Cynthia's Breast Cancer Confession

Kudos to her for opening up about this…and hopefully helping other women in the process!
Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon, who's currently 42, has revealed that she was diagnosed two years ago with breast cancer.
On Tuesday, Nixon spoke about her diagnosis with the disease on Good Morning America.
She said, "I didn't really want to make it public while I was going through it. I didn't want paparazzi at the hospital, that kind of thing."
Nixon's mother battled breast cancer when Nixon was 12 years old. Her grandmother also battled with breast cancer.
"I always sort of thought, 'I'm probably going to get breast cancer. There's a really good chance.'" Nixon said. "I go for my completely routine mammogram and then I get a call from my gynecologist. And she says, 'Well, I have some — it's not such great news, but here it is, but it's very small and we're just going to get in there and take it right out, right away, and then you'll probably have radiation."
Nixon's mentioned that her girlfriend of four years, activist Christine Marinoni, was also frightened. "My girlfriend was very scared. She was the one doing the eating. She was in a panic. She was just trying to calm herself down any way she could. And, actually, we made a big point of talking to my kids about it.
Nixon broke the news to her children first before going public, saying "I talked to them together and, basically, I told them, 'You know, they found some breast cancer in my right breast. It's very small. It's very early. I'm going to have an operation. They're going to take it out, and then we're going to have six-and-a-half weeks of radiation every weekday, and this is like what Grandma went through and I'm going to be fine."
Nixon will now become the official spokeswoman for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation for the next year.
Nixon says, "I want them [women] most to hear me saying that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. So the only thing to really be afraid of is if you don't go get your mammograms, because there's some part of you that doesn't want to know, and that's the thing that's going to trip you up. That's the thing that could have a really bad endgame."

Get checked! I am 30 and had a concern about a lump. I was more terrified of the actual exam at first. Let me tell you, it does not hurt, and thankfully I checked out ok. Please get your check ups and go regularly. The worst part is not knowing.

Love you Cynthia, thanks for speaking out on this very important issue. Breast Caner is nearly 100% curable if caught in the early stages. Get mammograms ladies (there are many free ones, if you don't have insurance) and do your breast exams monthly (or do as I do, have someone else do it - smiles)

thank god for a giving generous celebrity like ms. nixon to open up about her battle. i am inspired when celebrities share their lives because otherwise, how else would we ordinary people know what to do.

Both my mother and grandmother are survivors of Breast Cancer and while neither of their lumps were discovered via mammogram, it is still VERY important that women get their mammograms, as well as perform self-checks. I cannot emphasize this enough. Mammograms are not as much of a hassle as they are said to be, so young women, actually, all women, keep getting one as often as is needed. There are programs to sponsor a mammogram if you are unable to afford one. Cynthia Nixon is right, don't be afraid!
I have Aids. Breast cancer is nothing. I will shit on your desk for thinking you are special.

Get the mammogram! The most painful thing about it is letting another woman see and touch your boobs. For Pete's sake - if you have regular annual check-ups, you've been felt up by your physician. The procedure only takes a few minutes, is not painful, and SAVES LIVES.

Try Thermography, not mammography. Catches cancer earlier, and you can get your whole body checked out at once. No radiation. No biopsy.
Hey, I really am a Nixon too…I always thought it was cool when she became famous..ya know to take away from the "other" Nixon…that said..I also thought I would always get b-cancer..like so many women out their fear since other family memebers have had it. I do get my mam's checked yearly, but from what I hear..it's tougher when your are on the "DD" side, which I am. Can't we get a better way to do it without the vice grip involved?? Really, you can CAT scan a body, but you can't figure out a better way to diagnose breast cancer without putting your boobs in a vice grip?? And, gents, don't think it can't happen to you…a friend of mine, a big, hockey playing barrel chested guy had to have a masectemy..so why can't we just figure out a better way to diagnose this??

Re: Mrs. Nixon – Just google Thermography and go to a site. I had one done two years ago. I was told I had eye cancer three and a half years ago. I swear the doctor was so excited. Three second opinions later, I DIDN'T have eye cancer. So I started really looking into this stuff. Thermography is NOT covered, but just a few hundred dollars. No vice grip. Some say Mammography and biopsies get cancer to grow. Scary stuff out there.

My mother had breast cancer 5 years ago and beat it, but it came back and has spread to her liver… and they only caught it after it spread and now she has weeks to live and we only got the diagnosis 1 month ago…. so EVERYONE, not just the ladies… make sure you and your doctor stay on top of all of the latest ways to diagnosis and treat this AWFUL disease EARLY!!!! I am so glad Cynthia is doing well, I just wish my mother had the same outcome. My mother is only 58 and this is the 5th time she has battled cancer in her lifetime. PLEASE SUPPORT ALL OF THE CANCER CAUSES OUT THERE, NOT JUST THE CANCER D'JOUR. WE NEED HELP CURING ALL CANCERS!!!!!

i donated $1000 to susan g komen for the cure last year because it saddens me so much to see people so undeserving go through such a horrible process. cynthia nixen is a hero in her own right and i am so thrilled that she fought through this deadly disease. i'm 17 years old, and people like her can really inspire and touch girls my age.
