Veg Out!

Filed under: Anglophilia > Politik > Paul McCartney

macca.jpg

Keeping on Linda's memory!

Longtime vegetarian and veg advocate Paul McCartney, wants you to go vegetarian to help fight global warming. Really!

"I would urge everyone to think about taking this simple step to help our precious environment and save it for the children of the future," says the legendary Beatle.

According to a 2006 United Nations report, cattle-rearing generated more greenhouse gases than transportation.

Who knew?!

Macca's surprised that a call for vegetarianism hasn't been actively promoted by friends of the earth. "It's very surprising that most major environmental organizations are leaving the option of going vegetarian off their lists of top ways to curtail global warming," he says.

That's one option. Another is to raise cattle in a more eco-friendly way.

Let's work on that!

You can't raise cattle in an eco-friendly way!!! Not only is factory farming the #1 source of greenhouse gas emissions but it is the #1 source of water pollution in the US. Think about it….all that animal waste has to go somewhere! Not only that but it takes so much more grain to be grown to feed these animals that could be going to feed hungry people around the world…

    Perez,
It is not just the meat producing factories that release greenhouse gasses it is the cattle themselves. Cows release gas as part of their digestive process and that is a green house gas. The factory "farms" has so many cattle that it is making an impact on the environment.

    32

    Perez,
Sorry to disappoint, but there isn't really an eco-friendly way to raise cattle. There are some eco-friendly ideas that can be implemented into farming, but raising cattle is very hard on the earth.

If I could recommend some reading for you; "Diet for a Small Planet." This book gives all the facts about how much energy is used to make just one pound of beef. We could feed so many more people if we all ate lower on the food chain.

I think once "going green" becomes a mandated practice, you'll start hearing more calls for vegetarianism.

Who knew? Anyone who has been aware of their surroundings. It's not just the greenhouse gasses - it' the incredible amount of water and feed that cows consume - feed that is fed with grain that is grown with fertilizer, fertilizer that is made from petroleum.

I knew and so would you fatty if you weren't so busy woofing down double burgers with double cheese and a big glass of milk.

  37. katy says – reply to this

    37

Yeah. I wouldn't worry about cows taking over the planet if you stop eating them- they're BRED for factory farming. If corporate farmers stopped artificially inseminating factory-imprisoned cows, they'd stop reproducing. Pretty simple.

Not to mention all the health problems a meat-based diet causes…

  38. KMM says – reply to this

    38

Actually, grass (or pasture) fed beef is much more earth friendly. If a cow is given only grass and not grains (which aren't part of a cows natural diet) and not given the ground up parts of other animals (yes, it's true) then its waste can be allowed to naturally decompose.

Read The Omnivore's Dillema by Michael Pollan for more info.

  39. For Real says – reply to this

    39

I just read an article yesterday on feed efficiency compared with genetics and there has been university research that residual feed intake - RFI (ie. make cows more efficient when eating…gain weight faster with less food) can reduce methane emissions and reduce nutrients in manure. A win, win!

    43

this is so true- check out book: skinny little bitch. besides, cattle are very mistreated anyways

  44. Jayden says – reply to this

    44

The greenhouse gases emitted from cattle raising are not from non-ecofriendly methods of farming. It's actually due to the methane that is given off by the masses of cows farting. Sounds silly, I know, but it's true. Google it if you dont believe it (i did). So in order to limit greenhouse gas emissions, we do need to have less cows on this planet, not look for "ecofriendly" methods, Perez. You were misinformed.

  45. 3 says – reply to this

    45

You don't even have to stop eating meat. JUST EAT LESS. Its not something you should eat everyday, or for every meal. Besides, all those animals use up our resources. If all that farmland and grain were used for people it would be cheaper for the people in 3rd world countries to buy, meaning less people starving to death. IT WILL HELP END WORLD HUNGER!

perez, i don't think you know what they mean when they say cattle-rearing causes more greenhouse gasses than anything else. It means all that methane gas from cows farting is damaging the environment and I don't think there is a say to stop cows from farting, no matter how friendly we raise them, poor things.

    51

I guess you didn't know because you're too busy posting fake stories about lame celebrities. It takes about ten pounds of food to raise one pound of beef. That means we need to use much more land, water, pesticides for crops than we would if we just ate the crops ourselves. Also, that takes many more trucks, processing plants, etc. It all adds up. I know you live in a fake world where stupidity is rampant, but don't be part of the problem…READ A BOOK!

