Lars Ullrich, the drummer from Metallica, has hinted that they're thinking of pulling a Radiohead and giving away their material online for free!
The Metallica drummer told Rolling Stone magazine, "We're looking at how we can embrace everything. We want to be as free players as possible. We've been observing Radiohead and Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails) and in 27 years or however long it takes for the next record, we'll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the internet."
This is a shocking move, truly, cuz Metallica famously sued Napster in 2002 and Ullrich has traditionally been opposed to free distribution of their work.
It's a new world order in music. Gotta adapt to an always changing new set of rules to survive!
We're sure the Napster people are having a good chuckle today!

OMG.. Lars is such a whore. First, I read many years ago in an interview that Lars and James Hetfield bonded as teens TRADING MUSIC - that's right, copying records to tapes for each other. THEN… he has the gall to go after Napster like he did. The height of hypocrisy. I went to Metallica concerts, bought videos, and CDS, etc. Once they pulled this nonsense about shoving away technology, I refused to give them one penny more. And I never will. Rather than look at the emerging big picture, Metallica made the conscious decision to be hypocrits and money-hungry. Screw 'em.

Actually, Metallica has never been against free distribution of their music. They've had free downloads of shows on their websites for years and have always, since they started, allowed fans to record their concerts and share. They just didn't want people stealing and making a profit off of their albums, which they were told was happening. Looking back, it wasn't an awful thing to do. Do some frickin' reserach before you make posts.

I met Lars and the other members of Metcallica last weekend, and I must say, they're really great to their fans (Lars especially)!

They had a fan meet-and-greet last week, and people of ALL ages camped out for days just to meet them. And it's spelled 'Metallica' by the way. Jesus, at least know what you're talking about.
Well… Was he right about what he was fighting for? YES he was. At the time Napster was out CD burners were so expensive so that was not an issue but now you can buy them for $20 bucks. A blank CD you can buy for the price of a piece of gum. I know people who read this might think it's a joke but there are music stores going outta business. SAM THE RECORD MAN in Toronto had to shut it's doors after almost 50 years because of this whole internet business. In the end I can't say shit cause I download some music for free too but I also like to have an original copy if the album is good. Oh well talk shit about Lars but he was right…. Music will never be the same.

Lars was never against downloading music as a whole. He was just against people downloading the albums before they came out.
For all the defenders of Lars, and those who say he was right in suing Napster — no-one is objecting so much to his legal plight against Napster. The real problem is about his overall attitude towards the internet. I respect that he wanted to shut down an illegal song distributor like Napster, as I'm sure many others do. However, he has demonstrated an ignorance about the internet for almost a decade and has never once thought about taking an objective look at the issue.
For those staunch defenders, did you know that the internet as an exposure medium has a more powerful effect than many televised mediums? As far back as a few years ago, some bands released songs on the internet for exposure purposes, and guess what? They sold more CD's than if they had gone the traditional retail store route. They thought it out, and concluded that the internet was not as evil as the record companies were making it out to be. Guess what… they were right!
So, it's not so much about Lars' attack on Napster so much as it is about his willful and deliberate ignorance. And to come out now, without so much as admitting he was wrong, and announce the release of Metallica's music on the internet, just reeks of self-righteousness.

Metallica sued Napster for having a song (I Disappear) on the website and the band wasn't even finished WRITING IT. Christ, Lars has openly stated in prior interviews he has no problem with downloading, and even does it himself.
