I live in San Francisco and I grew up that all are equal. I am straight but have many friends to hear this happening so close to home AGAIN kills me. My sister (who is a high school student) will do this tomorrow. I will also express it at work. I work for a hospital and people see me I am going to wear a sticker that says Day Of Silence. This hate needs to stop!!!!!

I am so proud of Larry King for going on record in support of the Day of Silence.
It just brings that much more attention to an issue that people try to ignore until a Matthew Shepard or a Lawrence King, then it gets coverage for a few days and then goes away again. If all of you Perez readers stood up and either participated in the day of silence tomorrow or found another way to speak out against the hate, think about how much we could accomplish.

You go to school to learn, not show off your sexuality. Keep your personal business in the bedroom and do your fucking homework, jerk. Day of silence my ass, what is it that's hoped to be accomplished? How GAY.

  38. WHAT ABOUT ALL THE OTHER KIDS? says – reply to this
    38

This is a very sad story & I feel horrible for the innocent kid & his parents. No one deserves to be killed based upon their sexual orientation. HOWEVER, IT REALLY ANNOYS ME THAT THE MEDIA FOCUSES ON THIS ONE BOY, WHEN GANG CRMES & KILLINGS HAPPEN EVERYDAY IN OXNARD COMMITTED BY MANY ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. OXNARD IS THE NEW COMPTON, EXCEPT THAT IT IS ALL HISPANIC GANGS. INNOCENT PEOPLE ARE SHOT ALL THE TIME IN OXNARD EVEN OUTSIDE OF GANG TERRITORY & THE MEDIA SAYS NOTHING ABOUT THOSE VICTIMS!!!!!!!!! THE MEDIA FOCUSES ON CRIMES AGAINST GAYS (WHICH THEY SHOULD CAUSE THAT IS HORRIBLE TOO) BUT IGNORES CRIMES INVOLVING ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT GANG MEMBER & THE INNOCENT PEOPLE CAUGHT IN THEIR FIGHTING.

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?
Why is it OK to make fun of and make gay people miserable? To beat and maybe even to kill them? It seems like it is perfectly acceptable in the U.S.
In fact, it cuts across all ethnic and religious boundaries that it is OK to hurt these people and to attempt to drive them out. America is ass backwards on this. Homophobic behavior is a convenient outlet for straight people's aggressions, 'cuz it's always OK to dump on the gay person.
I swear I will never say anything mean about Larry King again.
    THANK YOU LARRY KING

  41. apples and oranges says – reply to this
    41

Re: WHAT ABOUT ALL THE OTHER KIDS?
You're talking about two different things. A straight kid, no matter where he comes from, whether he is legally or illegally in this country, innocent or a ciminal, has the entire world in his corner simply because, as a straight kid, he is in the majority. (Whether he chooses be in a gang and to act like a criminal is his choice!)
But a gay kid is 100% on his own. His teachers and the principal won't back him up for lots of reasons (their own version of peer pressure, or their own homphobia, for example.) And his parents or church? Forget them too. Nobody wants a gay kid.
I get your point but gay kids have no back up. I think they deserve more attention than a gang banger who, it seems to me, could have a much easier time fitting in than any gay kid.

Perez, gay killing happens every day in Jamaica. It's routine and is encouraged by the dancehall music playing on our airwaves.

Do your part by boycotting dancehall music!

  45. Wow! says – reply to this
    45

I'm surprised this message came from Larry King. As an interviewer, he has to keep his politics personal to maintain professional objectivity. I've always kind of suspected he became an increasing closet conservative in his older years. Of course, the issue of kids' safety in school is universal. Still, I am pleasantly surprised to hear LK promote this important cause.

    Re: The D

Right….if only the heteros would do the same then that would be fair….they demonstrate their liking for the girls in school in their way of dressing and their way of acting towards them. Why should there be a double standard? Your redneck rules should apply to everyone then.

  50. pride says – reply to this

Bravo Larry and Perez!! I encourage all children and adults to participate in the Day of Silence, no matter their walk of life. My oldest son is gay. When I hear stories like this it angers me and makes me sad. No one person should ever feel as if they have to keep who they truly are locked inside in fear of actions like this.

Excuse me? Do you actually LIVE in Oxnard? I do. And it is NOT the "new Compton". Oxnard is far from perfect, but stop trying to make it sound like a total hellhole, horrible place. Ugh. Learn.

