How is it unfair? Women weren't biting at the bit to be prom king. If anything, the peers who voted for him as prom queen are demeaning to him. Just because he's gay doesn't mean he's a woman. He's still rightly a king.

  4. Charlotte says – reply to this

I'm glad we dont have al that prom queen drama back here in Holland. Thank god!

  5. mICHELLE says – reply to this

I agree Perez, he SHOULD be allowed to run for prom queen, it is not fair that he is being discriminated against. The students voted him in and he is willing, so why not? I 110% agree that if they let a man win ms. legs and a girl win mr. physique he should get to vie for prom queen! I hope they let him go for it and I hope that he wins! Gay rights all the way!

  9. c says – reply to this

that does not suck! that makes sense! if hes that concerned he should try for prom king. the title of queen refers to a woman!

  10. wisconsin says – reply to this

    eh wisconsin. figures

  11. Jessica says – reply to this

So, why not run for prom king? Sounds like he has a lot of support from everyone anyhow. I think that'd be a wonderful way of getting the word out about being accepting to everyone, regardless of their orientation.

  12. Cornholio says – reply to this

The students did it to ridicule him and he's too stupid to figure it out.

So embarassed to be from Green Bay. Already wrote to the paper. Team Uriel!

  19. Kate says – reply to this

Why are you calling out all of Wisconsin? It's just one school. How about you change the subject to say "Hey Racine, Wisconsin!"

  20. Tim in Boston says – reply to this

Absolutely ridiculous. Oh well… it is a red state after all. Lame.

  21. aja says – reply to this

completely agree with Gwen. There is nothing wrong with a gay male winning a seat on the "Prom Court," but being gay doesn't make him a female. The other categories he mentioned speaking to physical qualities and are not sex-exclusive.

  22. WTF? says – reply to this

This is just unfortunate. I hate Racine.

  23. Kim says – reply to this

    1) Prom Kings and Queens can all kiss my fucking ass! It is so fucking stuiped !

As for a fag bag running for prom QUEEN! how gay is that

  24. Kaye says – reply to this

Why does he have to be Prom "Queen" just because he's gay??? Why can't he be prom "King" and be gay?? Let him beat out and take the title away from the other guys instead of taking it away from one of the girls. Honestly I would be pissed - not because he's gay, but because if there is a male Queen and male King its discriminating to the Girls - and we've come way too fucking far for that kind of bull shit.

  25. Sarah says – reply to this

That DOES NOT suck. And it IS fair.
A guy should not be given a female's position. It sounds like he was nominated as a way to attack him. They should have nominated him for a KING if they really wanted him to have a title.

  26. Danielle says – reply to this

I'm sure the administration is looking at it like.. Prom King is for a male and Prom Queen is for a female, at the end you get one of each. I don't see how its unfair. Just because he's gay doesn't mean he is a female… just as being a lesbian doesn't make you a male.

  27. niki says – reply to this

Eventhough he won't be on there for prom queen I think that they should all write his name on the ballots anyway.

  28. kayla says – reply to this

perez you're a dumbass - hes a MAN - he would have to be prom KING!!!!!! i am all about gay rights but this is crazy… why doesn't he just run for best in show at westminster?!!!?!?!??

  29. Ashley says – reply to this

Even though that sucks that the school is not letting him run, it's good to hear about a gay teen getting support from his peers, too often this isn't the case.

  30. kaya says – reply to this

    he's gay, perez, not female.

  31. I Know You Are But What Am I? says – reply to this

Oh yes this is fair. A queen is FEMALE. Always has been, always will. He needs to either change his gender real quick or shut up. We don't need to encourage this kind of militant behavior. Nor do we need to hear about anybody's sexual preference. Be discreet.

  32. GREAT STATE WISCONSIN says – reply to this

  33. WTF says – reply to this

  36. sta says – reply to this

Thank God some common sense and reason still exist.

  37. katie! says – reply to this

I'm all for gay rights, but the could have just nominated him for prom king just as easily. I don't it's as big a deal as others. He should just be happy that his peers are that supportive and accepting.. there are a lot of kids that don't get that.

  38. adsfajl; says – reply to this

    he's not a girl…

  39. Meeegan says – reply to this

Wisconsin is not a red state… but that was a great cop out for facing the real issue. Honestly, just because this guy is not being allowed to run for prom queen does not mean the school (or state for that matter) is homophobic. Did it occur to this guy at all that it has zero to do with him being gay? It is because he is male. So, if he wins prom queen, will his date be prom king? Why not just go with it that way or change the voting policies? Besides, they will do a write in and realize the majority of people in the school are against the idea.

  40. natalie says – reply to this

yeah, that sucks. northern wisconsin is more bigotted. southern wisconsin, not so much! i live in madison, and have a huge openly gay community here! i love it.

