Tonight I had the unfortunate experience of watching Greg Gutfeld's segment titled "Transgender-iffic: Pregnant man tells Oprah it's a miracle" and was shocked and disgusted by his transgenderphobic, highly ignorant rant. I'm not familiar with "Red-Eye," but even assuming that this is some controversial, opinionated late-night segment is not enough to justify what he said about Thomas Beatie. Comments like "twenty years ago this person would be traveling in a carnival" and calling him a "sideshow" and "creature" are completely unnecessary. While I can understand that he is trying to voice his opinion, there is a way to do this without being so insensitive and offensive to not only the LGBT community, but to any Americans aware of the hardship, mockery, humiliation and discrimination transgendered people go through on a daily basis.

He asks why the "politically correct" media insists on referring to Mr. Beatie as "him/he"–it may well be because he /legally/ changed his sex years ago. Mr. Beatie is legally a male, therefore insisting on calling him otherwise is wrong.

This, however, is not the part of his show that disgusted me the most. He also call Mr. Beatie a "misguided individual" and in "need of therapy." What exactly gives someone like him the right to deduce who is in need of psychological help? As far as I am concerned, it is not /he/ who is in need of therapy. Whether or not Mr. Beatie needs help is not something for him to determine and I am fairly certain he is not qualified to come to that conclusion anyway. He is essentially calling him misguided because he does not have the same sexual orientation as you do.

During the majority of his segment he says nothing of value. Instead, he eggs on the equally-hostile and equally-ignorant comments of his guests. Tracy Byrnes wishes Mr. Beatie "the worst experience of his life" then goes on to say she "hope[s] he dies." Hate-fueled comments like this are never necessary or appropriate.
