Famous Grizzly Bear Kills Trainer

rockybear.JPG

How sad.

Stephan Miller, a 39 year old animal trainer from Big Bear Lake, CA, was attacked by a grizzly bear on Tuesday at the Predators in Action wild animal training center.

Two other handlers were working with the 5 year-old bear, named Rocky, when it attacked. The other two were able to pepper spray and subdue Rocky.

Luckily, there were no other injuries.

You've probably seen Rocky before. It's the same grizzly bear featured in Will Ferrell's film Semi-Pro, in which Ferrell appears to wrestle with the bear.

What could have gone so wrong???

Officials arrived to investigate the incident and Fish and Game spokesman, Harry Morse, said yesterday that his department would not decide whether Rocky would be euthanized since the attack occurred outside its jurisdiction.

It may be up to the San Bernandino county animal care officials to decide Rocky's fate.

Poor thing. He didn't asked to be locked up and trained like pet. He's a wild animal, after all. You can't really ever predict what they're going to go.

Just ask Siegfried and Roy!

Eerily enough, Randy Miller, the owner of the training location and cousin of the attacked trainer, was quoted in the local newspaper in February as saying Rocky is "the best working bear in the business." But continued by stating, "If one of these animals gets a hold of your throat, you're finished."

What will happen to poor Rocky???

Should they kill him?

They should let the bear go and kill anyone who captures, trains and cruelly exhibit bears (and other animals!) for the amusement of humans in movies and on TV. Disgusting!
p.s. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

      15

While yes, this is tragic, I would hate for them to kill the bear. Maybe this should be a time to reflect why we arrogant human think wild animals are ours for the taking. Maybe bears shouldn't live in animal training facilities, but rather, out in the wild where they belong. This sort of thing wouldn't happen if we just let animals live according to their nature rather than to how we'd like them to live.

      18

My goodness…. !! Oh so sad, the poor bear is locked up and gets angry once and they want to put him down? Why dont they just let him back into the wild, him being unfamiliar with being the wild will be punishment enough, i dont know when we will learn that these wild animals belong in the Wild..

    19. exotic animal trainer says – reply to this

      19

When you train large dangerous animals you take on that risk that you will be hurt or even killed. I have worked for many years with many different animals and it is just something that you are always aware of while working with them.

Its not the bears fault for acting on what is hard wired into him.

    20. sofie says – reply to this

      20

      no way!

    21. Lauren says – reply to this

      21

I think it would be VERY wrong on their part if they decided to kill Rocky..i mean it's a bear for god sake…why would they kill an animal for acting like one?! Thats just ridiculous..i mean Rocky never asked or chose to prance around for entertainment purposes, so it should be inevitable that at some point his animalisitc behaviors would come out….I just think it would be very wrong, and very confusing as to why they would kill him for acting like his species. I could understand if he went on a rampage and they shot him with a TRANQUILIZER and then released him into the wild, but to just kill him because he can't be used for entertainment anymore? That's just stupid! He's an animal, and should not be punished for acting like one.

    22. Erin says – reply to this

      22

NO! The bear is a wild creature that God made that was not intended to be acting in movies. Rocky was acting out of instinct and did nothing wrong. Shame on the people who captured him to live outside of his natural habitat!

    23. Michelle says – reply to this

      23

NO! Don't kill the bear. It's f-ed up to lock up wild animals and treat them like domestic pets.

No!!!!!!!!!!!! They should not kill this innocent animal. They should release him to the wild where he belongs!

It is not his fault! PETA, where are you!

