Dying As Art?

Artist Gregor Schneider has German politicians and art curators up in arms, according to reports.
He's been actively searching for a terminally ill person to feature in his new exhibit.
The volunteer would spend his/her dying hours in an art gallery so the public can 'admire' the way some light plays on the flesh of a person gasping for the last breath.
Just like Abortion Girl's 'art' - we think that Schneider's death exhibit is just plain WRONG!!
An influential German gallery owner Beatrix Kalwa spoke for many German curators who rule out the idea of giving space to Schneider’s exhibit.
She says, “Existential matters like death, birth or the act of reproduction do not belong in a museum. There is a fundamental difference between portraying these acts in an art form, and showing them in actuality.”
Well, we would be okay with seeing people having sex in a museum!

Nothing is sacred. death and reproduction should remain a mystery. Art helps up to understand and cope with this mystery. by portraying this mystery to viewers in its real state is not Art, it is shock. shocking people…yawn….yawn it's a cop out to shock people. Artists should stop taking the easy way by giving it to viewers in such a real way. let us work a little and try to come up with our own visions of how we can perceive such haunting of life's reality such as death and reproduction–abortion.

i believe artist are people who reflect the world as they see through their work. be it literature, sculptures or paintings etc
back in the day, artists portrayed women such as the mona lisa as beautiful, elegant etc.
however, now we're seeing art that is dark and disturbing. self proclaimed artists are exhibiting death and depression and mental illnesses. i think this is saying something about the current state of affairs and we should sit up and listen. i 100% disagree with the latest 'art' proposals but we should notice that the world is generally depressed.

This is like the "artist" Guillermo Vargas Habacuc. He took a dog from the street, he tied him to a rope in an art gallery, and is starving him to death.
For several days, the "artist" and the visitors of the exhibition have watched emotionless the shameful 'masterpiece' based on the dog's agony, until eventually he died.

OMG, I saw that petition to stop that man who has the dying dog in his gallery. He ties the dog up and lets it starve to death while people walk by and say it's art. ANd no one in the gallery does anything to stop it. We have to stop this!

The artists who have come before such as Picasso, Van Gogh, Rothko, Warhol, Manet… etc. etc. etc. actually constructed images that are eternal and lead the viewer to an emotional epiphany. These conceptual artists you have been featuring come across to me the same as shockjocks. Audiences today have such short attention spans that yes, it may work initially to shock them but, ultimately the concept will evaporate into thin air and the audience will move on. We'll hopefully always have those very real paintings from very real artists hanging in the MET though.

art? ones perception of art has become so warped and enigmatic. to display a dying person? what is the subject? perhaps the art of death? or perhaps the art of suffering. in any case one who thinks either should be dabbled with or put on public display is over compensating for their lack of both artistic ability and originality.
what is your opinion then on the body images exhibit? that is dead human bodies that volunteered for their bodies to be used in art exhibits for us to look at. I don't think it's art I think it's disgusting and wrong to do it. it still is art and some people like it and some people don't.

What is so inhumane about it? It's in EXTREMELY poor taste, and the dying person's relatives will have to be forced to see him/her in a museum as they spend their last days. But if they sign a disclaimer and want to participate then how is it immoral? If a person volunteers for something, it's their right to do so.
What was so distasteful about Abortion Girl (at least to me) is that she was timing conception and inducing a miscarriage on herself to create this shocking conversation piece as art. The embryo's (well..really at that point they were just cells) can't sign away any rights to be part of that. They weren't being aborted because their mom thought it was the best thing if the pregnancy wasn't carried through for themselves or the fetus. They were being aborted for art. I don't see much correlation between these two pieces.
And before everyone jumps down my throat, I am pro-choice and currently 5 months pregnant. I just don't agree with using abortion for art..but as long as the person is willing to die for art then nothing is immoral..just horribly disturbing
