It is a worthwhile cause, but than again I personally think charity begins at home, not far from me are some of the poorest people in the world!we should all try to help those around us first and then the people overseas.BUT when I have extra money I will do both!

I'd much rather give to our American needy and homeless….we have plenty of orphans, elderly and impoverished to help here……we do plenty of outsourcing, their own governements and people can help them…..they bitch and moan when we watch our for ourselves, but are all sitting ready with their hands out…

Running out of things to post Perez? You are a Celebrity Gossip Blog. If YOU want to donate to charity, go ahead and do that. But no need to use it as a page filler for your site.

As an orphanage, don't you think that they should have something posted about adoption? I live in Canada and the very first thing I thought about was "are these kids adoptable?" Donations are great, but very few of these children will have the same opportunities that they would have if they were adopted out of that system. I will see if I can dig up some more info. It's nice to see something like this on here for a change.

I get solicited at the office via fax, phone, and mail. I get solicited at home via phone and mail and door knockers. We are hammered daily on TV, radio, etc., with commercials. I do not come to this site to be solicited for something else. Instead, I come to get away from it all.

Although a good cause, I agree with the poster who said we should start giving here, in the good old USofA first.

Please either stop the charity/soliciting stuff or put it in a sidebar on your site.

Dearest Perez. Have you stopped to think that maybe for every child your misdirected charity saves, they grow up and have several more children to starve, when the money runs out? You are doing more harm than good here. They are going to breed and breed, until resources run out and massive starvation ensues. Invest in farm equipment and teach them to grow their own food, rather than feed them until they are last weeks news and forgotten. Roegster

Re: mselle – So, it looks like it is a difficult process. Preference is given to Mexican nationals (whom you would think would be solving this problem within their own country and not have people like me in Calgary, Alberta, Canada looking at their website wondering how to rescue one of these kids from a life of poverty & certain doom) and I have been unable as of yet to find out how much $ (because it all boils down to that) it would take to adopt a child from there. Very frustrating. Nothing is straightforward. Most agencies want you to be married and pulling in super big coin. I am a single mum with 13 yr old and 4 yr old boys, making very decent money and I think it would break me financially to adopt one of these children. Why does it have to cost so much?? Why can't they come and do a home study, interview me, check out our lives and just let us adopt the child and start giving them a good life? Too many hoops to jump through unless you have lots of money behind you. China now also requires that you be a two-parent family. It isn't fair that so many of us are able to provide a great life for these kids and can't because we don't have $30,000 to throw at agencies. What a shame. I will keep looking into this though. Just thinking about the kids down there waiting and hoping for a family is motivation enough. xx

  22. RE USEABLE BAGS says – reply to this

    22

The environmental damage caused by plastic bags is enormous. Plastic makes up 80% of the volume of litter on roads, parks, and beaches and makes up 90% of floating litter in the ocean (BEC). In every square mile of ocean there are over 46,000 pieces of plastic. This puts an enormous strain on the environment. The little pieces of plastic act as a sort of sponge for chemicals. They soak up a million fold greater concentration of such deadly compounds as PCBs and DDE (a breakdown product of the notorious insecticide DDT), than the surrounding seawater (Reusablebags.com). Marine life then eats these pieces and dies. It is estimated that over a 100,000 different birds, seals and whales die every year (Reusablebags.com). After the animal dies its carcass decomposes and the plastic is free to roam the ocean and kill again.

Can't help but think… instead of appealing to US, the general reading poor, ;) why don't these charities appeal to the rich bastards who make these children needy in the first place?
ie., The rich governments who don't give a fuck, self-absorbed celebrities who feel they NEED to live in 5 million dollar homes, and the so-called "churches" who don't help a soul unless you give THEM a donation first.
Until PEOPLE change in their hearts, (and greedy guts!) unfortunately, NOTHING will help the poor and downtrodden.
(sigh) Sometimes humanity quite plainly disgusts me. :(

    Re: Gilly
Gilly, you have a good heart to want to home my "kind." What is the reason it costs so much? $30,000 puts lots of people out of the running. I make a decent income and have a savings, and that fee would wipe me out. Then what kind of stress would it cause me to have no savings and a child? And I also think better a single parent adopting a child than the child staying in an orphanage.

