Yes, it is wrong to us in our so-called enlightened western societies, but here you are looking at another culture. Their beliefs, based on their religion, Islam, states that homosexuality is a crime. However, it is not only homosexuals who are maltreated. What about the way women are treated in many middle-eastern and African countries? These countries force their citizens to live by a strict code behaviour, and anyone who steps outside of that code faces severe consequences. In Afghanistan, little girls as young as 7 are sold as wives to pay family debts. To us, it all seems unbelievably barbaric and unthinkable, but it happens because it what they are brought up to believe, and because of the fear of not conforming. One can only feel for the injustice these men are suffering, as we do for all those whose human rights are taken away. But in these countries, the concept of equal human rights for all does not exist - it is a western concept. I doubt whether Perez is going to have much effect on the Egyptian government. The way is through the United Nations, Amnesty International, government pressure and diplomacy, etc.

I think this is a great idea. If we started treating homosexuality as wrong and unnatural as it really is and making it punishable, or at the very least make practicing homosexuals go to an instituation, then maybe there would be a lot less people who had disease. Hey Perez, I love and support you and as an out gay man I support gay rights as well, but you have to take an event like this within the context of the location in which it is happening. I really think on this one you are taking an ethnocentric approach to the matter. Not saying that it is right or that it is just but Egypt IS NOT A WESTERN COUNTRY. Egypt has a government where church and state are not entirely separate. That said, the Qur'an strictly forbids homosexuality in much less debatable terms than the Bible. So again I am not for the persecution of gay men anywhere, but take it for what it is, and try and change the problems here in America before you try to spout of to a culture you don't know that much about. Having been to Egypt many times, there is something to be said for the fact that they are one of the most progressive Middle Eastern countries as far as queer visibility is concerned. Others being places like Turkey and Israel. Egypt recently allowed confidential HIV testing, and legally recognizes the existence of homosexuality. Not saying that they are right with their current actions, but that progress in such a country has to be fostered and commended.

I just want to point out a couple of things..First of all you cant compare Egypt to Europe/USA. The US and Europe has come along way in the last 50 years. i.e. When it comes to rasicm and discrimenation, equal rights etc.. This is a result of us becoming industrial and rich countries. It is offcourse understandable that in poorer countries these benefits take the backseat to all the other problems lined up..
I find it heartbreaking an unfair that this is happening, but we in the western world have also done similar things 50 years ago.
I also want to point out that in my country..(Norway) homosexuals are allowed to get married and to adopt children.
So in that respect the US is behind us when it comes to equal rights..
And I gather many Americans might say that they have all the equal rights they need.. Just like allot of Egyptians say that the are happy with the way things are in their country..
People dont change their believes over night unfortunatly…Hopefully in a couple hundred years people will read about the crazy people in the old days, who discriminated others for all sorts of petty things. And they will shake their heads at our ignorance..
I suggest we all support Amnesty International, they do a great job bringing light to these issues.
