When they run out of original scripts, they resort to taking ideas from television.
Universal Pictures is making an adaption of the '80s TV show Magnum P.I., which starred the perpetually mustached Tom Selleck.
Selleck played a detective with a Navy Seal background. And set to take his place in the movie version is?
Matthew McConaughey!
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that McConaughey was offered the role of Thomas Magnum.
McConagay is said to be reading the script from the movie's writer and director, Rowson Thurber, who also worked on Dodgeball.
Mateo should be deciding shortly if he will be confirming the role.
Would U go watch Magnum P.I. if McConaughey was in it?
We'd rather see Fletch, Jr.!

Tom Selleck is bisexual. My friends brother who has since died of aids, had an affair with Tom in the 70s. Completely serious.
They are both the hottest men on the planet, but I think that's were their similarities end. I just can't see Matt as the ultra-cool Magnum PI, but I would love to see a movie version of it. I think I would probably want to see it even more if the original guy was involved somehow.

Matt is great looking and all. But Selleck added charm, intelligence and charisma to the role which I don't think Matt has.
I love Magnum PI and Mateo is PERFECT for the part. i think they should redo Fletch as well, but I think Ashton Kutcher and Kate Hudson would be an unbeilevalbly awesome duo in that remake, and I would spend money at the theatre to see it.

McConoughey would be a joke in this role. McConoughey is a joke in any role. I would not watch it.
Magnum was the best show on TV. I think it would be great to introduce Magnum to today's audience. But not with McConaughey. He just doesn't have the intelligence and charm Selleck has.
I think Matt would be ok in it…nothing more. Selleck owned that role. When I think of Magnum, the only one I picture is Tom Selleck.

I was just a tot when Magnum aired in the 80's. Now I watch the reruns and love it (my god the hottness!). Selleck was (and still is) so sexy and had this charming way about him. Matt's adorable, I just can't picture him as Magnum. Nothing against Matt though.

Both guys are sexier than hell. So I guess it would be ok with me. I just think Tom Selleck made that role everything that it was. He's an icon. I'd probably want to see the movie a hell of a lot more if Selleck was in it.

NO respect for him since he jumped in Owen's grave (so to speak) in "Tropic Thunder", especially since he's friends with Owen and Woody … Matty HAD potential and used to be really hot. There is something really creepy about this McConaughey guy. I thought at first it was that he didn't have any facial hair and looked like a woman…but he does seem to have facial hair. Then I thought it was his mouth–when I saw some of the movie We Are Marshall, my God I was shocked to see him talking out the right side of his face! His mouth moved all the way there when talking! That was DISGUSTING. Is that how he talks?!!? There is something MAJOR unattractive about this buy, Bruce Jenner (the decathalon guy) kind of unattractive. EUWWWWWW!

Actually, it's RAWSON Thurber, I grew up with him and went to Elem-Highschool with him and his siblings. He didn't just "work" on Dodgeball, he wrote the whole movie. I am sure he would do great things with the Magnum script, as he is a really talented writer.
Tom was born to do Magnum. He is the only one I can imagine in the movie. I guess Matt would be my second choice. I just really think both of them should be in it somehow. Otherwise, I don't think I would want to see it.

You have got to be joking!!!! McConaughey to play Magnum, that has got to be one of the most ridiculous ideas I have ever heard of! Mr. Tom Selleck is only one to play the role of Magnum P.I. there are no exceptions or alternatives. Besides , if you look at it strictly from a finical point of view, the studios would double or possibly even triple the money it would take to do this movie by having Selleck reprise his roll as Magnum. McConaughey….No Way!
As Jonathon Quale Higgins would say…OH MY GOD!!!!! MY husband is a huge Magnum fan and I have begun to watch it. We cannot see Matthew play Magnum. Tom Selleck should keep the role he was born to play. Now, if they want to make MM a role for the movie as Rick Wright, then I wouldn't care less.

Tom's a sweetie. I worked as an extra on the Las Vegas set. We weren't allowed to speak to the actors. Tom was the only actor who looked me in the eye…smiled, and said good morning. Pure class. And he's is even sexier in person.
