Some Good News

Filed under: Sad Sad > Patrick Swayze

wenn845027__opt.jpg

As we're all sadly aware of, Patrick Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this year.

Now, Swayze and his doctor are stating that the treatment is working! They said the response to the treatment was "excellent."

Great news! Or are they just trying to keep everyone optimistic?

Pancreatic cancer is (until now) incurable.

Patrick and his wife told People, "We're thrilled and grateful for the positive response Patrick has shown towards his treatment. Also, we can't help but feel that all the prayers, meditations and good thoughts sent his way by everyone has made a difference. Thank you!"

Swayze's physician added that Patrick "continues to respond well to his treatment for pancreatic cancer. Because of his excellent response, he will continue the same therapy at Stanford."

Let's keep sending over those positive thoughts! He still needs them!

Hey - pancreatic cancer can be treated successfully if the patient is a candidate for the whipple procedure. (My dad died of this in 2004). If the cancer is limited to one side, they can remove it and the patient receives chemo/radioation like any other cancer. If it is too far spread through the pancreas or has spread elsewhere (my dad's case), there is no cure. But, my dad made it 26 months on a 5 month prognosis.

Best wishes to Swayze - it's a horrible disease and really hard on the family.

People do survive pancreatic cancer. Like any cancer, each person is individual. Statistical analysis is not helpful.

  24. n says – reply to this

    24

the only cure to pancreatic cancer is surgery and this is incredibly risky and can only be done in a few cases. pancreatic cancer is probably the most lethal cancer there is and average life expectancy from diagnosis is usually less than 6 months - it presents late and spreads early. any therapy he's on will only be treating the symptoms not the actual cancer.
moral of the story - DONT SMOKE

  41. DeeDee says – reply to this

    41

I fully believe every word of this statement…..I personally KNOW someone who was treated for pancreatic cancer by the same doctor at Stanford that is treating Patrick. After surgery & 6 mos of very aggressive treatment, he's officially in remission. While it still remains a lethal form of cancer, there have been amazing advances. This is wonderful news…but he really does need to try to quit smoking ;)

  42. Katie says – reply to this

    42

It is NOT incurable. I know of one person that overcame it too like 10 years ago. Get your facts straight. Highly unlikely but NOT incurable!

  43. Jordana says – reply to this

    43

There are only 2 cancers that are actually curable and it still takes 5 years of no recurrences for it to be considered cured.
There is a big difference between treatable and curable.
Just because the cancer isn't curable doesn't mean he can't live a very long life.

    47

Perez, it is irresponsible and misguided to say that pancreatic cancer is (until now) incurable. Do your research–while it is not easily cured, people do go into remission and have for years–if it is caught early enough.

  48. Lisa says – reply to this

    48

Yeah… we have a family friend who had pancreatic cancer. It was caught early enough, she had treatment, and made a full recovery. So no, it's not "incurable"..

  49. abby says – reply to this

    49

my mother in law is pancreatic cancer free for over 15ys now and is showing no signs of slowing down. It took a few years at the mayo clinic to get her there though.

  50. Mary K says – reply to this

    50

Pancreatic cancer is not incurable if it is caught in its very early stages. while it is one of the most deadly cancers people do survive it. I am not a Doctor so I could be wrong but from what I have read you can survive it. My father just passed away on Thursday of cancer….he had it in his lungs then it spread to his bones.
I hope Patrick wins this fight because it is a terrible way to die. It is not only hard on the people fighting it but on the people who love them. I had to watch my father suffer everyday….I don't wish this on anyone….Patrick seems to be doing very well though and I hope he keeps on the way he is.

  51. kelly says – reply to this

    51

Perez, you're wrong about pancreatic cancer being incurable. My uncle had that, and they gave him 3 months! He did and unconventional method of treatment, and it went away even after the cancer spread. This was about 4 years ago, he's healthier then ever now. There is still much hope for Patrick Swayze :)

    57

If you want to know what pancreatic cancer is and what it does watch 20/20 tomorrow night. Diane Sawyer is going to interview PC patient and Carnegie Mellon professor Randy Pausch.

Pancreatic cancer is very deadly. I would imagine if Patrick did not have surgery (the whipple) that his only hope is chemo. Chemo only does so much. If they can get it all this time, it will come back. It is a pretty persistent killer. I would imagine the good news right now is that the tumors are not growing and that his vitals are still stable enough to continue the treatment, which might not always be the case. I lst my dad to this 9 months ago. It is a hard road to go down and very few people survive. I am praying that he does.

