Bad News For American Idol

Filed under: TV News > American Idol

idol1.jpg

Fox's Idol Gives Back show was the highest rated program on Wednesday. However, it received lower ratings this year than it did during its debut last year.

Much lower!

Producers even had A-List performances lined up, such as Mariah Carey, Rihanna and Fergie. But, not even that, nor Brad Pitt's appearance helped with the ratings.

The show went down 34% among adult viewers in ages 18-49.

Last year's show was marked as a regular show in which contestants would be eliminated at the end, but they were surprised when elimination was moved for the next night. This year's show was marked as a "special" with no elimination involved.

Maybe that had something to do with it?

And, the promised appearances by the presidential candidates were not included. It will be aired tonight instead.

The benefit show yesterday helped to raise at least $22 million, according to Billboard. Fox is stating that this year's donations will be higher than that amount and will release the final number later tonight.

Has Idol lost it's touch?

They did the same thing last year - no eliminations. It might have to do with overall ratings being down, the big hockey game last night or the nice weather on the East Coast. Who knows?

It was a great show because the children of the world need our help, isn't that more important than ratings? Having said - it was looong. Annie Lenox was amazing.

The show sucks, it has totally lost it's appeal. They will be lucky to last another 2 years. I cannot believe billy Ray and Miley went to that dump in the mountains, with no gifts or food or a extreme home makeover. Come on now that would have been a show. Come on Miley share the wealth with that poor family.

    40

Yeah, it didn't help that all of the storms in the midwest and southern part of the US didn't get to watch much of it. There were 7 tornado warnings at one time in northeastern and eastern OK alone. Their ratings would have been higher if the storms weren't rolling thru 3 to 4 states at that time! So don't go hating on Idol Gives Back.

I'm just soooo tired of everyone asking for money! Most of us give already to worthy causes. I've adopted a 5 year old from Africa through world vision, several homeless at the shelter in the town I live, I give at Church, to ACS, on and on. I love AI but I could not watch. I'm tapped dry.

The Idol Gives Back show seems exploitative to me. I'd be happy to simply give to the charity, without all the "milking" they do with these innocent kids. It seems a little bit distasteful to watch.

I'll tell ya straight up what it is….no one wants to come home after busting their ass all day for pennies and then get bombarded by a tv show with a bunch of celebrities asking for money. Hacks me off……wanna donate to me? feel free. I am a starving scientist who has been in school far to long, works 14h days and gets paid lower than bus drivers.

  46. Has Idol Lost it's touch? says – reply to this
    46

    NO…
Many American's I'm sure didn't watch, because they are not in the position to help. Watching the pain in the world makes you feel bad enough, but when you are not in the position to help, it's worse….
I will be shocked if the donations didn't drop from last year.

things are depressing enough, so i don't think that people want to watch a 2hr special about all the needy in the world.with the economy the way it is, no one can afford to give…..also i have issues with celebrities asking us regular folk for money.just think, if every celebrity was willing to give atleast a million of their own money for charity, things would be alot different.

can you even remember all the winners? And look how far they have come… Remember teddy bear Ruebon? he was good, and then made a christmas cd and then nothing.

The show was AMAZING- Annie Lennox Rocks- The cause was wonderful and the celebs that appeared were excellent. Simon as well as Paula, Randy and Ryan did a terrific job as well- Sorry to hear the ratings were not as good as last year- There are a lot of good people in the world- You never know when you may be in one of those peoples place- Thanks for posting Perez- Good luck to you as well- There are some really mean posts by people on this site, and not sure why…it's a shame. I don't care if Jesus was on Idol gives back. I don't want to watch it. It seems they use the show to pander to people to give their money for THEIR cause. And I'm still not sure what that is. Let Fox give the huge amounts of money it makes to these causes. I already give to my own cuases, which are local and I can see the results. I watch idol for the entertainment, and to see Simon tell these coddled kids how much they suck.

That show is done and needs to retire gracefully. I rarely watch it because the banter between the 3 judges has grown tiresome and too obvious. The format of the show is stale. 7 years is enough.

    67

Even after a four-year absence and a courageous battle against cancer, Kylie Minogue's appetite for pop perfection remains undimmed. Indeed, her 10th studio album X is stuffed with pointers as to why she's one of the few pure pop artists to sustain a career into a third decade without ever pulling a Britney. The hip producers (Calvin Harris, Bloodshy & Avant) and heavy-hitting songwriters (Guy Chambers, Cathy Dennis) are all present and correct, but they never overshadow Minogue's perky/ saucy pop/dance formula. You'll search in vain for insight into her recent personal traumas, but there's still plenty of heart and soul and, in the shape of "Sensitized," "In My Arms," "The One" and UK lead single "Two Hearts," her best batch of tunes in a while. A truly welcome return.— ALL I SEE is released in US NOW!!!

I think American Idol Gives Back is awesome. It's sad, however, that our life has come to this where the Government can't take care of their own; but proves again that WE DO TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER. That being said….I switched back and forth only because it breaks my heart and due to the current economic condition I can't possibly give as I did last year. I believe it's the economy and not American Idol losing their clout. As little or as much as they make THEY DO MAKE A MIGHTY DIFFERENCE!!!!

The show did suck last night and it was way too long. But Idol is still number 1 for a reason. But ultimately all good things must come to an end and soon Idol will be done with. But while it lasted, it has been a great ride.

This will sound callous and horrible but in all honesty, I watch AI for the singing and the drama of the competition. If I wanted to watch a show about starving kids, I would. I already contribute a sizable chunk of my income to various charities because I've been blessed and feel it's the right thing to do. I don't need a show to remind me to give back. To use Simon's terminology, the whole show seems "self indulgent". Why don't the celebs give a million or so of their money so I don't have to hear them yap and put AI back on so I can see who got eliminated.

  74. San Diego says – reply to this
    74

We ended up shutting it off. It's one thing to have a charity show. It's another when the entire show is asking just one celeb after another asking for donations. The segments left me feeling depressed. So, even though we donated….I was done. I at least wanted SOME entertainment. And Terri Hatcher didn't qualify.

It may have something to do with the fact that people are afraid, very afraid, about the coming depression. Almost everyone I know has had a layoff in their family, or is a month behind in mortgage, or thinking about selling that second car. It's the economy. VOTE HILLARY!
