need to play both sides for the good of the country.
I personally wouldn't mind if Obama was "keeping company" with Tony Soprano so long as he was doing it to accomplish something good for the nation and the rest of the people of the world. Obama has spelled out HIS beliefs and history in two books and on his website. Try posting about the man and not the circles he moves in to accomplish his goals.

This Hussein Obama is a scary man. His wife is scary. The company they keep and embrace is scary. I remember Castro coming to the United States shortly after taking over Cuba and answering the question of an American reporter if he was a communist and Castro denying, denying, denying…and guess what. And that is what Obama reminds me of. I believe we would be IN SUCH TROUBLE if we let this man in, if he charms us to let him in. These Obamas and their friends are angry, angry people who don't like America. Not to mention that his wife dresses like she picks her things from the blue light table at K-Mart. We CAN'T have this.

And Hillary is married to the man who signed into law the "Defense of Marriage ACT" AND the "Dont Ask Dont Tell Policy.

Give it a rest Perez.. We're on the same fucking team here. Hillary has no chance of winning and this does us no good.

Do you really want McCain elected? Keep it up.

That is so true - and Obama based on all his associations shows very horrific judgment. Thank you for posting this for Hillary! thanks for all your support!

This is Perez's site and all and by no means an unbiased pargaon of journalistic integrity but he should really just stick to the celeb stuff. 1 sided views or unfair commentary on a celebrity are funny, 1 sided views and unfair commentary on a politician that most of his fanbase likes during a time of unprecedented voter involvement is just bad business. Hillary Clinton is pandering to the ignorant vote far more than Obama, you don't see her going on and on about gay rights while she's talking to blue collar mine workers … that's not to demean her attitude towards gays, because she's not anti gay, but to mention this when Obama has attended a pro gay event the night before just show's how slanted Perez is

  8. L says – reply to this

I'm glad this has come to surface. I would never vote for a person who surrounds himself with such angry, hateful people.

  9. Bateman says – reply to this

PUH-leeeeeeeze don't scrutinize Obama and his past!
It shatters the illusion that he is our savior
We'd rather keep on believing he stands for ideals and unity
Showing facts and relationships that contradict that is wrong!!!
So what if can't live up to the hype his supporters tout.

  10. Nobama says – reply to this

Re: betty – An aquaintance wouldn't matter, however, these people were much more then just aquaitances. These were his pastors, spiritual advisors and political advisors. Your friends and bedfellows can describe without words who you are, just by association. It should matter.

Just because my grandpa is a homophobe does that make me one? i see their council and they have been very influential in my life…OH NO - i'm NOT electable anymore! Stop the politics perez…you don't know what the f you are talking about! stop spreading this bs!

    Who is Barack Obama?

Barack Hussein Obama will NOT recite the Pledge of Allegiance nor will he show any reverence for our flag. While others place their hands over their hearts, Obama turns his back to the flag and slouches. Do you want someone like this as your PRESIDENT?

ALSO, keep in mind that when he was sworn into office he DID NOT use the Holy Bible, but instead the Koran.
Let us all remain alert concerning Obama's expected presidential candidacy.

  13. Lisa - an Obama Supporter says – reply to this

If anyone thinks that things will be back to the old days when Bill Clinton was in office if Hillary is elected, they've got another thing coming. Given the past 8 years' antics by the Shrub, whomever is in office will have a hell of a time. This whole "guilt by association" thing Perez has going on is ridiculous.

I don't care for Billary and I am an Obama supporter but I also believe that ANY kind of negative attention placed on Billary or Obama is fuel for McCain's fire. Wise up! Don't help them. We all have skeletons, know people for whom might make us look bad, and would we want to be labeled just by the company we may have kept? I think not. I'm sure if we dug deep enough, we could find much to accuse Billary. Without digging, we have the whole "misspeak" thing about ducking gunfire recently that is an embarrassment for Billary as much as for those off in this stupid war.

Obama is the best choice. McCain's for continued war, so same shit different president. Billary voted for the war, wants to get us out now, and has consistently either misspoken or gotten her panties in a twist over irrelevant points that she has committed, so pot meet kettle.

Whatever happened to not guilty by association?? I love u Perez, I swear I do but all this Obama bashing really needs to stop. Do you want McCain to win? You can also tell a lot about a person upon their past actions.

    Take Hillary, for example.

She voted for the war in Iraq. Barack didn't.

Hillary allows lobbyists to sway her, constantly giving up what she believes in for cash.

Barack Obama is not his pastor. He has addressed the complaints on his pastor in a way that spoke to most Americans like adults who are capable of forming their own opinions.
You however, seem hell bent on treating this like your average Lindsay Lohan story. Your biased and mostly bullshit smear campaign is damaging to the democratic party. You, Perez, are helping John Mccain win.