    62

I'm sorry but this is total bullshit. My mother died of pancreatic cancer 5 months ago and so I've learned a lot about the disease in the past few months. From the minute you develop the first cancer cell on your pancreas, you're in trouble. For Swayze's reps (and I love Swayze) to say he is responding well to treatment is like a slap in the face to all of us who have lost loved ones to this incredibly horrific disease. Shame on them for purporting such false hope.

    65

I feel for patrick swayze and his family. PC is a very aggressive cancer. My dad died of it only three short months ago. I hope for patrick he is doing as well as the reports lead on. But i can't help but think that it's only a matter of time before the cancer wins. The five year survival rate is brutal..you are lucky to make it past 6months if that. For those who are bashing him for still smoking, i say leave the man alone. If it helps him through the pain of this cancer, both mental and physical let him do it. Honestly, let the man live his life because his time is limited. Until you live through this cancer you will never fully understand how horrible it is.

    67

thank you so much to #63 Riss. I'm glad someone said what i was thinking. Whoever repsonse to this article with the idea that PC is cureable and survivalbe are doing a great disservice to those who have lost loved ones to the disease. Just because someone was able to be part of the lucky 5% who are able to live 5 years or longer are completely giving readers the wrong idea. be thankful you friends, family or whoever lived! I haven't read that comment yet. Don't just say, "it's possible" you're being so rude to the other people who weren't so lucky as to those who ever able to survive. You completley omit all the hard treatment and reactions they went through to get heathly. Unless you've been through it, don't be so quick to judge. It's one of the worse things someone could go through, please at lease acknowledge that, if anything.

  68. jim says – reply to this

You people that have lost loved ones -it is horrible (I lost someone to a brain tumor) but it does not mean that everyone is going to lose their loved ones also. Every person & every tumor is different.

    70

CORRECTION: Pancreatic cancer is not nor has it been incurable in some time. My grandmother had pancreatic cancer in 1999 and with surgery to remove a portion of her pancreas and treatment was cured. She is still alive with no signs of cancer almost 10 years later.

  71. Sue says – reply to this

    71

Sorry Perez but "a positive response" to cancer treatment does not mean you are better - it just means there's a reduction in the amount of detectable cancer. Is that good? Yes. Does it mean he's cured? Not even close. Generally to be considered "cured" you need to have zero dectable cancer for FIVE YEARS. Not one fairly good assessment. I love Patrick Swayze - I hope for the best for him.

  72. nessa says – reply to this

    72

  76. McKenna says – reply to this

    76

Why do they say pancreatic is the most lethal? Isn't stomach cancer just as bad? Everyone I know with stomach cancer was dead within a few months. What a horrible disease and to get that diagnosis must be absolutely devastating.

  77. beatie says – reply to this

    77

Ayyy Perez.. EVERY type of cancer is incurable, because cancer is incurable… However, I do have to say that the prognosis on pancreatic cancer is one of, if not, the least promising. I had a very close relative die of this and it was horrible what he went through. Doctors do say that this is the worst and the most cruel forms of cancer. I really hope they are able to control it.

  78. Jordana says – reply to this

    78

Just because people live many years in remission does not mean they are cured of cancer. Like I stated before there are only 2 curable cancers.
A cancer can be treatable and maintained but will most likely (even if person feels healthy and in remission) will still linger.

  79. nicki says – reply to this

    79

Re: Elizabeth – it isn't curable!!! treatable, can't be cured though!

  80. eastcoastgossip says – reply to this

    80

this is nice, but he is still smoking! there is a picture that was shown tonight on CNN. what type of message is that sending? why bother with treatment if you are still inhaling carcinogens? STUPID!!!!!

  81. beatie says – reply to this

    81

Re: McKenna – Well.. I am not a doctor either but its the activity level of the pancreas that makes is so lethal. Its an endocrine gland that is also right next to your liver and stomach as well. It is more active than even the stomach because it regulates your blood sugar constantly by producing and releasing insulin and glucagon into your blood stream. So basically it can spread cancer cells much faster and to a greater distance. Basically you dont die because one organ stopped working, you die because you are infested with cancer (you have it everywhere). My close, close relative that died was throwing up chunks of his internal organs 4 days before he died.. Thats how cruel it is..

  82. Pancreatic Cancer IS curable says – reply to this

    82

If Perez reads these AT ALL ..

I've never posted before, but this medical "news" is not accurate and it steams me a little.

"Pancreatic cancer is (until now) incurable." IS NOT accurate.

My grandmother had pancreatic cancer many, many years ago and was cured at The Mayo Clinic. She was the oldest living survivor until a car accident took her life a few months ago.

Perez - get your facts straight.

