Oprah Winfrey plans to dedicate Friday's episode of her daytime TV talker to her beloved Cocker Spaniel, Sophie, who died last month from kidney failure.
That's some serious display of love and devotion. We feel ya, O!
The episode will be investigating abuses at puppy mills. Lisa Ling, the show's special correspondent, called the investigation of these mills "horrific" and "haunting."
The Opes says the show is "for anybody anywhere who loves a dog, has ever loved a dog, or just cares about their basic right to humane treatment."
All of Oprah's dogs were adopted through credible breeders but after seeing Ling's report the daytime chat legend says in the future she would look to adopt from an animal shelter.
"I would never, ever adopt another pet now without going to a shelter to do it. I am a changed woman after seeing this show," she says.

THANK YOU OPRAH! I educate people all the time about this unfortunate situation. Nobody understands what a puppy mill is…and the problems that occur. I know a woman who rescued a 4 yr old breeding bitch who spent ALL FOUR YEARS of her life in a tiny cage constantly being bred and having litters. It is a terrible situation, and whenever a person walks into a pet store and purchases a dog they are fueling the puppy mill industry. You can find purebred dogs in shelters, papers and all! Educate yourselves, because I work at a pet supply boutique and people come in with new puppies that they have purchased from pet stores…and surprise! The majority of the dogs have serious ailments that cost their owners thousands of dollars in medical care.
It is sad that we can't save them all, but you can stop fueling this business. Think of a barn, lined from one side to the other with small cages…puppies sitting in the wire cages w/ no bedding or comfy spot to lie in…letting their feces and urine just fall through the cracks. No love, baths, kisses or hugs. I am telling the truth, and it's real. Google puppy mills. See where your Yorkie came from!

I love dogs so much. My two were adopted by reputable breeders…I saw their home and I saw the parents, etc… even still…next time I will rescue a dog. There are too many out there who just want to be loved so much. It breaks my heart.

There are hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats, sitting in kennels in Rescues and Shelters just waiting to be adopted, yet people still think they need to buy a purebred from a pet store! I just adopted my first dog, and i would take in more if i could but i just rent a small house. Funny that Perez would show interest onthis topic…he has been duped into believing his beloved dog did not come from puppymill….he fell into the trap of purchasing a "hybrid" dog…bought from a pet store???? My dog (a 6 year old rescued pit bull) got sick last March. Wrote to Oprah, since I knew she was a dog lover, asking for help to find a veterinarian that could possibly help with the $2,000+ neurological testing my dog needed. Never heard a word. My dog died on April 13th.
She didn't ADOPT her dogs from a breeder…..SHE BOUGHT THEM.

Breeders should have to pay a puppy fee everytime one of thier dogs gives birth. The money should go into a fund for nonprofits that rescue dogs.
What ever happend to Oprah not every eating beef again after seeing the slaughter houses? Just last week Billy Joel's wife made her meatloaf on her show, which she sat there and ate. Oprah clearly doesn't take the humane treatment of animals very seriously, her word means nothing. Nice try though O.

I work a couple of blocks from Harpo Studios, for a couple of months there was a huge billboard that read, please Oprah do a show on puppy mills! Good to see that she took notice of such an important issue.

Yes, adopt from animal shelters. Puppy mills and unscrupulous breeders suck and all they want is your cash. Why would you pay thousands for a pure breed dog when you can get a dog from a shelter for less than $120 dollars in some cases? It's beyond me.
Normally I can't stand Oprah, but I give her props for doing a show about this topic. She actually has the power to put puppy mills out of business. I hope she does some follow up on it.

Nobody "adopts" from a breeder, credible or not. They BUY. You adopt from a shelter. I'm sure Oprah purchased her dogs, for a wild sum of money.
Perez, I think Teddy is a doll, but I hope in the future you will make better decisions as to where you get your own dogs from. I find it hypocritical that you would post this entry, as well as encourage your readers to give donations to shelters and rescuers, when you have your own designer dog (which I doubt came from a shelter). I think it is great that you are helping to bring awareness to these issues, so I will give you the benefit of the doubt. Peace!

