Not for nothing, but court will appoint an attorney to represent the interest of a minor, especially when those around the child have shown an inability to exercise good judgment in that regard. They have to; most likely a statutory requirement & an appealable issue if not done.

Yes, the attorney looks after the child's rights, not what Mommy wants. This would have been all settled if James Brown did a will mentioning all the children he knew about (whether they get money or not) and disinherited anyone that might come out of the walls. This just doesn't happen to wealthy persons, this will feuding happens to many families that don't know what is in the will and/or feel left out. I think anyone who is there saying that he was their father should get a paternity test.

In GA Probate Court, Court appointed attorneys (Guardian ad litems) are usually paid out of estate funds if there's enough money. And in this case there probably is.

So, we don't have to worry about our tax $ being used on this. Instead, lawyers are getting richer and the family is getting less and less.

Look up the term Perez, and how they are compensated, when a minor has a monetary interest in an estate, trust, or personal injury matter, depending on the laws of the state.

Re: Lu – You got it partially right. A lot of attorneys act as guardian ad litems on cases and don't make squat. The interest of the child is being protected here from his alleged siblings and, perhaps, even his own mother. Not all lawyers are rich, contrary to popular belief. Check on the figures for median attorney income in Georgia, and you might be surprised how low it is.

Whenever a MINOR has MONEY TO GAIN OR LOSE through the COURT, an impartial, court-appointed attorney or representative is appointed by the judge to oversee their financial interests and, often times, make sure some or all of the money is reserved for the child until their adulthood. Actually, quite common for children to have an advocate or a court appointed attourney. This child has one to because in inheritence situations there is generally one to protect those under the age of 18. Also, done to provide that he has a level chance of receiving the same consideration as his "brothers" and "sisters".