  83. Anna says – reply to this

    83

Cancer can get you no matter how you live. My grandmother who never smoked a cigarette in her life died of lung cancer.
Does Swayze need to give up smoking? He sure should give it up. But I think, one thing comes after another. First he needs to get better as far as his pancreas goes (I know it's not cureable, but with responding good to treatment he might prolong his time a little longer) and then he can quit smoking. Cause that's not easy. You don't just throw away your pack, put on a nicotine pad and be done with it. They don't call it addiction because they were looking for a funny 9-letter-word. Many smokers say that having a cigarette calms them down and if it does that for Patrick Swayze let him have it a little while longer.

  84. Just Me says – reply to this

Uh, hello? Do you even read what you write Perez? You RUB IN the fact that it is incurable yet you wish him well.

    This is AMAZING NEWS!! YAY!!

  87. Laura says – reply to this

    87

parcreatic cancer is "incurable." by the time symptoms show up it is often too late to operate. Also, there are 2 types of pancreatic caner. The more common cancer which effects the exocrine part of the pancreas (the part that makes digestive juices) and the lesser common cancer which effects the endocrine part (the part that makes horomones) The endocrine cancer has a much better prognosis; about 60-80% live past 5 years. That's probably the kind Swayze has.

  88. Dee says – reply to this

    88

I would like to start by saying my grandfather (who is actually fairly young) also has pancreatic cancer. He was diagnosed with it only 5 months ago and is now laying on his death bed. It is nice to know that the Patrick's treatment is "working", however it is kind of hard to believe seeing as how most cases of pancreatic cancer are not detected early enough to be treated effectively.

As for the comment earlier on the doctor at Stanford who's treatment seems to be working for this type of cancer. What about the rest of the world? Is this another example of the outrageous health care system in America? Can only the rich afford this? If this is the case for Swayze (the fact that he can afford to have expensive and effective treatment for this type of cancer), he should be fortunate that he can afford to do so.

  89. Lillie Bean says – reply to this

    89

It is not incurable Perez! Steve Jobs successfully battled pancreatic cancer, as did a friend of mine. Watch what you say.

    91

The extremely profitable American cancer industry is extremely paranoid of any competition and attacks anything seen as a threat to it monopoly. Only use alternative medicine to handle cancer. We all know that radiation and toxic chemicals CAUSE cancer, yet this is what conventional American medicine uses to "cure" it. Yeah right. They have no intention of curing you. The cancer nearly always spreads to other body parts using these methods. Ask an educated victim and they'll tell you this is how it works. Take my advice and you will be increasing you chances for survival greatly.

  92. Lebon says – reply to this

    92

It is effectively incurable. Of course there are the odd cases of spontaneous remission but that does not mean there is a cure for the disease, only that there is reason to hope you are one of the very rare lucky ones. My mom died of pancreatic cancer and if anyone was going to beat it it was her. She responded well to her treatment for about a year but then it stopped working and she died 18 months after being diagnosed. She was always very fit, never smoked, ate right and exercised regularly. To quote her doctor when he told us of her prognosis this disease is very very bad.

  93. Lebon says – reply to this

    93

American cancer industry? What kind of nonsense is that? The drugs are made by multiple companies and what benefit do they get from giving you drugs that kill you? They stand to make more money if they can figure out a way to keep you alive. "Alternative" medicine is every bit as much of an industry and often far more shady and dangerous because there is no regulation and anyone can claim anything is a treatment, and they usually do. They take advantage of people's idealistic hopes for a "natural" miracle cure when people are faced with the sobering reality of their disease and desperate.

  94. Doesn't everyone know this? says – reply to this

    94

ALL CANCER IS INCURABLE! There is NO SUCH THING as cancer being "cured". One can go into remission, but never cured.

  95. Noelle says – reply to this

    95

75% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer die within one year. Less than 5% of people diagnosed are alive 5 years after diagnosis. Pancreatic cancer is an extremely agressive disease and, contrary to what others have said, little progress has been made (research wise) on PC in the past 20 yrs. Pancreatic cancer is where breast cancer research was in 1934!! My mother died in December after an 18 month battle. I wish Patrick the best and hope he overcomes the odds. Statistics tell what has happened to others-not what WILL happen to a newly diagnosed patient. My thoughts and prayers to all affected by this disease.

  97. minime says – reply to this

    97

The sad thing is that he's probably in denial.

Doctors try to be uplifting and positive when people are trying experimental procedures because it is another chance that they may find a cure for an otherwise incurable disease. The Docs simply have no choice but to be upbeat, because even if it does fail, it still puts them a step closer to finding another medical miracle.

There are a ton of upbeat people in the world that go through a sense of denial, as well, when faced with their own mortality. This is especially true for those who are wealthy. Many people still believe that money can take care of anything, but that's not always the case.
