How is it unfair? Women weren't biting at the bit to be prom king. If anything, the peers who voted for him as prom queen are demeaning to him. Just because he's gay doesn't mean he's a woman. He's still rightly a king.

I agree Perez, he SHOULD be allowed to run for prom queen, it is not fair that he is being discriminated against. The students voted him in and he is willing, so why not? I 110% agree that if they let a man win ms. legs and a girl win mr. physique he should get to vie for prom queen! I hope they let him go for it and I hope that he wins! Gay rights all the way!

So, why not run for prom king? Sounds like he has a lot of support from everyone anyhow. I think that'd be a wonderful way of getting the word out about being accepting to everyone, regardless of their orientation.

completely agree with Gwen. There is nothing wrong with a gay male winning a seat on the "Prom Court," but being gay doesn't make him a female. The other categories he mentioned speaking to physical qualities and are not sex-exclusive.

  24. Kaye says – reply to this
    24

Why does he have to be Prom "Queen" just because he's gay??? Why can't he be prom "King" and be gay?? Let him beat out and take the title away from the other guys instead of taking it away from one of the girls. Honestly I would be pissed - not because he's gay, but because if there is a male Queen and male King its discriminating to the Girls - and we've come way too fucking far for that kind of bull shit.

  25. Sarah says – reply to this
    25

That DOES NOT suck. And it IS fair.
A guy should not be given a female's position. It sounds like he was nominated as a way to attack him. They should have nominated him for a KING if they really wanted him to have a title.

  26. Danielle says – reply to this
    26

I'm sure the administration is looking at it like.. Prom King is for a male and Prom Queen is for a female, at the end you get one of each. I don't see how its unfair. Just because he's gay doesn't mean he is a female… just as being a lesbian doesn't make you a male.

  27. niki says – reply to this

  29. Ashley says – reply to this
    29

Even though that sucks that the school is not letting him run, it's good to hear about a gay teen getting support from his peers, too often this isn't the case.

  30. kaya says – reply to this
    30

    he's gay, perez, not female.

  31. I Know You Are But What Am I? says – reply to this
    31

Oh yes this is fair. A queen is FEMALE. Always has been, always will. He needs to either change his gender real quick or shut up. We don't need to encourage this kind of militant behavior. Nor do we need to hear about anybody's sexual preference. Be discreet.

  39. Meeegan says – reply to this
    39

Wisconsin is not a red state… but that was a great cop out for facing the real issue. Honestly, just because this guy is not being allowed to run for prom queen does not mean the school (or state for that matter) is homophobic. Did it occur to this guy at all that it has zero to do with him being gay? It is because he is male. So, if he wins prom queen, will his date be prom king? Why not just go with it that way or change the voting policies? Besides, they will do a write in and realize the majority of people in the school are against the idea.

  40. natalie says – reply to this
    40

yeah, that sucks. northern wisconsin is more bigotted. southern wisconsin, not so much! i live in madison, and have a huge openly gay community here! i love it.

  41. viv says – reply to this
    41

Dont call Wisconsin a lame state for this happening!!!!! Wisconsin was the FIRST state to pass into law anti discrimination laws based on sexual preference and the FIRST state to have hate crimes laws to protect gays and we have openly gay representatives in our state. An ignorant high school does not represent the whole state!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. WOW says – reply to this
    42

How are any of you going to claim this BOY is being discriminated against because they won't let him run for prom QUEEN? That is a GIRL'S honor, and how is it fair to make the girls compete not only against other girls, but add guys to the mix? I'm all for gay rights, but this is ridiculous. It is a GIRL'S title and GIRLS should run for it. Its not fair to let a guy do it… ITS A GIRL THING jesus…. This is why people are so homophobic.. this kind of bullshit that goes too far.

  43. Jen#2 says – reply to this

    45

Run for prom king if it's so important.

  46. Like you're state is any better says – reply to this
    46

It is totally fair. Heshould be up for king just like the rest of the guys. First gays want to be treated like everyone else (marriage, etc.) then you want special treatment (the right to run as prom queen, when no heterosexual guy would ever be allowed). Make up your minds, either you're just like everybody else, or you aren't, but stop asking for it both ways. And to the person that said "figures, Wisconsin," I've seen what other states have done to the gay population IE murdering and beating teens because they are gay. At least we have the tolerance here to put them on a prom ballot.

  47. Serita says – reply to this
    47

I agree with them not letting him run. I graduated in 2000, and our prom king was gay. He ran for KING, not QUEEN. I don't understand what the hell this guy's problem is.

