Father Kills Son in Hunting Accident After Mistaking Him for Turkey

BELLE PLAINE, Minn. — The Sibley County Sheriff says that a man who accidentally shot and killed his 9-year-old son while they were hunting apparently mistook the boy for a turkey.

Sheriff Bruce Ponath says that Anthony Klaseus of Belle Plaine and his son Hunter were hunting turkey about three miles west of Belle Plaine around 6:30 p.m. Saturday when Klaseus shot his son in the chest with a 12 gauge shotgun.

Klaseus dialed 911 on his cell phone. Emergency responders pronounced the boy dead at the scene.

"He was absolutely panicked. That would be an understatement," Ponath said. "Very distraught."

Ponath said the shooting was an accident but that his department is continuing to investigate the circumstances.

Apparently, none of you people have gone hunting before. My cousin took his first trip last week - he's four. He cant shoot, obviously, but he's out there. And really, since the 9 year old was probably not taller than the grass they were hunting in, he probably just wandered a little bit and the dad got trigger happy when he saw the movement.

Obviously, its a REALLY SAD thing to happen - but know what you're talking about before you go and talk crap about the dad - who is probably feeling like a royal piece of shit right now anyway.

This is actually a sad story that is heart breaking. The dad ask his son to stay back because he saw a turkey.The dad went to check it out while the little boy stayed back athen the little boy snuck up behind his dad and his dad reacted thinking it was a turkey. So this was absolutly a tragic accident and we should pray for the family. Same on you perez for exploting it.

Putting my own opinions on the cruelty of hunting aside - I still have many questions.

1) Who takes a 9 year old hunting?
2) Who calls said child Hunter?!?!?
3) Why didn't the father make sure his 9 year old son was glued to his side during this hunting expedition?
4) Who mistakes a 9 year old for a Turkey?
5) Isn't a 12 gauge shot gun a bit of an over kill for a Turkey?

The most important of these being the 3rd. Why would you fire a shotgun without knowing where your child is?!?!?! I do think the laws on fire arms in the USA need to be reviewed after this. Rest in peace.

Well the dad apparantly told the boy to stay put and he did not, and wandered off into the area where the turkeys were close to. They were all wearing camoflouge. It was an accident. Poor dad is probably going to end up shooting himself. Anyone who has ever been hunting knows you shoot at anything that moves. Especially when you're wearing camo it's very dangerous.
