This is an example of:
negative attention leading to action on the part of a large, inhuman-seeming company that needs to seem human in the public eye. A good use of people-power and especially journalism, bringing this to light to force WalMart to respond.
One small small victory.
Depending on the situation, Wlamart isn't always that bad. Well at least in Canada it isn't. I worked for them for 5 years, a few on cash and the rest in the vision centre(which actually isn't Walmart). They do a lot of things, like raising money and donating it all for charities and their surrounding communities.
Kudos to Perez for bringing this lady's fight with Wal Mart to the attention of so many. When a corporation is greedy enough to try and take $400,000 from an gravely injured former employee we should all stand up and say NO to that company, by not buying their goods. I am glad Wal Mart finally (after a great deal of bad P.R) did right by Debbie and her family. Score 1 point for the little guy!
FIRST! I am so glad to hear Wal Mart did the right thing. I felt so bad for this lady and her family. On top of all this, she also lost a son in the war. Makes me count my blessings.
Thank God. This is the best news I've heard in a while. The Shank family deserves every cent of that money, PLUS some for all of the aggrivation they had to go through.
THANK GOD!!! I've been so active with Wal-Mart Watch trying to get them to realize what they were doing to this poor woman, who freaking GAVE her son to this country!! This poor poor family. I'm so glad!! Thank you Perez for reporting on stuff that matters as well as the ever-entertaining celebrity gossip!! Yay!!!!!!!
Yeah, it's definitely a "we did it" kind of moment.
In the article, a rep for Wal-Mart stated that other people helped them realize they needed to change the rules.
Where did those other people come from in the past .. i dont know, 3 days? .. if not from something as widely read as Perezhilton.com and its readers, including you?
perez, i admire you for using your influence for good. had i not read your website, i wouldn't have known about this. getting this story out there by using this blog is wonderful, and i really really really respect you.
all the haters .. forget about them.
LeonA'$ Gho$T, yep, back and BETTER THAN EVER, biyatches!

Wal-Mart is still a piece of shit. They only did this for the good publicity, not because it was the right thing to do.
I was deeply saddened by this story originally and this definitely made my night to hear that this family is getting what it deserves!!! …and people say perez is not a good site….well this is proof what a little publicity can do for a deserving family in need!!!
Yeah, you didn't do anything but post the article CNN had on THEIR site. If anyone did anything, it was CNN. Yeah, I read it here first, but CNN had it the same night on Anderson Cooper.
amazing
i am shocked.. but for the better
i hope the best of luck to the family and hope wal mart can see what the did should set a president for the future
Its a shame they didn't do the right thing to begin with….that's a start but there is A LOT of things Walmart needs to improve on. When Sam Walton started Walmart it was meant to be an affordable store for the working man….now, his kids have ruined the store and its a monster out-of-control. They want to tap into every market possible, dominate and then destroy the competition…..I support their competitors whenever possible.
What the hell is wrong you?Looks have nothing to do with this, a lot of it probably has to do with the fact that she suffered brain damage in an accident. I'm really happy Wal-Mart decided not to collect the money.
I do agree that you are a huge media resource and that you have a tremendous amount of power, but I think that the mainstream news with its older demographic still has more power.
You didn't contribute to wallmart folding as much as the mainstream coverage. Sure some of your coverage added to the weight on wallmart's back, but it was a small amount when compared to the total.
Of course, I've taken my ambien for the evening, so I may not be making sense.
You didn't do jack squat Perez. All you did was post a link to the article. Your little racist punk ass didn't do squat as you were not the only person on the internet to link to the article and I've seen much bigger call to action than you did on severeal websites that had well over 7000 signatures. Next time you do that, you can say "we" but for now, go post more racist crap.
So now that wal mart did the right thing how about now everyone fights for the lawyer to give her back her 500,000 dollars they took from her. If you want to lay blame you also have to blame the greedy lawyers that took more that half her money. Can't just blame one.
You didn't do anything. CNN and the major news outlets were the people to bring national attention to this story. I want to know why people aren't bashing the lawyers who you know took a rather large chunk of money from this woman. I want to know why people arent' hearing that she's getting medical assistance from the government. You are making Wal-Mart out to be the only bad guy but in reality it's the insurance company - not directly the store chain that faulted here.
you didnt do jack shit.

Stop taking credit for something that you did not accomplish!!! Keith Olbermann brought this story to the nation's attention on MSNBC's Countdown last week. He has a lot more credibiity than a shallow, silly gossip columnist.
walmart was getting really bad publicity and that's what's got them to do the "right thing". Anyhow, I am very happy about the outcome and glad Perez is including social issues in his blog, good for you Perez!
Unfortunately, I'm not sure this is so happy-happy. I read that Wal-Mart DID take the remaining settlement money. She got the 400+ thousand settlement, and after medical expenses she paid while litigation was pending, had 200+thousand left. It looks like Wal-Mart DID take that.
Yahoo……good going Perez!
yay!

We?
You had absolutley nothing to do with it, but if it keeps up your fragile ego and self-confidence, go ahead and exploit a disabled woman's tragedy.
FIRST !
fuck walmart first
W00T!!
It's about time they "did the right thing", but we all know they are just trying to save face..
so happy for her!
Score!!! Thank you, she lives in a town over from us and this is wonderful news. Thanks Perez!!!!
HOORAY!! Finally walmart does something right.

You didn't make anything happen-Keith Olbermann did.
ok, perez, can you set up a fund we can donate to so this family can have help with the bills?
WE did it?

YEA PEREZ! It's nice to see you using your considerable powers of influence/persuasion for good instead of evil =)

Who cares? And you think it was all because of you. I am pretty sure Walmart is not afraid of Perez. To quote Tim Hardaway, I hate gay peoples
GOOD VERY HAPPY….PEREZ I JUST LEARNED THAT BRITNEY SPEARS IS RE-HIRING HER EX -MANAGER LARRY….VERY SAD I DID NOTTT LEARN IT FROM YOU BUUUU HUUUU
poor single mom needs your help please email frecklefaceluv@yahoo.com
Perez, I don't think "We Did it"
I do agree that you are a huge media resource and that you have a tremendous amount of power, but I think that the mainstream news with its older demographic still has more power.

wtf
Stop taking credit for something that you did not accomplish!!! Keith Olbermann brought this story to the nation's attention on MSNBC's Countdown last week. He has a lot more credibiity than a shallow, silly gossip columnist.

big smile — big!
and yes, while Perez and his viewers didn't "do it," he certainly played a part in bringing much needed attention to this situation.
Wahoo!!!!!!! This is so great! I love how the internet has the power connect people for the greater good!
