David Schmidthuber went turkey hunting with his 14-year-old son in Oldham County, Kentucky, this past weekend.
His son Steven got separated from his father about 30 minutes after entering the woods.
That's when police say the father mistook his son for a turkey and shot him!!!!!
We're serious.
The son passed away due to the shot.
According to police, no charges are expected to be filed.
We just can't even begin to imagine what that would do to a person: KILLING your own son.

Dear parents: please please please please PLEASE keep your children safe at home when you go hunting or will be using firearms.

When the Constitution was written, for those gun lovers who know nothing about the 16th and 17th centuries in our country, the founding fathers wanted to make sure the people of the country could bear arms in the even of a rogue government and its rogue army. The right to bear arms was a serious and proper measure THEN to assure that the people in our new, rugged, rural land could defend themselves in the event of a government gone awry. NOT so punk fathers could fucking own guns and mistake their kid for a deer. Not so gangsters could own AK47's and blow away their supposed enemies. I for one would LOVE a rewrite on this amendment once and for all. I am not worried about a rogue government or its army. I am worried about my fucking odd ball neighbor. And maybe that's you.

Maybe stupid people shouldn't take their kids hunting. I went hunting with my father, and so did all my siblings when we were growing up, and we managed to avoid getting shot. We make a conscious decision every day to eat meat, to go hunting, etc. Animals act by instinct alone. They cannot be blamed for their actions.

Miniscule??? There is certainly nothing miniscule about the war and bloodshed that has occurred and continues to occur around the world. Societies in which guns are not permitted have more than their share of violence and bloodshed. And more often than not these violent conflicts do not have to do with fighting for freedom - people fight and murder each other over territorial border disputes, ethnic disputes, and religious disputes. It's really quite ridiculous to pin American society as being exceptionally violent with everything that goes on outside of America. It might make you feel better to take the guns away from "everybody in America" but keep in mind that non-Americans in countries around the world slaughter each other (and not on a miniscule scale) in societies where guns are not permitted.

Um…there is nothing wrong with taking your children hunting. Most people who hunt and have guns are very very responsible with their firearms. We just hear stories like this and get nutty. It is very sad, but frankly, it wasn't the gun's fault it was the high/drunk father. Anyone with a brain would have to acknowledge that you shouldn't go hunting under the influence. We should ban alcohol before guns, if you want to start "banning" things that kill. Then we will ban cars, and how about swimming pools? I'm not blaming it on the kid that he got shot, but he and his father both should have been following hunter safety rules. I am from SC and hunting is just a way of life for lots of people in this area. I personally don't get why parent's take their son's out to do this. I think it is irresponsible and (obviously!) incredibly dangerous! Accidents happen every day and it isn't possible to prevent them - so why engage in activities that when these accidents do occur, they will be most likely LETHAL. I don't personally get hunting at all - but parent's need to leave the kids out of it. Perhaps there need to be laws that prohibit kids from hunting. Let the child grow up and THEN decide on his on if carrying around a gun and shooting animals is what they want to do, or not- but let them decide on their own when they are old enough to understand the implications and the RISKS! Be responsible people!

Last week in my town of St. Albans, WV, a sixteen year old high school student was killed by another hunter while turkey hunting. The boy who shot him was only 19. His parents became worried when he did not return home on time. He was found dead in the woods by his father and 9 year old brother. So sad.

I can't comment on the sense in taking your son hunting with you, but I know for a fact that David (dad) was NOT on any substance when this happened. I think Perez was referring to an earlier case with a 9 year old. David's son was 14. The wake was yesterday. The family is devastated. Please have some respect.

Re: suzy – Not everyone is so careless. My husband takes my seven yr old son to the shooting range with him to teach him gun safety as well as how to shoot a gun. I think my son is too young to be going hunting right now but he will know how to handle a firearm when he is old enough. I would much rather have my husband teach him the correct way than for him to not be allowed to touch a gun and get curious and take it upon himself. We keep our guns locked up and my son knows not to handle a firearm unless my husband or myself are present. My husband travels a lot with his job and I for one feel so much safer having protection here that I know how to use than I would not having it and having to rely on police that don't necessarily get to the situation in time. That's my two cents…take it or leave it.

the dad was in possession of alchohol and drugs, and he was trespassing when i
honestly, it sounds to me he thought this would be a good excuse after seeing the first guy who shot his own son thinking it was turkey.. a careful dad wouldn't take his son turkey hunting after what happened to the first guy, and if he did, he wouldn't shoot what he can't see, specially after the son is missing. to me, it smells like a planned crime.