    27. Cassie says – reply to this

      27

You said it…he is a wild animal…he never asked for this. I am sure he is well taken care of, etc., etc. But no matter how much you train a wild…you can never entirely remove the "wild"…he should not die for that. :(

      32

no, they are the one's who are doing something unnatural and interfering with the bear's natural life/habit, etc. they've made a mess and now they think the solution to cleaning it up is to kill the bear that they captured/manipulated?

the solution is, since the bear probably can't be set free in the wild as it's been domesticated, they should place the bear in a caring conservation/park/home where it can live out the rest of it's life in a decent manner. there are folks/organizations who have homes for retired show animals or domesticised wild animals

      40

it never ceases to amazing when people are like "wow no way, that wild animal attacked a human! a bear, acting like a bear!? get the fuck out!" It makes me sick when people train animals that should be in the wild, then when their normal instincts come out and they actually act like they should, they want to blame the animal and kill them and not blame the dumb idiots that tried to keep it as a house cat. fuck them, let the bear live.

Leave the wild animals alone. You put yourself at risk by locking them up and trying to treat them as pets that can be trained. Let the bear live and punish those who gave him such a miserable life.

    57. Irma Pena says – reply to this

      57

It's a wild animal, it's their instinct. The bear should not be killed because of it.

    58. __dani says – reply to this

      58

The bear is an ANIMAL that killed a HUMAN. I don't care if he's highly trained or not, when an animal kills a human, it's time for the animal to go nite nite .. PERMANENTLY. You can't trust them to never do it again. Put the bear down before there are any more senseless human deaths.

      61

I really dont think the bear should be killed but at the same time what else can be done. The bear has shown to be dangerous to be around and handle now that it has killed, so the handlers arnt going to want to keep it cuz it has no use, but at the same time it cant be released into the wild as it wont survive out there by itself cuz it hasnt grown up in the wild….so either way the bear is screwed

    62. jstmekathy says – reply to this

      62

It is sad but they should put the bear down. Once an animal like that tastes human blood he's even a bigger threat to people.

    63. Anon says – reply to this

      63

Truthfully, in my opinion the bear should not be destroyed. Where do these hollywood people get off thinking that a 'wild' animal can be tamed in a way where an attack is not possible..?? These animals should be left alone in the wilderness, where they belong. It is very sad that someone died from this attack, but it really isn't the animals fault (in my opinion, again). The same thing with Steve Irwin - he lost his life due to a stingray attack. People say he had all of this respect for the wild animals he encountered, but that's bullshit - in every episode, he would provoke a croc or alligator to some kind of attack. Did anyone see the episode where he held out his infant in front of a croc? That is just plain stupid and ignorant. As far as I'm concerned, these wild animals should be banned from being used in movies, etc.

    64. ashley says – reply to this

      64

Rocky should def not be killed. Like he didnt ask to be trained. HAHA_he prob was making good money though. But; he's an animal. WTH do u expect??

    65. Jody-licious says – reply to this

      65

Hell no!! Why should a wild animal who has been captured and confined for the pure entertainment of people be euthanized due to his insticts. I hate people. I really do. I hate this dude had to die, but COME ON!! It wasn't as if this was premeditated murder! Ugh.

    66. jl says – reply to this

      66

no they shouldnt kill the bear.. its a wild animal.. they should stop training wild animals.

    67. Joel says – reply to this

      67

THEY CAN'T KILL HIM! IT ISN'T MURDER! HE IS A NATURALLY WILD ANIMAL WHO SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN CONFINED AND USED FOR ENTERTAINMENT IN THE FIRST PLACE!

    68. FIONA AGAIN says – reply to this

      68

      Its not the bears fault—

    69. Christine says – reply to this

      69

It's unfair and unrealistic to expect a wild animal to follow human rules instead of whats inborn to them. While I feel bad for the man that died, I feel bad for the bear and the life he must endure behind bars.

    70. Alexis says – reply to this

      70

No way! Let Rocky live! Kill the trainers. If I were the bear I would go after them too.

    71. Anna says – reply to this

      71

      NO!!!

    72. bri says – reply to this

      72

It should absolutely not be euthanized! Humans kill thousands of animals every day for their meat, fur and skin; it's amazingly hypocritical that we would expect to not receive the same treatment. This is one of many reasons why animals should not be kept in captivity.