  25. Gilly says – reply to this

    25

Just as a side note, why are people making comments about plastic bags? What does that have to do with orphans in Mexico? I totally feel like sending an email to Brangelina (um, yeah I don't actually have an email but you know what I mean!) and asking for their help in adopting one of these kids. They have the funds to do it. After adopting three children themselves, they obviously feel strongly about the issue. If cost is the only thing holding someone back from giving a child a better life, then the system is wrong. What a vicious cycle of governmental bullshit. It's like the unspoken motto is "We need you to pay us "x" amount of $, because we know you want a child and we want your $ and we know you'll do it because you can't stand the thought of leaving a child in those conditions". It's almost like governments are fulfilling quotas or something. Pulling in the people who want to adopt and then milking them dry financially. Arghg. Not fair. ;(

I didn't realize that racism was so rampant against individuals of Mexican descent in the States. I had heard that it was a pretty racist country, but never having been there, I really didn't know. These are children. Who cares where they have come from? I mean, are some of you serious with your "Ewww Mexicans" comments? WTF? Wake up. This is life, not a dress rehearsal for it. Every human being deserves love, regardless of skin colour and whatever other issues and baggage some of you may carry around with you. Unbelievable. I seriously want to get on a plane and wrap these kids up in blankets and give them a hug. And someone wrote "Eww Mexicans". Unbelievable.

Wow! I understand that there are needs everywhere, but there is nothing wrong with Perez posting about suffering children in Baja. If you believe charity begins at home, then go and help those kids. Perez isn't saying not to, he is just pointing out one opportunity to give. I for one would like to help an organization that provides contraceptive education and devices for such populations here and abroad.

Re: Doctor – I am not entirely sure why it costs so much, but here is a basic breakdown. These figures are in CDN dollars.

    In-home study - $2,500 (estimate)
    Application fees - $2,000
Plane fares - $10,000 (travelling back and forth over a possible 12-24 wait period)

I think that when I wrote $30,000, I was looking at the International (China) information. It looks as though it may be significantly less expensive to adopt via Canada to US. I will make inquiries through an agency here in my city and find out what a ballpark figure is. I am willing to bet though that even adopting in Mexico is quite pricey. Flights add up as do other fees.

This is what I found on one website:

Agency and private adoptions can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more depending on a variety of factors including services provided, travel expenses, birthmother expenses, requirements in the state, and other factors. International adoptions can range from $7,000 to $30,000.

    That is insanely high. Wow.

What the kids need are parents with an education and a job….we give their greedy govt. more money to spend on themselves….i don't think so. They need to use the money to put in plumbing and get those poor kids some food….between all of the money adn the mission work, Mexico is so co-dependant on the American society….it is sickening. It is not that I am racist, I am sick of their government and wealthy…hell even their parents, not doing it or even trying to do anything but ask us for help!! CONSTANTLY!!

Thanks Perez………. I've already started rounding up my sisters to go on a mission trip to one of the ophanages. And I will soon gather plenty of donations to take with me. Can't wait!!! P.S. I'll let you know if I bring somebody home with me!

    33

Hey, if it's as easy as taking a "mission trip" (I have no idea what this is), then let me know! I will be very surprised if the orphange let's you waltz out with a child without going through a very stringent screening process, but you never know. If there is some way to bypass all of the red tape that seems to be involved in adopting from Mexico and making it less expensive - then please share the details with me. I would love to know! Thanks and good luck. :)

I'm sure there will be lots of "red tape"! How ever I was just trying to make a postive statement. If my grandparents did it, I'm sure I can too! And I will take that "mission trip" because representing hope to these kids would mean alot to them! P.S. I'm still positive!

I plan on speaking with a local adoption agency to get more clarification on this Mexican adoption stuff. If they don't know, I hope they will point me in the right direction. Those two in the photo are so cute. Like I said before, if I could jump on a plane right now I'd do it. xx Good luck with your mission. xx

  37. sorry but... says – reply to this

    37

Re: smooches – I hope your "hope" isn't to beg for money…but to get an education and learn to live a self sustaining life…like their parents and grandparents are and have apparently failed to teach these orphans…I'll stay in American and put my efforts into our own needy and impoverished people, for the betterment of our society. Maybe one day, they will do the same for their's….We all want to be hero's, just not at the sake of those that need us at home. To go abroad and perform humanitarian missions, in the hopes of being rewarded a child…well that is crazy. Stay home, there is plenty to do here, and visit the orphanages here….sure, you have to get approved…but it will be for the betterment of OUR society!!

