know there are some on here who think Madonna is leagues better than Mariah, and some who think they aren't similar at all, and I'm not writing this to compare them in that sense, but because they're the two biggest female artists of the last two decades… Has anyone else noticed a similar pattern in their careers? I've always felt like Butterfly was Mariah's Like a Prayer. It displayed that she was capable of more than just pop fluff. And I've always felt like Glitter was Mariah's Erotica. Even though, sales wise, it was more like her American Life, it was her first "flop" and even though Erotica obviously wasn't a flop in retrospect, it was considered a big disappointment following nearly a decade of non-stop hits…similar to Mariah in the '90s leading up to Glitter. So, if Glitter was her Erotica, then the Charmbracelet period was kind of like her Bedtime Stories/Evita stage. Obviously, BS was much more successful than Charmbracelet, but work with me here…

That brings us to The Emancipation of Mimi, which really put Mariah back on top. Like Ray Of Light, it reinvigorated her career and garnered her an Album of the Year Grammy nomination. Both women won a bunch of Grammys at this respective stage in their careers.
After Ray Of Light, Madonna went on to do make a more fun album (Music) and had lots of success, though it wasn't quite as big as ROL. Mariah's new album seems to be similar in that sense. My guess is that it will be successful but not as big as TEOM.
So what's next for Mimi? She's a little bit younger than Madonna was at this point, so she could last a little while longer but a flop the size of American Life is bound to happen, right? Only time will tell if the pattern continues…