    73. cc says – reply to this

      73

no. they should kill animal trainers. inhumane humans.

    74. haler says – reply to this

      74

definitely no. He's a wild animal and therefore should be in the wild. A grizzly bear can never be a pet and shouldn't be killed because they acted on their natural instincts.

    75. ana says – reply to this

      75

I don't think they should kill the bear. He's an animal and that's what animals do.I don't think people should keep animals locked away like that. They need to live the way they were meant to live. After all how would we feel if we were locked away?

    76. br says – reply to this

      76

DON'T kill him! He's an animal and shouldn't even be cageed up to begin with! He's huge and has claws, he might accidentally kill a person who is in the cage with him because of his size, it's not his fault.

    77. Austin says – reply to this

      77

Ugh…poor bear. They should not kill the bear. No one knows the circumstances as to why this bear killed this guy, and who knows if he was mistreated.

    78. aribear says – reply to this

      78

      no…

    79. Pam says – reply to this

      79

The bear was just behaving true to his nature… it was not his fault. If a human is stupid enough to "train" bears, then he was taking his life in his own hands. A bear "trainer" should know better than anyone how dangerous they are!!! (I can hear Stephen Colbert already…)

    80. Lauren says – reply to this

      80

Absolutely not. It's only natural instinct for the bear when he feels threatened. Should've left him alone in the first place. He was probably angry for being in a Will Ferrell movie.

    81. Judy Jetson says – reply to this

      81

To paraphrase Chris Rock, the BEAR WENT BEAR!!! Just like Roy's Tiger, the wild animal did what he does..WENT WILD!!!

NO! They should set him free into the wild.

    83. Kate says – reply to this

      83

Maybe these animals should be left in their natural setting. You don't see bears walking a tightrope in the woods. I hate animal acts an circuses. It is inhumane.

    84. Twingy says – reply to this

      84

How about putting Rocky in some sanctuary somewhere? He is obviously f@cked because he has been somewhat tame and wouldn't likely survive out in the wild. There has to be some place they can put him. A zoo???? Something??

    85. Laura says – reply to this

      85

No they shouldn't euthanize the bear. Like you said it's a wild animal. It's sad that someone lost their life but it was the risk he was willing to take to work with the bear. I bet the dead guy wouldn't even want the bear euthanized anyway. SAVE THE BEAR!!

OMG…NO! They better NOT kill Rocky! They chose to want to train this bear knowing his animal instincts. This is how they communicate, he was probably in a bad mood! Not his fault at all. We humans have this fascination with watching animals do cute tricks, well guess what sometimes they bite you in the ass!!!!!!

    89. BRITNEY says – reply to this

      92

No, they shouldn't kill Rocky. It's not his fault. I keep thinking that one day, we're going to read of an incident like this at Sea World. There's a reason the whales in captivity at Sea World are called KILLER whales.

    93. jill says – reply to this

      93

We don't even give all human murderers the death penalty when they kill other humans on purpose. This poor bear who probably didn't mean to kill his trainer doesn't deserve to die.

God i hope they don't kill this poor bear he was doing what nature taught him to do and unfortunately his poor trainer had to die, but i bet if he could say something he would want the bear to live.

    98. BETHANY says – reply to this

      98

I hate hearing stories like this. Yeah it's sad that someone died but, the bear was only doing what bears do. It's not defective or anything, it's a bear. Anyone who works with these animals know that every day they are potentially risking their lives. We shouldn't use animals like these for anything. They should be in the wild, not show business.

    99. Pootie says – reply to this

      99

No WAY!!! They cannot kill him he didn't do anything but follow his natural instinct and they cannot kill him! OMG if they kill that bear it would be a terrible tragedy.

Just like you said Perez…. he didn't asked to be locked up and treated like a pet.
He is a wild animal and that's what they do.
I feel sorry for the man that died and his family…
BUT TAKING IT OUT ON THAT BEAR IS ABOUT AS INHUMANE AS IT GETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
