In Memoriam

Today is the 40th anniversary of the death of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, one of the greatest Americans to ever live.

Today is also Heath Ledger's birthday. He would have turned 29.

Let us remember both!

trivializing MLK's life by including him in a post with heath ledger? no offense to heath, but that's fucked up.

Umm you cant even put these two in the same category. What did Heath do to change the views of America?!?!? This is an insult to Martin Luther King and what he fought for. You can dish about Celebs but you can give this man respect enough to have his OWN memorandum issued in a seperate statement from a celebrity?? You have got to be kidding me

Well intentioned to be sure, but honestly I think Dr. King deserves a separate "Let's Remember Great People" bracket from Heath Ledger. Then again, he was all about equality…

How can you compare the death of Martin Luther King to Heath Ledgers birthday?

One died due to mixing medications
The other was murdered because he was trying to change the world

Not that i'm trying to take anything away from Heath Ledger, he was a great actor and dying at 28 is a tragedy… but lets have a little perspective.

No offense Heath, but MLK deserves his own memorial.

    46. David A. says – reply to this

      46

Honestly, Perez. Keep these two notes separate. Will all due respect to Mr. Ledger's family, there is nothing remotely similar about the impact these two public figures had in our lives. Particularly for you, what MLK did in terms of opening the doors to tolerance and civil rights was instrumental in allowing you (an myself) to have the success you have today and the respect of the media and business world. If you feel the need to mention passings and/or anniversaries of figures outside of the entertainment world, I suggest you put a bit more thought into the context and the manner you present them. I have to say I do think doing it is great since in the midst of all the crazyness in the entertainment world, you give us a pause to think about truly meaningful things so by all means keep doing it. I'm just suggesting you don't get the real world too mixed in with the one that's populated by stars–both tragic and fierce!!! Keep it going, Perez!!!

    47. nano says – reply to this

    53. know the facts says – reply to this

      53

MLK - if he wasn't shot he would have been arrested within a day or two and would have gone to jail. The night before he was killed spent the night with prostitutes, one of which he beat. This is only the tip of the iceburg. Look into the facts, his image is totally falsified. When his fbi records were to be released they went to court to stop it on the grounds that it would "permanently damage his reputation".

Re: know the facts – Wow! people are so self rigteous and blatantly disrespectful that it is a shame. #1 these two shouldn't be named in the same post seeing as one gave his life for the nation. 2 So what if he had prostitutes, it still doesn't change what he stood for, lived for, and died for. Npt just for african americans, but for all AMericans to be treated equally and justly. Trust me, each and everyone of us have been impacted by the civil rights movement. The FBI taps may show that he had sexual infidelities, but lets pull out ur skeletons and see what we find. That just goes to show you that nobody's perfect!

REV MARTIN LUTHER KING IN THE SAME SENTENCE WITH A DRUG ADDICTED/PSYCHOLOGICALLY TRAGIC ACTOR IS WRONG. PERHAPS WE SHOULD ALL TRIVIALIZE THE EFFORTS OF ALL CUBANS AS BEING NOTHING MORE THAN RICKY RICARDO REJECTS? SINCE YOU LIVE AND MAKE MONEY IN AMERICA, YOU SHOULD RESPECT THOSE BLACKS IN THIS OFTEN F*CKED UP COUNTRY WHO LIVED TO HELP AND HEAL RATHER THAN HURT. as a civil rights student i believe that martin luther king was something of a fraud. he was an educated, upper middle class scholar who had very little in common with the people he was supposedly "representing". he just managed to be in the right place at the right time and, most importantly, did not offend white people. he was an uncle tom figure who the whites could keep in their place and that's why he's so popular. he was WHITE FRIENDLY!!! the real hero of the civil rights movement is MALCOLM X. he WAS an oppressed black man. he OPPOSED white policies and advocated black rights. he referred to mlk as a house negro. the white man's bitch. if you americans want to worship a real hero, worship Malcolm X. he influenced the black panthers and the black power movement, without which the black community in america would still be sat outside town halls singing "we shall overcome" while the white man run's his business and spends his money.
and just for the record, i'm white.

      91

THE TIMELY DEATH OF MLK STIFILED ANY ATTEMPT TO CREATE A BLACK REVOLUTION IN THE STREETS OF THE USA. AMERICA NEVER REALIZED HOW CLOSE A BLACK/WHITE STREET WAR WAS BEING FOMENTED.
THE NON-VIOLENT MLK CREATED VIOLENCE EVERYWHERE.
HIS DREAM WOULD NEVER HAVE MATERIALIZED.

    92. MLK's not a fraud says – reply to this

      92

Re: amycakes – You don't think upper middle class blacks should help the "opressed" blacks? If he's in the position and has the resources then why not? Are you saying that the only people fit to campaign for blacks are the ghetto and downtrodden? MLK was about racial equality through peace while Malcolm X was about black superiority through any means possible. I don't know which one you prefer but I think peace and equality is much more important.

And I'm not hatin on Malcolm X because he was very important to the Civil Rights. The media set the 2 up as rivals and made Malcolm the "violent" one which is why I think so many people (non-blacks included) were willing to accept MLK's plea because at least it wasn't violent.

    93. Rachel says – reply to this

      93

Heath Ledger's death was certainly a tragedy, but grouping it in the same category with Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination is an insult to Dr. King's family and an insult to the entire Civil Rights Movement. You encourage your readers to let members of the media know when they are out of line - and you are. The least you could do is acknowledge that you were wrong in grouping Heath Ledger and Dr. King in the same post.

    94. cass says – reply to this

      94

No offence but heath didnt have to die.
He sorta chose too since he basically overdosed on shit.
MLK on the other hand fought for the rights of his brothers and sisters.
He was a great man and he saved probably MILLIONS of lives.
I'm sorry heath is gone, but he took his life.
      MLK gave his life.

      96

Sweet how you want to separate the Black man and the White man from a column, isn't that what MLK fought for so we could be in the same place or mentioned in the same breath, not to walk on egg shells.

Seriously, black people need to shut the fuck up and assimilate like the Asian and Latino people do, you don't see them complaining as much and they are respected, you got what you wanted and you want more that's why your people will always be second class.

      99

I love how the first comment is about Heath Ledger. Don't get me wrong..I believe that remembering him on his birthday is important..but this is the 40th anniversary of the death of one of the greatest men the world has ever been blessed with. respect history or not, people cannot deny what he did in his life for the United States.

I guess that comment just shows how unaware people of our generation are. Thank you for recognizing him Perez..his legacy lives on.

No offense to Heath Ledger or the person making the comment..just felt in retrospect looking back on MLK's life, that was not the comment I would expect to see to this post.