  41. viv says – reply to this

Dont call Wisconsin a lame state for this happening!!!!! Wisconsin was the FIRST state to pass into law anti discrimination laws based on sexual preference and the FIRST state to have hate crimes laws to protect gays and we have openly gay representatives in our state. An ignorant high school does not represent the whole state!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. WOW says – reply to this

How are any of you going to claim this BOY is being discriminated against because they won't let him run for prom QUEEN? That is a GIRL'S honor, and how is it fair to make the girls compete not only against other girls, but add guys to the mix? I'm all for gay rights, but this is ridiculous. It is a GIRL'S title and GIRLS should run for it. Its not fair to let a guy do it… ITS A GIRL THING jesus…. This is why people are so homophobic.. this kind of bullshit that goes too far.

  43. Jen#2 says – reply to this

Why is that wrong, If he identified as female than I would understand but this is a man regardless of his sexual orientation. He should be prom king if anything.

  44. YUP says – reply to this

    Re: Gwen – Cosign!!

  45. jessica says – reply to this

Run for prom king if it's so important.

  46. Like you're state is any better says – reply to this

It is totally fair. Heshould be up for king just like the rest of the guys. First gays want to be treated like everyone else (marriage, etc.) then you want special treatment (the right to run as prom queen, when no heterosexual guy would ever be allowed). Make up your minds, either you're just like everybody else, or you aren't, but stop asking for it both ways. And to the person that said "figures, Wisconsin," I've seen what other states have done to the gay population IE murdering and beating teens because they are gay. At least we have the tolerance here to put them on a prom ballot.

  47. Serita says – reply to this

I agree with them not letting him run. I graduated in 2000, and our prom king was gay. He ran for KING, not QUEEN. I don't understand what the hell this guy's problem is.

  48. Like you're state is any better says – reply to this

Also, Natalie, I can't believe you're from Wisconsin. Racine is not even close to nothern Wisconsin, and it actually further south than Madison. He is openly gay, and accepted, just not allowed to run for prom queen.

  49. brittany says – reply to this

hmm not everyone in Wi feels that way FYI. I certainly dont.

  50. tamra says – reply to this

I think the fact that his peers nominated him shows amazing acceptance. The adults getting all up in arms makes it look like there's something wrong, either with Uriel or being gay or whatever. I heard about this on the morning radio shows, and the kids didn't nominate him as a joke. I say leave them alone. It's an event for the kids, not the parents or teachers, and if this is what the kids want, more power to them.

  51. Emily says – reply to this

Wisconsin is NOT a red state and has not voted red in YEARS Boston. We'll be a blue state in '08 too thanks very much. Just because wisconsin is in the midwest doesn't make it backwards. In fact I enjoy living in a very liberal community.

  52. Brifee07 says – reply to this

I live in Racine and its a major issue
i think it would be wonderful i mean if a lesbian got nominated for king i would be all for it too
Think about it in todays society it should be acceptable
there are guys being maid of honors and girls being best man in weddings so why not to the gender switch in prom.
The only reson that this is such a big issue here in Racine is becasue Racine had a documentary a few years back as the Worlds Best Prom!
we have basically 2 proms in one night here one and the school and one down by the lakeshore for all the schools to come together. It is a very BIG deal here.

  53. No way says – reply to this

    He is probably illegal to.

  54. Cheesehead says – reply to this

That is one butt ugly fat beaner boy. Crown him Queen Of The Janitors.

  55. alum says – reply to this

First of all, Racine is not in Northern Wisconsin. I also attend UW Madison, and Racine is southeast of here, under an hour outside of Illinois. Also, Wisconsin is not a red state either.

Now that that is cleared up, I went to this high school (class of '04) and am so disappointed. Believe me, the school is not homophobic….we had openly gay people in my graduating class and they were accepted, as they should be.

If the administration in the school has changed that drastically I am really disappointed. It really was a great school when I was there, and it was not homophobic.

Lastly, even if it was homophobic, that's no reason to blame the entire state. It is not a red state, nor a homophobic state. In fact, Madison (go badgers!!) is one of the most liberal cities in the country, and has been at the forefront of civil rights movements for a long time.

  56. wisconsinbaby says – reply to this

Re: Tim in Boston – wisconsin is a blue state jack ass and has been for years. Wisconsin is pioneering in it's measures to protect gay rights. Just because it's the midwest doesn't make it backwards. and just because YOU'RE ignorant Boston doesn't make EVERYONE in Boston ignorant.

  57. Kate says – reply to this

Re: Tim in Boston – Actually, darling Timmy, Wisconsin is a blue state overall. It's definitely mixed (red is more in the Northern, rural parts, blue in the Southern, more populated parts), but is overall BLUE. Thanks for trying, jackass!

