Divalicious Barbra Streisand has donated $5 million to LA's Cedars-Sinai Medical for a women's heart education and research program.

Did you know that according to the National Heart Lung and Blook Institute heart disease is the #1 killer of American women?
Babs' gift will create permanent funding for the Barbra Streisand Women's Cardiovascular Research and Education at Cedars-Sinai, and the hospital said it would expand research efforts there.
Says Streisand, "Women need to be educated about female cardiovascular disease and the medical community must be propelled toward change. Just like with breast cancer the impetus must come from women themselves striving to become empowered to reduce their risks for heart disease."
Nice to see celebs put their money where their mouth is. And Barbra has a BIG mouth!

does anybody agree that donating to female specific health research, when there is a male equivalent, is a little sexist? i generally think of this issue in regard to breast cancer and the pink ribbons. men get it too. don't get me wrong though: its better than not donating at all.

The number one reason women die is that same as why men die–heart disease because of diet. Going vegan or even vegetarian dramatically cuts your chance of stroke, heart attack, and cancer, among other things. And it doesn't cost anything and will actually save you money and reduce health care spending. Maybe Babs should spend the money promoting proper eating habits.

I used to work at Beth Israel in Boston in the 80s. We wrote a magazine in those days and one centered on heart disease. I asked why all the articles in it were about men's heart disease. The answer will startle you. UP UNTIL THAT TIME THERE WAS NO RESEARCH ON WOMEN'S HEART DISEASE! The famous Framingham heart study was ALL MALE. They did not even THINK of having women in it. That was only 25 years ago - back when a lump on the breast was an automatic mascectomy with no testing done to determine if it were cancerous. Just a little info from an old lady.