Re: Sorry but… Not sure if you are responding to me, but I'm not the one planning a mission to the orphanage and I don't think that person has any plans to "beg" for money either. We were simply discussing how even as successful adults who earn more than the average Joe, we still fall short financially of managing to adopt a child from another country. I do make pretty good money, just perhaps not enough to fund an adoption. :( You are right about one thing. There needs to be more investigation in America as to why priveleged anglo-Americans have so many children sitting in the system waiting for families to adopt them. America is supposed to be one of the foremost leading economical powers in the world yet look at the stats concerning children who are waiting to be adopted there. I agree with you that more needs to be done "at home". It is shocking to see that children fall through the cracks in what is deemed to be one of the most "envied" societies in the world. I also agree that a mission may not be the best plan of action, but perhaps seeing the orphans firsthand will give better insight to the situation.

    41

Sorry for yakking again. This post has really made me realize how lucky we all are (I'm in Canada & I assume you are in U.S.) that we weren't born in a third-world country. We are in a position of privelege and as such should try to help others who aren't.

There are so many more opportunities depending on where you are born. These children would have so many doors open to them if they weren't in Mexico. I hope that Mexico catches up to Canada & the U.S. in terms of taking care of its citizens and figuring out their economy & such, but until that happens, these children need outside help. xx

    Re: Gilly
Gilly — I like your comments re: adoption — but yes, the truth is it is next to impossible to adopt these children. I have made monthly trips to an orphanage there through CDV for the past four years. That's how close these children are to us. For more information check out my sister website project for the facts about these children. www.projectcasadevida.org Again, thanks for your thoughtful comments.

    44

How frustrating that it is so difficult to adopt these kids. Lots of adoptions up here in Canada are "open adoptions", which means that they keep some kind of contact with their birth parents. I think that is encouraged a lot these days, not like the adoption scenarios of yesteryear, when they had no contact, no information and had issues when they were older (some of them). Maybe if the Mexican government thought that the parents would keep contact they would make it easier. I don't know. Just thinking out loud I guess!

I would love to pursue this further and I hope others who have written here today do as well! I will go home and hug my boys extra hard tonight and be thankful for what we have and not worry so much about what we don't have. :)

I sent Corazon de Vida an email and this is what they said about adoption:

Mexican law does not make it easy to adopt out these beautiful children, which unfortunately is one of the reasons there are over 50 orphanages in the Baja area alone.

Here are a few things that the Mexican government require:
Mexican Nationalists are given first preference
Parental rights must be signed over by the nearest relative if there are no parents and it is very difficult to get them to do this.
You must adopt ALL siblings in a family and generally there are between 3 & 6.

Corazon de Vida does not participate in the adoption process of the children. Our mission is to provide these children with the basic necessities (food, shelter, clean water) so that they can focus on education and just being kids!

This link describes the adoption process: http://travel.state.gov/family/adoption/country/country_419.html
Like someone said above… expensive and very difficult!

On a side note - what difference does it make where this is happening?! Kids are kids!

As a Southern California resident, I have been to this orphanage and have been involved in this particular organization. Hilda, the woman that started it, was actually raised in this orphanage and is literally giving back. She is a saint! The children there are well-cared for, happy, and healthy - thanks to donations and axctive participation of the organization's supporters. Regarding adoption…most of the parents still have rights, and visit their children there. They just financially and/or physically cannot raise their child. It's very sad. If you live in SoCal, make the trip to Mexico. It's not far from the border, and will take a full day. It's amazing!

Good work Perez! I've been on these trips and they're wonderful. These are cool, raw kids who just want some attention. Mexico doesn't have much of a system for them so they rely on organizations like CDV to feed them through sponsors who give donations. Plenty of us go to Mexico to party so think of it as an opportunity to give back to the kids - payback for puke you left in their country.
Also, a little attention and help with homework may help them break the cycle.. which means they might have a future in their country.
Really cool people on the trips too!
