He's Not Afraid Of Some Mole

Filed under: Anglophilia > Ewan McGregor

wenn5101224.jpg

Get your skin checked regularly, y'all!

Actor Ewan McGregor, best known for his role in the Star Wars prequels, has had a cancerous mole removed from his skin.

Ewan, a 37 year-old father of three, said "I went to see a specialist who thought they were better to be removed, and indeed he was correct."

He had the mole removed from just below his right eye after doctors spotted the potential health risk.

As for the surgery, McGregor states it was "not that big of a deal."

A British dermatologist said Ewan did the right thing by getting his mole checked out, and stated, "If you're worried about a mole you can see your GP who, if they think it might be cancerous, can refer you to a dermatologist. It doesn't cost anything and there are no long waiting lists, so it's definitely better to be safe than sorry."

When McGregor was asked if he found the surgery frightening, he responded sarcastically, "It was great fun having skin cancer, it was great, I really enjoyed it."

Thankfully it wasn't anything serious.

Cancer sux!

THANKS PEREZ for writing about this!!! I'm 28, but last year at age 27 I had a skin cancer tumor removed from my face resulting in an one-inch scar. Luckily I can cover it pretty easily with makeup, but when people notice it, I tell them skin cancer CAN happen to ANYONE at ANY AGE.

I had skin cancer removed from my left shoulder last year. I never thought about sunscreen unless I knew I'd be outdoors all day. It turned out that a decade of tanks tops was the culprit. Use sunscreen daily & if you have short hair, don't forget your ears - my dad developed cancer there. Now I slather myself in it from head to toe. Since it was on my shoulder there was concern that it may get into my joints or bones. That was quite frightening because then I would've been screwed. Fortunately they were able to remove all of the cancer cells early. Even though I live in Hawaii, I no longer care that I'm so white people need to put their sunglasses on. I'd rather look like a ghost & not get cancer, then to look like shoe leather & have cancer.

I love Ewan! He hot! He did not break up Tom and Nic's marriage. He is
married to a beautiful French woman and they have 3 kids. You must
be referring to when they did Moulin Rouge! Nothing going on there his
wife was with him. Yes, he is built. Makes great pictures too. Go Ewan!
Glad you are going to be ok.

    23

While it may be free to get your moles checked and removed in the UK, it most definitely is NOT FREE here in the good ole' USA. I had 2 moles (non-cancerous, it turned out, whew!) and it cost me over $400. And I have health insurance!

Must be nice to live in a country with a conscience. The British health car system rocks: "If you're worried about a mole you can see your GP who, if they think it might be cancerous, can refer you to a dermatologist. It doesn't cost anything and there are no long waiting lists, so it's definitely better to be safe than sorry." This, alas, isn't the case in the U.S. for-profit (LOTS of profit) health "care" system.

please note the comment on how easy and FREE the British medical system is set up. "It doesn't cost anything and there are no long waiting lists, so it's definitely better to be safe than sorry."
Ever had to have a mole removed in the US. Not this worry free and not cheap.
Remember to vote for Universal Healthcare in America!!!
    PS- What a babe!

    34

Did a british derm really say "it doesn't cost a thing and there are no long waiting lists?" Wow, looks like we all better get heading to britain if there is national healthcare on the horizon in the states.

My college boyfriend died of skin cancer- on his face near his eye is where it started. They SAID they got it all- no chemo. He begged them (this is a large famous hospital) to give him chemo just to be sure. But it was not a melanoma, and they said the "margins were clear", so they said nope- all okay. Well it wasn't. He died of the cancer that went through his body within a year. The area around the eyes is a common area for that type of skin cancer. GET CHECKED and then don't let them say it's all okay. It doesn't have to be a MOLE!

  36. sandman says – reply to this

    36

"It doesn't cost anything and there are no long waiting lists" 'WOW that must be nice!!! Like I read from a few posters, we're all thinking the same thing when we read that one! Must be nice! No lines, No long forms to fill out, and if you get pushed from one doctor to another it ends up costing DOUBLE, and you have to wait in "long lines" all over again, and fill out the same forms over and over and over. And if you end up having to have a prescription filled, Kaching Kaching Kaching MoMonie! Getting a little mole checked out could end up costing over a $1,000.00…

Hey, but don't forget, here in the US we have so many "freedoms" compared to socialized countries like Europe:

The "freedom" to not be able to afford your health care
The "freedom" to have to declare bankruptcy over unpaid medical bills
The "freedom" of employment at will (i.e. your employer can fire you at any time with no reason or explanation)
The "freedom" to marry whomever you want (I take that back–not if you're gay)

Gosh, ain't it great being free?!

The last time I had a suspicious blemish looked at in the USA, it cost me nearly $150. just to determine if I needed a biopsy $$. I'm relieved to know the Ewan took care of business…he's always been one of my favs. He's really talented…and oh-so-clever with the Queen's english.

Melanoma is a beast that if it is not found in the very earliest stages is most likely a death sentence. Melanoma does not respond to chemotherapy - that is the problem. It will metastasize to your organs and then eventually to the brain. There is no cure. Please wear sunscreen everyday, particularly if you are prone to moles. I have seen a very dear loved one die from this, so please take my advice & wear sunscreen. Do not use tanning beds.

I've had 3 moles taken out. 2 just below my breasts and one near the arm pit. I couldn't wear a bra for a week, which sucked. I should have more moles removed from my back. I don't want to, since I am scared to death of needles.

Some moles should be removed even if they're not cancerous.
