Could Obama Be Hurting Oprah?

Oprah Winfrey has the touch of gold it seems, but could her helping others affect her in the end?
In a 1999 survey consisting of the most admired and well-respected women of the 20th century, Oprah came in second to Mother Teresa. Another recent poll showed that people thought Oprah was a more powerful woman than presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
With as much popularity and mass appeal that she has (don't forget her book of the month), Oprah has never publicly endorsed a Presidential candidate….until now.
Last year, she made it public on the Larry King show and stated "I think that my value to [Obama], my support of him, is probably worth more than any check.”
A lot of attention has been focused on Oprah and her support of Obama. She's appeared in South Carolina, Iowa, and New Hampshire at Obama rallies. Though what type of effect has Obama had on Winfrey?
New reports show that by last August, a CBS poll found that Oprah's favorable ratings had dropped from 74% to 61%. Then, just 10 days after the campaign media explosion, Oprah's ratings dropped down to 55%, and her unfavorable ratings climbed up to 1 in 3 for the first time.
Then, in December, a poll of Democrats by the ABC/Washington Post found that up to 10% of those surveyed were turned away from Obama by her endorsement. And, to make matters even worse, another popularity survey, which we mentioned last month, showed that 46% of Americans would choose Ellen DeGeneres over Oprah as their favorite TV host.
If this reasoning holds solid…..
Then hopefully this will mean people will like Heidi Montag even less and we will hopefully be writing about her and Spencehole less too.

I was disappointed that she endorsed a candidate. I think she is too powerful and her endorsement hurt Hillary quite a bit. She's supposed to be all about strong women. It's not that I'm opposed to her supporting Obama–I just wish she'd kept it to herself.
Honestly who cares who celerities vote for or what they do or believe off the screen? That is not why I watch their tv shows, see their movies, or buy their music. Oprah and Ellen, great people, but who cares. I don't watch Oprah because of who she is going to vote for, I not going to vote for Obama, and I still like Oprah just as much as I did before she announced that. Its hard when any celebrity endorses a political candidate, because the candidates controversies then become their own…I dont think that this reflects poorly on oprah in any way but instead shows her resilience as a public figure that she can come out and endorse a candidate and it not be completely detrimental to their stance as a public figure. I loved Oprah… but I am such a HUGE HILLARY CLINTON supporter that I stopped watching after she came out for OBAMA… It felt almost as though she was a BUSH supporter… although I am starting to like OBAMA a lot now!

Maybe it's the fact that she's been on for 19 years (or whatever it is), and Ellen is just more relevant today. Upwards of 10% being surveyed being turned off is not that much. Stick to celebrities, not politics - you lose every time.
Oprah lunged for Obama only because he's black. She didn't bother doing any research on his shady past or racist affiliations. Now, she wants to separate herself from him and wants us to forget she ever endorsed him. As a high profile celebrity, she is supposed to be much more responsible. This was far more than just a mistake on her part. It has hurt her credibility a lot.
Well, even Ellen Degeneres, a Hillary supporter, was balanced enough to bring Obama onto her show as well. Oprah's transparent disregard for her female viewers was a pretty big blow to Hillary, and could very easily be responsible for Obama's unfortunate success thus far. I think Hillary can overcome it though - if not, our country is in trouble!

I've always suspected a few things about this woman, and her support of Obama has pushed it to the forefront of my mind.
Considering the "scandal" about Obama's reverend - who is apparently anti-gay, and possibly rascist as well - Obama has never appealed to me, as I am a lesbian. (And damn proud of it.) I stand firmly in my belief of human equality, regardless of race, age, or sex.
Personally, I've harboured suspicion that Oprah struggles with these issues as well, and "hides" behind her secret struggle by attempting to win over the African American's & Women's votes in support of Obama.
Clearly, Obama has some interesting and likeable views on the war in Iraq, but I think he is much too inexperienced to deal with these issues on the global level.
And if Oprah is supporting a man rumoured to have anti-gay/lesbian associations, then SHE no longer has my respect, nor my "vote," either.

I think Oprah's recent raving endorsement of Eckhart Tolle's book "A New Awakening" has something to do with this downfall in her adoration. It's very New Age and the guy looks like a troll. Scary.

Yes ,I have noticed that Oprah has had problems when she tries to force her views on to people, mainly because many of us remember her judgement is lacking at best. She had never come out before to back a candidate, but the second a black man enters the race , there goes Oprah. She never backed any candidate prior who had strong views to help women or starving children, but soon as a black man enters the race, she dumped us. I used to watch Oprah, but now I feel sold out by her. She will only care if you are black, she's turned her back on the poor, those poor who are white anyway. She must not of been listening to her guest or her fans. Oprah to me is now racist AND sexist!! Why do you think she is backing one now??
When Oprah started going political, I stopped watching. Apparently, I wasn't the only one to do so. Celebrities and politics don't mix too well with the American public. Oprah should have kept to women's issues because those are what her viewers are interested in. What really burned up a lot of viewers was the fact that she is supposedly for women and has made her fortune and built her vast empire on women's issues but failed to even give Mrs. Clinton, the first viable female candidate who had a shot to become president, a chance to appear on her show.

I used to read Oprah's magazine. I work, so I'm not around to watch her show, although it never really appealed to me. That said, I've stopped buying the magazine (and I'm Canadian, so I have no power in your election issues whatsoever!). Oprah has begun to take herself wayyyy too seriously, as though she thinks she can just tell her viewers/readers what to do/think and they'll jump. Obama was the final straw — she never spoke of issues, just "he's a great guy, I like him, vote for him." It didn't encourage debate, it was simply her being patronizing to her viewership. Turned me off, and I'm done with her magazine now.