  58. Julie says – reply to this

  59. njgirl says – reply to this

just because u r GAY doesn't mean that it is unfair. That is ridiculous and the fact that it made the news is even stupider…seriously people get your priorities straight.
This is the confused fucked up world we live in, I honeslty think half of these gay teens aren't even gay, they just think its cool now because it is accepted.
    How fucking SAD!

  60. LuCKy* says – reply to this

Proms suck @ss anyway. When you leave high school you realize how stupid and trivial everything was.

  61. Joy says – reply to this

Re: natalie – I live in northeast wisconsin. Few biggots here. There are plently openly gay students at my daughters high school. Nobody gives those students a hard time. By the way Racine is south of Milwaukee. Thats southern WI.

  62. Erica says – reply to this

    Wisconsin is a BLUE state.

Anyway, I'm from La Crosse, WI, and I'm going to school in Green Bay. I'm a born and bred Cheesehead, and I've come to learn over my twenty years of living here that everybody over the age of about 40 is either a stubborn Norwegian, a hard-shelled German, or in most people's cases, a combination of both. It's the young people of the state who are trying to be progressive and change the rules that society has been pushing on them for years, but until the progressive, liberally minded people of my generation get a chance to actually be in the position to make the rules, stuff like this will keep going on.

  63. haha says – reply to this

one bullet will settle the argument

  64. promking says – reply to this

I won prom king, even though i was obviously gay. most people were cool and supportive, but there were some haters who had to belittle me by calling me a prom queen. he should not accept the nomination, the school admininstration did the right thing. he should be nominated as a king as opposed to encouraging the oppression of gay people and women. Why should he be moved into a different gender category just because he is gay? What is wrong with being a gay man and winning prom king? And regardless of the use of the word 'queen' in gay culture, they are just implying he is a woman in a derogatory manner.

  65. Aldous Huxley says – reply to this

Um, yeah…this has nothing to do with gay rights and everything to do with the fact that HE IS A DUDE! I really don't think that a straight guy would be allowed to run for prom queen either. This is the dumbest thing ever…why can't dude just run for prom KING? give me a break. dumbasses!

  66. 1st time mama says – reply to this

its really sad how people are handling the whole thing, our paper put the story on the front page of the paper.Which brings attention to the story and idea but the closed minded people around here are just crazy. go to the racine journal times website amd find the atricle it has all the comments on the bottem.every1 seems to understand but just doesnt think it is right.

  67. Samantha says – reply to this

I'm from an area near Racine, and sadly I'm not surprised by this at all. Even though my particular city is liberal it still seems that the overall area is conservative. Bummer :(

  68. Sara hey thats fam! says – reply to this

He got great support from peers but i do believe that he should just run for king he got all that support why not just for king i'm sure he'll win after all this attention and Racine isn't against gays when i've seen lesbians win prom queen and king here we ignore it! GO Uriel love ya cuz!

  69. Hollywood says – reply to this

It's an honor just to be nominated…

  70. Betty says – reply to this

    That's ridiculous!!!

  71. Bored says – reply to this

No one is saying he should not run, he just needs to run as Prom King. Which makes sense since, he is a BOY! It is not discrimination, it is common sense. I hate crap like this.

  72. Mary says – reply to this

It's Racine. The rest of the state (aka Madison) is very pro-gay. So much for Racine having a "unified" school district.

I originally thought this post would have to deal with the "Fair Wisconsin" voting debate, so I was surprised to read this.

  73. Allison says – reply to this

I suppose I can see where you're coming from, Perez, but I also agree with quite a few fellow people who responded that Uriel should simply be nominated as Prom King because it makes a lot more sense. I'm sure he'd win with no problem if he was under that category. Besides, if I was a girl who was on the ballot for Prom Queen and I lost to a guy, I think I'd be really bummed, even if I really liked the guy and supported him. Putting him into the "Queen" category actually sounds like kind of a degrading thing, anyways. And, for the record, I've heard of this happening A LOT, so why single out Wisconsin?

    Go Milwaukee! :)

  74. Pathetic says – reply to this

School boards are made up of jerk offs and old farts and soccer moms that are fucking…don't get me started….they are all afraid for change in anyway, even in their own lives. ewwwww

GAY TEEN, for QUEEN. He wants to be the QUEEN cause he's GAY. There are GAY TEENS. Gay teens kill themselves and are subject to bullying and endless torture. Why not let the kid be acknowledged? Stop the bullying! Anybody who has been bullied knows this is hell.

My husband and I got into a BIG fight when I read him this; he's on the side of the school. I, on the other hand, say let him run! It's absolutely ridiculous. The students nominated him, so why in the hell shouldn't he be able to do it? Obviously he is who they want. I say work it babe!