    Re: KMM

The only problem with grass or pasture feed cattle is that they tear up the grass from its roots. After they eat all the grass, they have to find another pasture. Considering how much they need to eat daily, a farmer would need a considerable amount of acreage just to feed a small herd.

  55. Win says – reply to this

    55

It's not just cows farting. Think about transportation of all these animals, feeding them, and the pollution they create! Plus the reason we never see vegetarianism being promoted is because the US government does NOT want us to stop eating meat. They subsidize meat which means if they didn't we would all have to pay 20 times more than we do now. McDonald's and other fast food restaurants would be PISSED.

Meat and food conditions are terrible right now… we need to make some serious changes in the way we live or we will destroy our mother earth! Vegetarianism won't solve world hunger, but it can help. GO VEG!

  56. katie says – reply to this

    56

I was raised on a dairy farm… cows fart. doesn't matter how you feed them… they will still fart just like every other animal on the planet. Its the methane emission that causes global warming… however, you can be more eco-friendly by using the wastes for fertilizer in crops on the farm or by selling it to companies who use them to make cow pots- cool pots that are made of manure and don't smell- you plant them straight into the ground and they biodegrade while fertilizing your plants at the same time

  57. Shari says – reply to this

    57

It is hard to raise cattle in an eco-friendly way as it is literally their bodily functions - namely gas - that causes the methane that ruins the environment. This is one of the reasons I went vegetarian. The animals are often treated horribly, too - boiled alive, skinned alive, beaten, raised in disgusting disease-ridden conditions. Improve your health, karma, and the environment by going veg!

  58. diehipsterfucks says – reply to this

    58

    Ellie, and other fools:
it's not just cows farting. Think about all the land needed to raise cows. Then, think of all the land needed to produce the food to feed all those cows (because, as you may or may not know, cows only eat grass but we feed them oats so that their growth is sped up from 2 years to 6 months). Do you realize how damaging that is to this earth?

It's not only the cow farts, it's the amount of water it takes to produce beef the trucks for transport, the grain, the land- if they would only stop producing all of these cows for meat production, it would be so good for the earth. not to mention that with today's food shortages one of the biggest problems is that cows eat like a ton of grain just to produce a little bit of meat…. it's really sick how affluent people are selfish enough to just keep eating meat regardless of how many people in the world are hungry.

oh yeah, and there is not one single chance that there is an eco friendly way to raise cattle. they wreck the topsoil. nitrogen from poop gets in groundwater supplies and contaminates them. methane is in the air creating horrible ozone problems…. on and on the list goes.

people like their meat. but people are selfish. no one is willing to change their life in order to help others. that's a shame.

    70

I've been a vegetarian for years now and have never felt better. I did know this fact about factory-farming for quite sometime now. I think he is right in trying to promote a veggie lifestyle but some people just like their meat. In addition to that, even if we were to take these steps to help our environment it's not going to get us anywhere without Japan, China, and India participating. And cities in Japan and especially India are trying to become more industrialized and so that is not going to happen in anytime in the near future. Also, a little tidbit for you, PETA is now going to give away $1,000,000 to a group of scientists that can come up with a way to distribute Vitro which is meat technology/ meat substitute so that they would basically being making real meat without the animals. Pretty interesting stuff there.

Theres not much of a way to raise cattle in an eco-friendly way as they produce tons and tons of crap! Literally, feces. Where do you think that goes? Into big ole' piles that release greenhouse gases, and sink right into our water supply.

Guh-ross! The only way to solve this is to reduce the number of animals raised for factory farming. GO VEG! :)

    82

if the number of people eating meat is reduced, so is the number of factory farmed animals. it's the excrement from animals…there is so much and not enough places to use it, so it piles up. the only reason to eat meat is taste (i think it tastes terrible now that i've gone so long without eating it, but i was never a big meat eater) and convenience….all self-serving reasons. if you're a meat eater, consider going veg…it's not only better for the earth, but it's better for you. if something else isn't worth changing for, consider changing to improve your health. i haven't been sick even one time (cold, flu, nothin') since going veg. give it a try!