    57

That is the truth. God it's as if people actually think they can choose their sexual orientation. No, you're born with it and that's that. I wish people would stop making a huge deal out of it. It's like saying to someone stop being a human and start being a vampire. No, it just doesn't work like that. You are what you are. No one chooses to be gay or straight.

Due to extenuating circumstances, my school had it's day of silence last week and a very small amount of us participated. People knew what we were doing and spent the entire day teasing us/trying to make us talk — making light of a very important stance on a very real issue. If you see people keeping the Day of Silence, please be respectful.

As a Christian myself, I am saddened by ALL acts of hatred and bullying. I wish there was a way other than one of silence, to bring light to a topic that really needs a way to be resolved. It truely breaks my heart and I pray for the hatred and bullying to stop on the lives of the innocent.

    Re: Victoria
Actually, I live only about 30 minutes north of Oxnard & because I get your guy's local news, I hear all the time in the news that another person has been shot there. I have also been to Oxnard many times and it is S-C-A-R-Y!!! ARE YOU SERIOUSLY DENYING THAT YOU GUYS DON'T HAVE A HUGE GANG PROBLEM THERE? A COUPLE OF INNOCENT PEOPLE GOT KILLED LAST YEAR THAT WEREN'T EVEN GANG MEMBERS–JUST INNOCENT PEOPLE TRYING TO LIVE PEACEFULLY. WAKE UP–YOUR DENIAL ISN'T HELPING ANYONE.
OXNARD MAY NOT BE COMPTON YET, BUT W/ THE 14 GANGS YOU GUYS HAVE, YOU GUYS MUST JUST BE ON YOUR WAY. OH YEAH, AND OXNARD WAS THE WORST CITY IN ALL OF CALIFORNIA FOR DUIs.

A Formal Denunciation of the Day of Silence

Dear Participants of the Day of Silence,

By doing this you are only insinuating the stereotypes presented by the mainstream, and thus you are further ostracizing yourselves from the general population. If you long to be accepted why must you exhibit your lifestyles so obnoxiously? We don't care if you like the same sex, stop overplaying it. The persecution you go through is vastly outshone by countless other groups of people who, much more grateful than yourselves, are going through actual oppression. How many people die from starvation each day? How about war? Disease? Now how many gay people are killed each day because they are gay?
As for the non-gays who are staying silent in support: Stop trying to be "in" with the gay community. You are charlatans of the “holier than thou” variety who parade around acting as if you are so great for "caring" about people. You are just like the pseudo-intellectuals who put up “Save Darfur” posters as if it matters. It is just a fad for you, in all your teenage angst, to latch onto so you don't have to face the reality that, as an individual, your personality lacks substance. And for the few of you who are naïve enough to actually care, realize that what you do doesn't impact anything of cosmic and long-term importance.

i can understand people not liking homophobics but, if you choose not to associate yourself with gay people thats your choice because many know that the gay lifestyle is abomination. i also think that it's sad that this whole gay thing is being forcefed onto the people it is not a good life style to live in Gods's eyes therefore it should not be on the main stream ,but at the same time there is no reason to hate someone like that, i respect all people even homosexuals, and r.ip to the victim, murder was uncalled for.(I have friend from africa who told me they throw stones at gay men in his village) r.i.p to the victim,

Re: The D – What's hoped to be accomplished is the end of one child shooting another child on school property, irrelevant of sexuality because that should NEVER happen under ANY circumstances. And yes most people are proud of the fact that they are NOT homophobic and may choose to express their concern through silence. In a world full of noise it's actually quite a beautiful demonstration for non-violence and understanding don't you think?

We ALL need to wake-up to homiphobia!!! its the most distructive thing imaginable. I am gay and have been since i was born when i was 4yrs old i wanted to play with barbie not trucks do you think i chose to feel this way? do you think i was FORCING my feelings on others? i couldnt help the way i was !!! i was a child for gods sake and i tried to hide my feminine ways as i was constantly teased as soon as i started school i was too young to even understand how i was difernt to the others, i was bullied my whole school life and the effect it has had on my life is astronomicle i have suffred severe depression and attempted suicide several times i had to drop out of school and leave home, my only means of servival prostitution, at this point in my life at 23yrs old i have severe anxiety and have locked evryone out of my lifei dont know how to live anymore, and abuse drugs. do not work i simply lock myself in the house allday and night hardly leaving. So that is what homiphobia has done to my life and believe me i did not force my sexuality on others infact i tried to hide it to the point where i cant even talk to people anymore . THAT IS WHAT HOMIPHOBIA DOES. if its not a bullet in the back of the head its a lifetime of pain and psycoligists.