  48. Like you're state is any better says – reply to this
    48

Also, Natalie, I can't believe you're from Wisconsin. Racine is not even close to nothern Wisconsin, and it actually further south than Madison. He is openly gay, and accepted, just not allowed to run for prom queen.

  49. brittany says – reply to this

hmm not everyone in Wi feels that way FYI. I certainly dont.

  50. tamra says – reply to this
    50

I think the fact that his peers nominated him shows amazing acceptance. The adults getting all up in arms makes it look like there's something wrong, either with Uriel or being gay or whatever. I heard about this on the morning radio shows, and the kids didn't nominate him as a joke. I say leave them alone. It's an event for the kids, not the parents or teachers, and if this is what the kids want, more power to them.

  51. Emily says – reply to this
    51

Wisconsin is NOT a red state and has not voted red in YEARS Boston. We'll be a blue state in '08 too thanks very much. Just because wisconsin is in the midwest doesn't make it backwards. In fact I enjoy living in a very liberal community.

  52. Brifee07 says – reply to this
    52

I live in Racine and its a major issue
i think it would be wonderful i mean if a lesbian got nominated for king i would be all for it too
Think about it in todays society it should be acceptable
there are guys being maid of honors and girls being best man in weddings so why not to the gender switch in prom.
The only reson that this is such a big issue here in Racine is becasue Racine had a documentary a few years back as the Worlds Best Prom!
we have basically 2 proms in one night here one and the school and one down by the lakeshore for all the schools to come together. It is a very BIG deal here.

First of all, Racine is not in Northern Wisconsin. I also attend UW Madison, and Racine is southeast of here, under an hour outside of Illinois. Also, Wisconsin is not a red state either.

Now that that is cleared up, I went to this high school (class of '04) and am so disappointed. Believe me, the school is not homophobic….we had openly gay people in my graduating class and they were accepted, as they should be.

If the administration in the school has changed that drastically I am really disappointed. It really was a great school when I was there, and it was not homophobic.

Lastly, even if it was homophobic, that's no reason to blame the entire state. It is not a red state, nor a homophobic state. In fact, Madison (go badgers!!) is one of the most liberal cities in the country, and has been at the forefront of civil rights movements for a long time.

Re: Tim in Boston – wisconsin is a blue state jack ass and has been for years. Wisconsin is pioneering in it's measures to protect gay rights. Just because it's the midwest doesn't make it backwards. and just because YOU'RE ignorant Boston doesn't make EVERYONE in Boston ignorant.

    Wisconsin is a BLUE state.

Anyway, I'm from La Crosse, WI, and I'm going to school in Green Bay. I'm a born and bred Cheesehead, and I've come to learn over my twenty years of living here that everybody over the age of about 40 is either a stubborn Norwegian, a hard-shelled German, or in most people's cases, a combination of both. It's the young people of the state who are trying to be progressive and change the rules that society has been pushing on them for years, but until the progressive, liberally minded people of my generation get a chance to actually be in the position to make the rules, stuff like this will keep going on.

    64

I won prom king, even though i was obviously gay. most people were cool and supportive, but there were some haters who had to belittle me by calling me a prom queen. he should not accept the nomination, the school admininstration did the right thing. he should be nominated as a king as opposed to encouraging the oppression of gay people and women. Why should he be moved into a different gender category just because he is gay? What is wrong with being a gay man and winning prom king? And regardless of the use of the word 'queen' in gay culture, they are just implying he is a woman in a derogatory manner.

  65. Aldous Huxley says – reply to this

Um, yeah…this has nothing to do with gay rights and everything to do with the fact that HE IS A DUDE! I really don't think that a straight guy would be allowed to run for prom queen either. This is the dumbest thing ever…why can't dude just run for prom KING? give me a break. dumbasses!

It's Racine. The rest of the state (aka Madison) is very pro-gay. So much for Racine having a "unified" school district.

  73. Allison says – reply to this
    73

I suppose I can see where you're coming from, Perez, but I also agree with quite a few fellow people who responded that Uriel should simply be nominated as Prom King because it makes a lot more sense. I'm sure he'd win with no problem if he was under that category. Besides, if I was a girl who was on the ballot for Prom Queen and I lost to a guy, I think I'd be really bummed, even if I really liked the guy and supported him. Putting him into the "Queen" category actually sounds like kind of a degrading thing, anyways. And, for the record, I've heard of this happening A LOT, so why single out Wisconsin?

    Go Milwaukee! :)
