Well, it's not President Bush's fault. It's either that, or pay more taxes. Take your pick.
The president is not the one controlling oil prices. No doubt that he isnt exactly outright opposing them (which would do nothing to the oil price). But it is simple economics that the higher demand due to the newly industrialized china is what causes the price to go up. the more people want it and wont complain about paying for it the higher the gas companies can charge (hence record profits). This is global not just here in the U.S. as well as it is the market determining the gas price.
You know what's worse?
Here in Victoria, BC, Canada, gas prices are at $1.20 per litre and up. When you consider there are about 4 litres in a gallon, that means we're paying about $4.80 per gallon. So… Let's just say I bus it to work. Save the environment, right?

The President doesn't decide how much oil costs, its determined by the amount of resources that are available. If there is less to go around than usual, then the price will be higher and vice versa. Its decided by the oil companies and has nothing to do with the President, or any other country's leader for that matter.

I'm an economics teacher, and I always have to reiterate to the kids that our President has absolutely no control over oil prices. OPEC sets the cost for a barrel of oil. They have been raising their prices, they claim, due to the US dollar going down in value, which is covering all their investments in the US market. So as much as I'd love to blame this horrible President, it is simply something he has no control over.

In fact the corporation I work for, which is widely known on the east coast - its not a rinky dink newbie, actually LOSES money in the gas station group. We lose about $0.02/dekatherm. It is not the President telling everyone to make the prices higher, its where the gas is purchased - they rip us off - and local competition.