I have emailed and written the oprah show for years concerning doing a show about animal overpopulation and irresponsible breeders. She did purchase all of her dogs from breeders and didn't feel a bit bad about it. I find it hard to believe she did not know of the situation with overpopulation and animal shelters. I read it almost everyday in my papers.
I am surprised that Oprah didn't figure that she should adopt from a shelter before this. There are many pure bred dogs at the shelter if you require some guarantee on how big your dog will get, etc. I have adopted two dogs from the shelter. They have been a total pleasure. Many appear hyper when you see them because they are stressed from being in a shelter but as soon as you get them home they settle down. The thing I like about getting a dog from the shelter is that many of them as were mine were adult dogs and you definately can choose the personality of your dog. It is quite evident. Also my dogs were both trained exceptionally …don't bet, don't go in the house, don't bark, and walk properly on a leash. Catch frisbees and return them. Someone spent a lot of time with these dogs. It must have been heartbreaking to give them up.
Typical Oprah- she learns about puppy mills when everyone else on the PLANET has known about puppy mills for years and years. Then she presents it as NEWS and boo hoos into the audience over this TERRIBLE thing- and then preaches how she is reformed. What an IDIOT- this is the usual Oprah crap. Another revelation of her ignorance. And the stupid white women who follow Oprah and make her rich, sit and wipe their eyes and shake their heads in the shared misery that soaks into the Oprah audience. Thank goodness! This is a tremendous event for animal advocates everywhere! This show will bring as ease to the suffering of so many animals just by bringing awareness to so many viewers. First of all to all the people that are saying negative things about Oprah and her doing this show are very close minded people. This is a very necessary show just like all the other shows she does all year round to help people as well. I thank Perez for posting this and all of the information on charitable and very important causes. As for asking whether or not Perez got his job from a breeder - her show is not to show how all breeders are bad but to disclose that MOST pet shops get their dogs from Puppy Mills that basically just leave a female in a crate and get her pregnant time and time again - a horrific life. Why is this such a horrible Idea for Oprah to do this show - speaking for millions of defenseless animals that all they need is love and attention. Bottom line - check out your shelters first, go to petfinder.com to find any breed you want and when and if that fails - research your breeder you choose. Watch the show and then judge. As for doing a show on how to pay your bills - you should have watched yesterday's show it was about money issues…Go Perez..keep using your name for good.

And what exactly is a "responsible breeder"? Vets say never let a dog have more than two litters in a lifetime, but you can bet no breeder ever stops at that. And if they breed because they truly love the purebred line, why do they charge for it? They should be doing it for the love - like that would ever happen.
I would like to ask the "responsible breeders" out there - what do you do with the puppies with defects that make them unsellable, and the bitches when they can't make any more money for you? Chances are you dump them at the shelter for decent people to take in. I am out there on the frontlines and I have yet to meet a breeder who didn't abuse their moneymakers in some way.
Until there are none, adopt one!!!!
That's awesome! I am a HUGE dog lover and I will be watching on FRI. My dog Sophia just passed away in FEB from strange disease and it was absolutely heart breaking.

Good for Oprah! There are so many sweet, loving animals in shelters right now waiting for loving homes. Oprah has so much influence with the public and hopefully this will encourage people to go out to the shelters and save these wonderful animals from certain death.
About effin' time Oprah. I have two dogs, both rescues, and I cry everytime I hear about a homeless pet being euthanized for no other reason than nobody adopted them. SPAY AND NEUTER!
Finally Oprah "gets it". It's annoyed me for years that she's always had to have the designer dogs when thousands of shelter dogs get "put down" every week. Hopefully having Oprah on the bandwagon will bring even more attention to the awesome pets waiting in shelters.
