Tumor Could Grow, Causing Vietnamese Teen To Suffocate
MIAMI — A Vietnamese girl with a 17-pound facial tumor is awaiting life-saving surgery that will restore her ability to eat and speak.
Lai Thi Dao, 15, suffers from a Schwannoma tumor that has been growing since she was 3. The tumor has severely disfigured her face and kept her from attending school.
"She had been with no treatment for the last 10 years," said Dr. Jesus Gomez, who is performing the surgery. "Something that started like a small black bean at the tongue now has become this huge tumor."
Doctors at the University of Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital said the tumor, likely the largest Schwannoma tumor ever reported in the world, has grown so large that she has difficulty talking, eating and sleeping. They said it would likely cut off her throat's passageway, which could cause her to suffocate.
The tumor is scheduled to be removed in a 10-hour surgery April 29.
The International Kids Fund is trying to raise money to help pay for her surgery.

This is to seanmcd… I saw the story live on TV last night (I'm from Miami). Her parents live in a very remote village in the mountains in Central Vietnam. They have tried taking her to the local hospital many times and always get turned away. They have other children as well. They are very poor farmers and have done everything in their power. Your comment is not only ignorant but very childish. You should know the facts before assuming her parents did nothing. Thank Perez for posting this and making it known nationwide!

There was a show about this condition a few years back about a girl named Marlie. She had a tumor just like this and her family couldn't afford surgery (that should shut you up #11) and also because she lived in a country where the doctors couldn't perform the surgery. She ended up being flown out to Miami and had a successful surgery there. (one of several she needs). You people who are saying how hideous she looks and things like that should be ASHAMED of yourselves. She didn't ask to be born with that condition, it's the hand she's been dealt and you should be so thankful that you don't have something wrong with you like that. Ignorance.

WTF!!! How the hell do you let something get that big? That should have been taken care of years ago. I know she probably from a poor family but I would have done everything in my power to get that done. I would have moved mountains if that was the case, I would appeal to every organization I could find. That family waited too long to seek help.

I want to know why this wasn't taken care of more promptly?? It could have been less traumatic if it had been removed when it first began to grow. 10 YEARS without any care? That's negligence. Why are these poor farmers still having kids if they can't properly care for the one they had?!

It would appear that some of us can not read! It has been explained more than once that the girl lives in a very poor village and medical attention is not readily available. To those who comment her parents should be charged, lets just say we have parents in the US that are less responsible than these parents. Most of you have no ideal what is is like to live pay check to pay check in the US, let alone live on less in a under developed country. Get a fricking life!

I saw a show about a similar girl from Chile a couple of years ago. IT is amazing what they can do to help these poor children who are affilicted with this disease, disorder, whatever.

Exactly, I watch the Health channel all the time and they are a lot of children and adults with these types of facial tumors. It's not because they are being abused it's because they either don't have the money, the resources or live in a very secluded country/village where they are probably looked down upon…not just them but the entire family. They pretty much live in hiding with no one to go to for help. In fact some have said that they feel ashamed that it got so bad, that they didn't know how to ask for help. I remember seeing the special on Marlie and often think about her. I wonder how she is and how she is looking.