    88

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ECO-FRIENDLY CATTLE-REARING. Here's another little fact: 80% of the grains grown in North American, on farm land that used to be forest, GOES TO FEEDING LIVE STOCK. Not to mention the billions of tonnes of fresh water required to raise calves to adulthood. Cattle, even when raised "organically" sitll leave behind feces and urine that pollute local water systems with E.Coli (remember the spinach thing? that was all run off from a local rancher) and enough nirates to turn a baby blue.

Did you know we could feed the world, literally, with all those non-perishable grains? Go watch Peaceable Kingdom, Diet for a New America or Earthlings and open your eyes and minds. Then there's the fact that vegans are just plain sexier, no love-handles, fatrolls or heart clogging cholesterol. Heart disease is the number one killer in America and diets high in fat ladened animal products are to blame. GO VEGAN, HELP THE PLANET, HELP AN ANIMAL, HELP YOURSELF! It's the healthiest thing you can do.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! GODDAMNIT! "Who knew?!" Jesus Christ, not you I guess. And you still don't.

You CAN'T "raise cattle in a more eco-friendly way" unless you can do it without FEEDING them or allowing them to CRAP and FART.

Cattle-rearing is terrible for the environment because of the fucking resources it depletes and the gases the animals themselves cause.

Do some fucking research before you add your idiot comments!

I know other people have already said this Perez, but there is no "ecofriendly" way to raise cattle; it is the methane gasses they themselves as animals produce that causes the touble. Go veg!

Does frickin' Perez even read the talkbacks to see how stupid his own comments are? Update your post on Paul McCartney and take out the ridiculous sentences about raising cows in a more eco-friendly way. And for the people who say they can't stand veggies … he's not telling you to stop eating chicken and fish, or god forbid, soy.

By the way, Pereztl or whatever the hell your calling yourself now, maybe if you stop chowing down on the double doubles at In-N-Out, you'll be able to jog without your shirt on in Malibu. When you call up your Paparazzi friends for a photo-op to make money, just like your frenemy Mischa Barton. Isn't it funny how we're exactly like the people we hate?

Hey Perez, you may be the last one to find out that eating vegetarian leaves a smaller carbon footprint. And the last to find out that the methane produced by cows is the biggest greenhouse gas offender.
But good luck finding a shitless cow for your more "eco friendly" cattle production.
I'll get off my high horse now, but not before I say this: If cows were cute like baby seals, would you never eat a hamburger again? Because I'll tell you this, sister, chicken and cows are killed every bit as cruelly as the seal pups and in mass quantities.

If you can't quit eating meat, eat kosher meat, which, as part of it's kosher stamp, is processed in a humane way. Buy free range, vegetarian, steroid free chicken. You bet it's fuckin' expensive. Drink only organic, milk. If you pay a lot, you'll choose more carefully.

Get it? Meat will be more expensive for us, but the animal has a more quality life during it's short life on earth. Anything that has eyes or shits has a soul. So, if you eat meat, or feed your children or animals meat, make sure you know where it came from. Eating shitty meat from a chain supermarket is the moral equivalent of fucking Lindsey Lohan. You don't know where it's been, but you know it's lived hard. Be selective about the meat you eat, like the people you fuck.

AND, don't mamas, don't let your babies drink out of anything out of but glass bottles with silicone nipples. Better yet, breast feed.

Another is to raise cattle in a more eco-friendl……oh you mean like letting them graze in the fields instead of the abuses they suffer on factory farms. Oh yeah, maybe we can cut down more rain-forests in Brazil so that cattle can graze? So-called environmentalist don't want to address the issue of the greenhouse gases produced by the inhumane factory farming of cows, pigs, horses and chickens because it would have to force them to stop eating meat…and how many of them really want to. Al Gore? I don't think so…just take a look at that gut and you can tell he is a meat-eater. Instead, they want to save the forests, the polar bears, the oceans, but how about saving a cow, horse, goat, or at least let them lead a more humane life. Go Veggie/go Vegan and have a healthier life and a happier planet.

If you young people knew how you've been bamboozled into thinking the EARTH needs saving, you'd be so furious. I guarantee you this - The Earth, Mother nature, will shake us off like a bad case of fleas before we ever do anything of substance to it. Do you REALLY think we can control the weather? REALLY?
