They did it again!

According to a new LA Times report, the UCLA Medical Center worker who peeked into the confidential medical records of Farrah Fawcett also improperly viewed the files of 32 other celebrities, politicians and high-profile patients, including Arnold the Governator's wife, Maria Shriver.

However, UCLA assures us that the rogue snooper probably did not share any info with the tabloids, based on a review of the employee's e-mails and phone calls.

Or so they would like us to believe!!!

Did they check the employees home phone or computer? The snooper could have cut the deals outside of the hospital!

Celebs should start bringing their lawyers, armed with hefty confidentiality agreements, to their UCLA doctor's appointments.

I work as a RN in a hospital. You have to sign a confidentiality agreement when you are hired. That there are hospital workers doing this kind of thing is just reprehensible. Because of HIPPA, the new confidentiality laws, that worker at UCLA could not only be fined a LOT of money but also could technically get some jail time. If you come to the hospital you should expect a certain level of care and UCLA has totally violated that standard. Shame on them and their workers.

    23. Zero Tolerance. says – reply to this

      23

There HAS to be zero tolerance. Accessing personal medical records is illegal. Even more so, it's completely medically unethical. A person who is sick in hospital needs to trust that institution to take care of them as they try to get well. Protecting and trusting that their medical privacy is being gaurded while they can't fend for themselves is an integral part of that care package. It has to be assumed the information, if accessed by unrelated personnel, COULD be shared.

"Celebs should start bringing their lawyers, armed with hefty confidentiality agreements, to their UCLA doctor's appointments. "

and if i were their doctor, i'd tell them to find another practitioner. Doctors and nurses are already required to sign such confidentiality agreements, so making them sign another isn't going to do a hell of a lot of good, and makes the person demanding them to do so look like a pompous, ignorant, ass.

of course you WOULD think that celebrites should use their money and clout to get special treatment…

I work at UCLA Medical Center, and it's a pretty tight ship their. SO whoever did this, will be fired. And by the way…. in May the medical center moves into a new hospital where security of patients info will be extremely difficult to access if they are not under your direct care.

Re: Heather – YEah shame on the people that did that. But you can't blame the entire hospital. It only takes one person to make the #3 hospital in the country look bad.

UCLA (and Cedars?) have to establish better security measures to make access to records more difficult. It doesn't do much good to find records have been accessed AFTER the fact.
There are computers both inside and outside of these hospitals that provide access to records. I went to a private doctor's office, he's allowed to practice at Cedars. He sat there in his examining room and accessed all of my Cedar's records on a little computer. Same is true with UCLA. I go to an allergist's office who has permission to practice at UCLA. They can access all of my medical records from their office. Computer access is all over the place.

UCLA has to come up with better security systems for their records. A few years ago a hacker accessed tens of thousands of alumni records from UCLA's "secure" system. Info included stuff like Social Security numbers. Should anyone have more confidence in their security for medical records???

UCLA, and the NPI Hospital- Semel Institute, are notorious for their behavior. I have worked at UCLA for over 20 years and have seen it all. Professors harass employees (both sexually and racially) and the university is bound to protect the professor/doctors. UCLA reps knowingly lie rather that just admit fault and take care to the situation. There are several doctors/professors who have had several lawsuits filed against them, still working at the university. Rather than take away the professor/doctors tenure and fire the guilty…the university systematically get rid of "trouble makers" and cross their fingers that the guilty has learned their lesson. There is a reason why they are labeled "Repeat Offenders". Don't fool yourselves UCLA, like many educational institutions, are no longer schools..they are corporations.

This is, unfortunately, extremely common. I work at a large medical center and the administration monitors who accesses patients' medical records. FYI, you can have access to your medical records locked so that no one can get into them unless the medical records department unlocks them. Can create a bit of a problem when you have an appointment though.
