Abortion Girl's phone number was disconnected and she did not respond to e-mails or a knock knock on the door at the address listed for her in the campus directory in New Haven.
She's probably gonna be in hiding for a while!
Her parents must be SO proud.
Yale University released the following statement about their crafty student, who lied to the school paper, whose article sparked this whole controversy.
Ms. Shvarts is engaged in performance art. Her art project includes visual representations, a press release and other narrative materials. She stated to three senior Yale University officials today, including two deans, that she did not impregnate herself and that she did not induce any miscarriages. The entire project is an art piece, a creative fiction designed to draw attention to the ambiguity surrounding form and function of a woman's body.
She is an artist and has the right to express herself through performance art.
Had these acts been real, they would have violated basic ethical standards and raised serious mental and physical health concerns.
Groups both for and against abortion rights actually agreed on something—that Shavarts' project was outrageous and completely out of line.
Ted Miller, a spokesman for NARAL Pro-Choice America, called the concept offensive and "not a constructive addition to the debate over reproductive rights."
Peter Wolfgang, executive director of the Family Institute of Connecticut, an anti-abortion group, said his anger was not mitigated by the fact that Shvarts was never pregnant.
"I'm astounded by this woman's callousness," he said. "There are thousands of women in this country who are dealing with the pain of having had an abortion, with the trauma of having suffered a miscarriage. For her to make light of that for her own purposes is just beyond words."
At the end of the day, Abortion Girl accomplished her mission: she got people talking.

I live in New Haven, and in the New Haven Register this morning, there is a front page article stating that this was indeed a hoax. She is doing an art project, a performance art piece, about women and society and whatnot, but she didn't in any way inseminate herself and then induce miscarriages. So it's not as extreme as it sounded at first, but at least she got people talking about her project…

I think when you're young and in art school, you want to do something BIG, that matters and can influence people. I just don't think she realized the severity of the subject matter she was dealing with.
I can't believe how people are being so stupid over this story. She didn't actually do it. She KNEW it's an absurd idea to have 9 miscarriages in 9 months. She KNEW people would react in this way. This was not a Hoax…..She started to get negative feedback, and because students in college today are so coddled and allowed to spout off any stupid thing without getting told that their comment was stupid, she couldn't handle the fact that people were making fun of her. Again, the self esteem of students is so protected even over intellectual merit that at the first sign of an attack on her project she is now lying and saying it was a Hoax.

People will talk about anything that is weird, sensationalized, or violent; however, that does not make the person who started the "conversation" an artist. I think that a number of contempory art students have mistaken "shock" for intellectual engagement. I didn't hear any productive discussions about female bodies or reproductive rights. All I heard was the type of shock that people experience when someone vomits on the subway. It's shocking — those standing by talk about it; however, the discourse is hardly productive.

Her aim was to deconstruct and dismantle current dominant ways of thinking around the female body. People are killed everyday across seas and in our own countries without consent. Put things in perspective, thats what she wanted you to do. People need to put themselves in a perspective that is outside their everyday cultute and discourses, how women's reproductive roles and gender and bodies are viewed is representative of exploitation, she tried to convey the message of the exploitation of a non consenting unborn child, and what the societal reaction would be. It is ironic when you put her attempt in context with all else that is "evil" and manipulative and deadly in the world.

I was an art student, and have done some study of conceptual art, and i do recognize freedom of speech, but as was said above this was "not a constructive addition to the debate over reproductive rights". Couldn't she figure out some other way to explore this issue? If you go to Yale, I would think you'd have other ideas as to how to explore this in a less offensive way. It just has no ring of art to it.

Abortion IS NOT something that should be taken lightly and this stunt (or whatever you want to call it) got YOU to think about an issue you otherwise wouldn't. It pretty much got every pro-choice person out there to question their beliefs. I know that it has made me take a much harder look at the issue and realize that abortion is pretty much and should pretty much be a LAST RESORT option, ie: rape victims, etc. If you're willingly having sex, you know that there is a possibility of getting pregnant and you should be mature enough to deal with that reality. Running off and getting an abortion should not even come into play for people like this. Abortions in North America has gotten out of control, and it's about time something was done to make people think!!!!!!

The project is insensitive, foul, and fails to contribute anything intelligent to the abortion conversation.