  22. Bateman says – reply to this

Re: Lisa - an Obama Supporter – Remember, these people are running for President of the United States. Who they are associated with does matter, your friends say alot about you without words, it is called association. And it should matter. And I think this campaign needs to get ugly, voters need to know about all of them, good and bad.The Clintons have been in the spotlight for years, hard to hide really anything. Obama on the other hand, well he already is getting a bad reputation, his judgement is lacking at best. On Iraq War, well maybe he didn't want to rage war against his Muslim brothers or he can't make the big decisions. Judgement my ass. I'd rather have McCain win then Obama, and I'm a democrat. The war will still be happening when the next person takes the White House, so what will Obama do?? Immediate withdrawl, bowing down to the Muslims and terrorist and sitting down and having some dinner. Remember he spent 5 years during the 'tender years' of his life in a Muslim school in Indonesia, so he DOES have Muslim roots. His judgement in picking religions and churches are very poor, and Iraq.. was no judgement.

No one asks the white candidates to condemn and reject every follower that the (liberal) public disagrees with. You were all laughs when Ann Coulter "endorsed" Hillary. For a gay man with a significant following, you certainly align yourself with some less than politically correct celebrities. A man's company may be indicative of his character, but it is certainly not the entire story. It is hypocritical for you, someone so immersed in disgusting celebrity rituals, to judge a candidate so wholelistically based on one relationship with one human being whose views you do not agree with. It is additionally hypocritical for you to constantly encourage young people to go and vote - "you don't care who for" - and then to trash talk the other nominees, when you evidently (after this sony BMG scandal) know how influential of a podium you hold. I agree that you are entitled to free speech; I just wish that you would truly embrace your influence and understand your audience better.

Re: suki7 – If you had done any research you would know that Obama is not "snubbing" Florida and Michigan-The Democratic party made a decision that primaries were not to be held before a specific date…states that chose not to abide by this rule had to face the consequences- Florida and Michigan knew the consequences when they chose to schedule their primaries…so as much as I would like their votes to count ,they were the dumb asses that let it happen - so too bad for Florida and Michigan-just like a naughty child, hopefully they have learned their lesson.

Such BULLSHIT and hypocrisy by Perez…he's friends with Paris Hilton who was recorded on video making racial slurs…..what a shame…you keep company with a racist and are hypocrite….

  35. Shannon says – reply to this

Perez, Perez, Perez you just don't understand the Black community….there is a lot of homophobia and yes people (especially older people) are still stung by racism and Jim Crow but taking this preacher's albeit racist words out of context and saying that they in anyway reflect Obama is certainly not true. Ties to churches (sadly) run deeper than just the preacher who isn't always the key part of the church so much as the hundreds of other positions who make it up…I understand how this seems threatening to a white person/gay person but you really have to understand the workings of this very complicated Black Church system.

I believe Obama doesn't agree with these things just as I don't agree with 1/2 of the things my own very controversial pastor says.

  36. Ron says – reply to this

You will find this type of sermen preached in almost every single black church on any street corner. These are the same preachers and churches Bill and Hill attend when they have campaigned all their lives all over the country. It's a shame but it's the truth.

Just because someone is your mentor and is anti-gay DOES NOT IN ANY way mean that you are anti-gay.
i am very very disappointed in this post and think you should think twice before posting something like this.
Hillary Clinton talks about all of her experience and there are videos out there clearly showing she lied about one of her trips. Doesnt that disappoint you? How and why would you want someone who has lied about experience just so she can try and win the democratic nomination. Barack supports gays and thats that truth. its no one else's business who his mentor is. Listen to his speeches and stop with the negative posts about Obama. Just because Hillary is in the shitter doesnt mean you can trash Barack,

  40. ... says – reply to this

Obama is not a racist! These accusations are unfounded and just negative! Stop with the bad press! Just because someone is your Pastor does NOT mean that you agree with him. Think about Obama's education, background, and overall campaign…his being a racist, homopobe doesn't add up!

  41. jenathan says – reply to this

This is pointless information. Obama has never denied that this man is linked to him. On the contrary. He said he has been close to him for many years…He baptised Obama's kids!!! What is the point of this negative shit. Meeks is not running for president, Obama is! I know am friends with so many people with whom I disagree with politically and at times ethically. That doesn't mean I have to sever our relationship. We agree to disagree.
I disagree with so much that Meeks says, but I don;t see him as an extension of Obama. So stupid!! I guess if you can't find real dirt on someone, you start grasping at straws.

  42. Clinton didn't pay health insurance bills says – reply to this

Among the debts reported this month by Hillary Rodham Clinton’s struggling presidential campaign, the $292,000 in unpaid health insurance premiums for her campaign staff stands out.

Clinton, who is being pressured to end her campaign against Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination, has made her plan for universal health care a centerpiece of her agenda.

That's hillary health care for you.

I know I do- relatives, friends, etc. Just because he is in Obama's life, does not mean that Obama agrees with the racist, homophobic rantings. That is why Obama is running for president, not some radical like Meeks.

"You can tell a lot about people by the company they keep."

You need to watch what you say, because if that is what you believe, Perez, then you need to do some more investigation into Hillary, because some of her "friends" are scary…. And I just don't say that for dramatic effect…I'll name one name you should look into - Mark Penn - her campaign's senior advisor - he's a slimeball - his firm defends Blackwater, the security firm with all the problems in Iraq. Do some research on him…and then decide if you believe that people should be held responsible for the actions of their friends…because he really is slimy.

