You've Been Warned

pinkberry.jpg

Looks like the Hollywood sensation Pinkberry frozen yogurt isn't the healthy, nonfat and all-natural treat it claimed to be.

Tears stream down our face.

The stuff that goes into the popular froyo was recently analyzed and the results are a bit scary!

There's 23 ingredients in a Pinkberry. Two of the 'sugars' used, fructose and maltodextrin, another are both laboratory-produced ingredients extracted from corn syrup. Then there's a bunch of stuff that sounds like items you'd find in a scary science lab, including five additives defined by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization as 'emulsifiers' (propylene glycol esters, lactoglycerides, sodium acid pyrophosphate, mono- and diglycerides).

Dr. Gary A. Reineccius, a professor in the department of food science and nutrition at the University of Minnesota said that many of the ingredients Pinkberry uses gives it qualities that nonfat frozen yogurt would not have naturally.

Thanks, Pinkberry for proving that Mom's again always right. If it's too good, it aint true!

Fructose is a naturally occuring sugar that shows up in fruits and veggies. You're still an idiot. Don't you look at anything you post before you put it out there?

      103

Perez I'm a nutrition student and I study all those ingredients. Emulsifiers like the ones above are in all non-fat frozen yogurts or ice cream. If those products did not have those emulsifiers then the ingredients would not stay together and it would taste horrible. Pinkberry didn't do anything wrong its just not natural and organic. Most emulsifiers are actually naturally derived and harmless. Fructose can come from honey and its the sweetest form of sugar so thats maybe why they use it…its better then using high fructose corn syrup. Its still ok to eat.

But we have got a TCBY and a Dairy Queen! But we all know those aren't healthy.. (But TCBY's treats are no sugar added or 98% fat free!)

fructose is a really common sugar additive….not really that big of a deal
and "emulsifiers" are pretty much just substances that isolate fat molecules and disperse them throughout a product
for example, emulsifiers ensure that fat products are evenly distributed throughout ice cream so that you dont get globs that taste like water, and other globs that taste like a big load of cream

dont get freaked out by words you dont recognize
      if anything, THAT is unhealthy

      139

Emulsifiers are NOT SCARY people! An emulsifier is there to maintain consistency, something difficult in a frozen low fat, or fat free item. They maintain homogenity in the consistency of things such as ice cream and froyo. They are found in nature and extracted from things such as kelp. Shame on you Perez for scaring people unnecessarily.

ps- lab produced flavors, colorings, and extracts are frequently safer and more reliable than naturally-derived ones. For example, would you rather have your pink lemonade colored with the extract of dead fruit fly shells or lab-produced pink dye???????

This kind of story gets taken out of context so easily if you don't have a basic knowledge of biochemistry… JUST BECAUSE SOMETHING IS MADE IN A LAB OR DOES NOT OCCUR NATURALLY does not mean it's bad or fattening or harmful or toxic or anything like that… it just means that they took an idea for a product.. improved it.. and found an efficient and SUSTAINABLE/REPEATABLE way of producing it in order to achieve maximum benefit with stringent quality control…. Making negative comments about any product of this kind WITHOUT ACTUALLY KNOWING WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT can only serve to hurt that product's bottom line (And a company you claim to love Perez…) Try to get informed before going public with this kind of thing!

What happened with the court trial about Pinkberry last year? That guy was going to sue them, claiming that the ingredients were NOT made up of milk and was not frozen yoghurt at all, but a powdered mix manufactured in the Far East and mixed with water, then frozen with added ingredients.

      180

perez, youre an idiot. first off - fructose is not a laboratory produced ingredient… fructose is sugar derived from fruit.

here is what maltodextrin is: While considered to be a carbohydrate, maltodextrin is understood to be more easily digested than some other forms of carbohydrates, leaving behind less of the potential for health issues. This can be especially important for an individual who is trying to manage their Type 2 diabetes with their diet. Usually made from rice, corn, or potato starch, maltodextrin is produced by cooking down the starch. During the cooking process, which is often referred to as a hydrolysis of starch, natural enzymes and acids help to break down the starch even further. The end result is a simple white powder that contains roughly four calories per gram, and extremely small amounts of fiber, fat, and protein.

look at my next post for the rest

and this is what emulsifiers are: in foods, any of numerous chemical additives that encourage the suspension of one liquid in another, as in the mixture of oil and water in margarine, shortening, ice cream, and salad dressing. Closely related to emulsifiers are stabilizers, substances that maintain the emulsified state. The consistency of food products may also be improved by the addition of thickeners, …

none of the stuff you have said is true … i mean emulsifiers are chemical additives but theyre found in A LOT of the foods we already eat. true, pinkberry isnt THAT good….ive had better here where i go to school (the yogurt tastes like actual yogurt…its amazing) and plus, pinkberry tastes very watered down.

      To Perez Hilton,

Our employees read your blog all the time and we thank you for your
interest in Pinkberry. However, we wanted to take a moment and clarify
some of the items in your post on our ingredients:

      * Pinkberry products are indeed nonfat frozen yogurt, are a good
source of calcium and meet the FDA's definition of "healthy" although we
do not market ourselves by making health claims. We simply focus on
providing a great customer experience - the best tasting frozen yogurt
      in an engaging environment.

      * Pinkberry frozen yogurt's main ingredients are skim milk and
nonfat yogurt with live and active cultures. As some of your commenter's
have already mentioned, our nonfat frozen yogurt contains a small amount
of FDA-approved stabilizers and emulsifiers to maintain the creamy
texture. There are no issues with the ingredients.
