- "Most of the conversations start with one or another of the girls asking Lauren what she did the night before, and, constant as the questions are, they seem to be asked not out of curiosity but out of obligation, as if the girls were being paid to ask—as, indeed, they are."
- "As for Lauren, she is smart enough to get as much gold as she can out of “The Hills” before it’s too late, and has started a fashion line, for which she has received, naturally, an undue amount of press attention, even though the clothes are sub-Old Navy in design."

This is ridiculous. It's a show that is just fun to watch. Why does it have to be analyzed? People are addicted to the hills because it is a fantasy world. Nobody seems to care if it is real or fake. Kudos to L.C for cashing in on this prime opportunity because obviously everyone is glued to their tube on monday nights and the ratings prove it.

I AGREE! I'm a teenager, and when I watch this show, I can't believe how boring it is. I would kill myself if my life consisted of horribly boring conversations like they have on The Hills.
I completely and wholly agree with everything the New Yorker is saying. But you have to remember that any youth show is often targeted towards people even younger than those watching. Any of us 20 somethings watching know it's complete crap– but teenagers, though not dumb by any means, are satisfied by it. The New Yorker writing a piece on this show is no different than if it were to write a piece on Zoey 101 or some other kid show: It just doesn't work.

the new yorker is fighting hard to stay relevant…to whichever demographic will have them! 20 yrs ago, they wouldn't have dipped into the Hills cesspool (had MTV carried this trashy excuse for a show then). but then again american culture has always been tres lowbrow. maybe they've finally decided to embrace it…
anything on t.v. is advertising though. product placement. commercials starting mini series. it's ridiculous but thats what's up.
as for the hills. i like the show. for me it's just watching what people do in a situation where they have such opportunities. using the limelight to build a business or whatever. i don't agree with most of it, and it is fake, but human nature is fascinating. lol.

no one on that "show" is even capable of uttering more than 3 word sentences. the conversations are completely inane. if you listened to the audio in its entirety you would have maybe 6 minutes of mindless talk that a five year old could say. embarrassing adult conversation. the whole show sonsists of maybe 15 sentences padded with endless context location shots and reaction shots, glares and stares. Has anyone else ever noticed how saggy her boobs are? That really annoys the heck out of me for some reason. I used to really like the show, but now I feel like they are a little too full of themselves. It makes me want to vomit in my mouth a little bit.
I don't know who wrote this article but these girls DO NOT represent what it is to be a young person in L.A. I understand there are a lot of stereotypes about the city ( & girls like Paris only fuel the stereotypes) but L.A. is filled with hardworking people not just socialites. There are lower class and middle class families & blue collar workers who make an honest living and DIVERSITY. There are few places like L.A. where you can find all sorts of races & ethnicities. The girls on this "reality show" are NOT even from L.A. they're from Orange County.

It isn't like the New Yorker stooped to a lower level in writing a short article about the Hills. If you read the magazine you would see that it is in the TV review section it is not like they covered the show in a feature article. The New Yorker is one of the best researched and well written magazines in the Country.

Whatever I love the Hills!!!!!!! I have been watching LC since she was on Laguna Beach… She is sooooo interesting, beautiful, and stylish… who wouldnt want to watch that, they are just hating b/c they don't have their own show Team Lauren!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't really think of too many people that are from LA. Nobody is from there…people just flock there. And who cares if the show is trash. People will still continue to watch it. If they want to watch something serious or inspiring, they watch Oprah.
Perez seems to watch the show himself since he always seems to know what's happening on the show. Hell, he probably watches it even more than the average person since he points out each and every editing blunder.

Lauren and all the people on the hills are so boring and monotone, they have no life in their eyes, I guess that is from their being jaded and being too cool, they sit there and just stare at eachother after what is supposed to be a dramatic moment. They don't look like they are having any fun. I never watch anymore.
Hell yeah I watch this show because it is like a fantasy. Some of them (Spencer & Brody) don't have jobs and live in niciest cribs,drive the sickest cars. I am not mad at them either. If my parents were set like theirs, I would sit on my ass and collect my weekly allowance too.
and the other reason I watch is because of Brody. He may be a dog in the worst way, but GOTTDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMN he's fine. Love watching the chemistry between him and Lauren….
