The latest film directed by the "mysterious" Wachowski brothers, Speed Racer, might not do as well as hoped for in the box office this weekend.
The BIG budget movie will open this Friday in about 3,600 screens across the U.S.
Unfortunately for the film, it's been receiving very unimpressive ratings in its pre-release surveys.
So will Iron Man win at the box office this weekend again?
Last weekend, Iron Man made over $100 million!
At the moment, Speed Racer seems like it will gross about $25-$35 million during its opening weekend, though it might gross more. But, estimates are low.
This is a BIG disappointed considering how much it cost to make the race car comic book adaptation - well over $100 million, easily.
So, even if Iron Man makes only half of what it did last weekend, it's still likely to come in first again and beat out Speed Racer.
Ouch!
Warner Bros. domestic distribution president, Dan Fellman, says, "It's too early to tell. But this is the first real family movie of the summer, and we're going to give it our best."
Translation: "We're fucked. And we know it!"
But more importantly, will U go watch?

I notice any survey Perez posts, that whatever the topic is, everyone will vote opposite. In other words, "is the sky blue? " and majority will vote "NO". "Are clouds white?" the majority will vote "NO".

I think the *&^% it good, Speed Racer's animation was cheap and that added to the quality of the cartoon. The movie went so over the top that it's just horrible it isn't simplistic it just part of the inundated visual society that we are a part of. It not visually striking to me it's just doing what everybody else is doing.

It looks like they made this flick for the Tween set — and should have gone with a less kiddie feel. It looks totally stupid — and I was a fan of the original show.

It's actually really good. I enjoyed it as an art piece. It is really different from anything else I've seen. I love the way it is edited… the characters and props swiping the screen. hands down one of the worst movies i have ever seen.
the more previews that i see for speed racer, the more i am turned off from the movie. i think that the goal was to keep the movie as animated as possible without it actually being an animated film, but i don't think that the idea translated well.i think iron man will come out on top again this weekend.

It is rumored that a Twilight trailer will be included in the previews, and Twilight fans are diehard obsessed. Expect more people to go for that reason alone.

I had high hopes for this, but just the commercials alone are cheesy CGI and so much color they give me a head ache.

I saw a prescreening of the movie two days ago, and it was one of the best movies I've seen in years. It's poprocks for the eyes, surreal and over the top. I will admit that it was in part written for kids (hence the reason Hot Wheels had displays set up for the kids to play with outside the theater), but you can say the same for most "childish" flicks that can appeal to grown-ups as well. It's definitely acted in a campish way, but in the end, it is well written and definitely pays homage for the original cartoon. Recommended!

Not planning on watching this at all… why? Who the fuck decided it would be a good idea to cast Emile Hirsch in the title role?? Seriously???? He's a good actor, but he does not fit this character at ALL! That's definitely a main factor that I believe is causing people to find it difficult to garner an interest in going to see this project. Bad BAD BAAADD CASTING CHOICE!

I went to the screening last night with my friend who interns at Warner Brothers, and the movie is kick ass….at first i didnt even want to go but i am glad i did. if you think it looks bad, go see it because you will most likely change your mind. the colors are vivid and the action is hot…go see this movie if you are free this weekend, its amazing…the Wachowski brother and sister did a good job on this film.
I might not go see it this weekend but I'm definitely gonna check it out. I'm dying to see how they made that shiteous cartoon into a movie.

Saw it last night. It's good, and it's dazzling, and it actually has heart. This is what I hate about these days, a movie gets slaughtered before it even OPENS. Give it a chance. I highly doubt that many people will be that disappointed by the film.

They are not the"Wachowski brothers" any more. One of them is a tranny. This is another excuse for the man-children to fetishize over the another bit of minutiae of their youth.
They fucked up by marketing it to "families." I saw a preview for it and they must have said the word "family" 50 times (okay maybe only 15), but they completely alienated their biggest audience - kids who used to actually watch that show and who now have money and are in their late 20's… they're the ones who have the money to spend on a movie. Families are spending their money on gas and bills - not movies.
I WOULD go see it, but Emile Hersh is in it so it would be like going to fuck a cock you thought looked nice when it was hard (the effects), but it ends up being a limp waste skin (Emile). No thanks!

I just want to point out…
Box Office Forecasters are expecting Speed Racer to pull in something in the $35-45 million range. The very same people are calling for a $45-55 million weekend for Iron Man. So, I'm not sure where these $25-35 million estimates are coming from since $35 million seems to be on the low end of expectations.
While the edge goes to Iron Man to be #1 again this weekend, it's likely not going to be total domination by one movie over the other.
But still, even with these "corrected" figures available, Speed Racer will likely not be a huge hit and will make little profit, if any at all. Just saying…