We were welcomed whole heartedly, in fact I was on court.(prince) Thanks for listening, I hope the kids gets to run, sounds kinda like James St. James's "Freak Show", oh Billie…..

  84. smledoc says – reply to this

I can't believe my state is making news for this!! I don't think he should be prom queen - But, i THINK IT'S SOME PROGRESS THAT A TEEN CAN BE OPENLY GAY IN HIGH SCHOOL!!! EQUAL RIGHTS FOR EVERYONE.

Re: Tim in Boston – Ahhhhh… We are a blue state for the most part. Thanks much!!

  86. pumpkin says – reply to this

Ummm, maybe because a Queen is a female and a King is a male? That could have a little something to do with it. These girls are only in high school once. How completely selfish for this guy to take away an opportunity for one of the girls to be Queen. I wasn't super popular in high school, but for some of these girls that are very involved in school and have a lot of friends, it can be a huge deal to them. How selfish.

  87. mona says – reply to this

Actually this is totally fair, if he ran for king and they didn't let him then that would not be fair. He's gay! Not a woman! There is a big difference. Gays just think the whole world is out against them. Do you think lesbians should be able to fun for prom King? That's about retarded!

  88. Karilynn says – reply to this

I am totally siding with the students! I live on the border of MN, right by WI, and they are all a bunch of homophobes over there for the most part.

  89. colonel sanders says – reply to this

These kids nominated him for prom "Queen" BECAUSE OF his sexual orientation. If I were a gay guy, that would really piss me off. I would be like: Just because I'm gay I can't be prom King? Why do you people have to make me a Queen just because I am gay. If the students really wanted to do something innovational and progressive, they would have nominated him King. The bottom line is that they are really just making fun of him.

  90. I agree!!! says – reply to this

Re: promking – Thank you for agreeing that this story is fair! HE'S A GUY BUT GAY, STILL A MAN REGARDLESS!

  91. vanessa says – reply to this

I dont think he should be discriminated against for being gay, no one should. BUT, why doesnt he just run from prom king then? I bet these cheese heads only voted him out of a joke for "queen". I wish him the best. I hope you have a good prom anyways!

  92. Alisa says – reply to this

Ha ha - that's cool! The school board is stupid for not letting him be Prom Queen if he wants to though! What's the big deal anyway? It's not like it's some major title. It's just Prom for God's sake!

  93. Aubrey says – reply to this

Re: Gwen – Right. I'm sure most of the people would vote for him just as a joke anyways. Why would he want that?

  96. formerraytownhussla' says – reply to this

Prom in Racine is an INSTITUTION and unlike any other prom in the country- believe me or watch the documentary! i think it would be AWESOME to see an openly gay prom king OR queen… LET THE STUDENTS SPEAK!!!

Love to all the hussla's back in raytown! WESTSIDE!

  97. Allie says – reply to this

oh my god, I go to college in milwaukee and have a lot of friends from racine. NOT COOL! I think that kid should be able to be prom queen.

  98. Cyd says – reply to this

I love how the comments on this thread are semi-civilized. Are all of the UW students procrastinating? (like me??) I love when I'm sitting in a pit class and the girl in front of me is browsing perez.

It's nice that the Racine school has a gay figure that can gain "popular support" with the students. There were several gay students at my central-ish school but all remained in the closet, and I think the entire student body could have benefited from them just being "out"…instead it remained "scandalous".

That being said, I'm at a loss for the situation — sure, the king and queen is gender based, but then where does it leave gay students? They'd have to completely revise the ballot to allow students to choose whether they preferred two kings or two queens or a king/queen combination, which I highly doubt would fly.

  99. Lynds says – reply to this

I don't think a male should be able to be nominated for prom queen - it would not be fair to have a guy win prom queen and king. Then you even have to go into the whole dance after the crowning…. I don't know many high school guys that would win prom queen would want to dance with another dude. The competitions that were stated in his argument can't even be considered because they are not gender specific competitions - I would be like a guy running for Miss Universe. I am all for gay rights, but I don't think this has anything to do with that. Seems like this all happened from a joke anyway and now it's just publicity.

  100. WisconsinGirl says – reply to this

I am from WI and I am from Racine. I did not attend Park. For anyone who hasn't heard of "The World's Best Prom" filmed here, we literally have a huge prom-it's like being on the red carpet of a movie premiere. Everyone tries to out-do everyone and I personally believe this is another case of it. I am by no means homophobic-I have several openly gay friends and family members. I understand that students nominated him, but it should be left at that. He should not be allowed to run. He is not being discriminated against for being gay, the school admins are just reserving the title for a female to be queen, as it should be! Nominate him for King! That is just as much as honor. If he didn't want to be nominated and does not care about being Queen, then drop it!
