Their beliefs, based on their religion, Islam, states that homosexuality is a crime. However, it is not only homosexuals who are maltreated. What about the way women are treated in many middle-eastern and African countries? These countries force their citizens to live by a strict code behaviour, and anyone who steps outside of that code faces severe consequences. In Afghanistan, little girls as young as 7 are sold as wives to pay family debts. To us, it all seems unbelievably barbaric and unthinkable, but it happens because it what they are brought up to believe, and because of the fear of not conforming. One can only feel for the injustice these men are suffering, as we do for all those whose human rights are taken away. But in these countries, the concept of equal human rights for all does not exist - it is a western concept. I doubt whether Perez is going to have much effect on the Egyptian government. The way is through the United Nations, Amnesty International, government pressure and diplomacy, etc.