Oh yeah…when was the last time Hillary openly talked about gays and lesbians in an open forum? I have yet to hear it - yet I've seen Obama do it on TV a number of times and in person in an open forum just the other day! Hillary only talks about gays and lesbians in any great detail when she is in front of a gay-friendly audience….enough said.

Through all of her years in Washington, Clinton has been an active participant in conservative Bible study and prayer circles that are part of a secretive Capitol Hill group known as the Fellowship. Her collaborations with right-wingers such as Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) and former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) grow in part from that connection. "A lot of evangelicals would see that as just cynical exploitation," says the Reverend Rob Schenck, a former leader of the militant anti-abortion group Operation Rescue who now ministers to decision makers in Washington. "I don't….there is a real good that is infected in people when they are around Jesus talk, and open Bibles, and prayer."

Sentaor Clinton is playing a dangerous game of chicken with her own party, and she should be careful. Her actions are daring the credentials committee to reject her, and if she p..es them off enough they probably will.I am beginning to think that McCain will win this election by a whisper if this continues much longer, and if the Democrats lose this election - whether she or Obama is the nominee - lots of people will begin to look at her and blame her for the loss. What a legacy that would be.

I live in Chicago and know Rev. Meeks….he is NOT a homophobe…he's anti-gay as is the Pope & many religions! You must stop these "bites" from sermons and publish the entire sermon. There continues to be significant racism in America and Americans need to own up to it. Right here in Chicago, black folk are being forced out of their homes and neighborhoods, so white folk can move in because they are tired of the suburbs now. It's really bad for black folk…we live with this s#@$ everyday!

Hillary's former pastor was sentenced to three years in prison for inappropriately touching a 7-year-old girl … maybe you should be researching HER acquaintances more carefully if that is what you base your vote on.

Its just as bad for someone to petition for gay marraige as it is for them to petition against gay marriage. Hello, people on both sides SHOULD be able to have their own opinions.

Hillary was fired by the lead attorney during the Nixon impeachment because he called her dishonest and unethical. She asked for a letter of recommendation and he refused. This story should hit soon if the media does their job. She hid documents that did not support her position for Nixon to be represented by an attorney. She wrote of brief that is presented to the courts she would have been disbarred just like Bubba. This woman has been a lying, dishonest, unethical slease her entire adult life. Wake up you Kool Aide drinkers.

    the lead lawyer words

"At that time Hillary Rodham was 27 years old. She had obtained a position on our committee staff through the political patronage of her former Yale law school professor Burke Marshall and Senator Ted Kennedy. Eventually, because of a number of her unethical practices I decided that I could not recommend her for any subsequent position of public or private trust."

This must stop. For non-Chicago residents let me give you little information. Rev. Wright's church has the largest number of gay members in the city - so many that many of his former chuch members have left his church. More than half is church is GAY. The same goes for Meeks church. Where do you think the gays are? They're in church. Just because Obama is friendly with a politican, reverend, or any elected official does not mean that he supports their beliefs. I know people who have a racist parent,, but they themselves are open to all races. Obama is a well liked politician - that's what they do - they befriend and network to work towards common goals that will help them. I guess you Hilary supporters are grasping at straws and pouncing on any negative Obama "news item" that you can find.

Perez should be a shamed for selective cherry picking.
Hillary lied about Bosnia, report that.
Better yet just encourage people to vote don't slur candidates.

  88. CATHAZAT says – reply to this

Oh please. What about the company McCain keeps. George W. Bush and chronies. Do we want 4-8 more years of that hell? I know a lot of people that don't believe that gay people should be married for example, who don't believe in creation, who vote Republican (God forbid) and who don't necessarily share my viewpoints on every issue. Many devout religious people do not condone homosexuality because of their interpretation of the Bible. If one associates with that person, does that make them complicit? Hillary needs to step out of the race soon so that the party can get behind one candidate and beat McCain. But she is too proud and is not a quitter and would rather bring down the party than to beat the Republicans.

DON'T ASK/DON'T TELL POLICY—The policy was introduced as a compromise measure in 1993 and approved by then President Bill Clinton

"Don't ask, don't tell" is the common term for the U.S. military policy which implements Pub.L. 103-160 (10 U.S.C. § 654). Unless one of the numerous exceptions from 10 U.S.C. § 654(b) applies, the policy prohibits anyone who "demonstrate(s) a propensity or intent to engage in homosexual acts" from serving in the armed forces of the United States, because it "would create an unacceptable risk to the high standards of morale, good order and discipline, and unit cohesion that are the essence of military capability." The policy also requires that as long as gay or bisexual men and women in the military HIDE their sexual orientation, commanders are not allowed to investigate their sexuality. The net effect of this policy is that the military does not take an official stance against gay or bisexual desire; one must engage in open homosexual acts to commit a punishable offense.

so much for your gay pride, Perez.

PIENSA PEREZ, WE WANT YOU TO BE OUR VOICE… DONT SAY THAT we KEEP GETTING DISSAPOINTED BY OBAMA- read please, think, and stop taking money to endorse Clinton without CALLING HER BULLSHIT OUT TOO.
