"Serious" Actress

Ellen Page (aka Juno, the preggers teen) has been cast to play Jane Eyre in a BBC Film adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's classic piece of English lit.

She nabs an Oscar nom and now she's getting all high brow and shiz!

The BBC adaptation is being produced by one of the producers of The Other Boleyn Girl.

We're not too sure about this casting choice. We hope Ellen can pull the Jane Eyre part off!

Ellen is a great actress. She did a large handful of other great films before Juno. Her range is large. I expect her to be just as great in this as in her other films in this or anything she does. Just be thankful we have a talented young artist who has a great, grounded head on her shoulders.

What makes her so perfect for Jane Eyre? Can someone please give some specific reasons? Sorry, I'm just not seeing it. That's one of my favorite books, and I have never seen Ellen Page play a role that makes me think she can capture the essence of Jane's character.

i think the casting is pretty much perfect jayne eyre was plain and i think mousy (a level english a bit foggy!) just hope she doesn't ravish the accent! she's an awsome actress juno was the best movie i've seen in a long while! i think you have to worry about the producers…the other bolyen girl sucked big style! nowhere near as good as the book! i even turned it off half way through coz it was so bad! my mates (who have also read the book) agreed as well!

    48. minnie says – reply to this

      48

i have nothing against this chick but there's no way Jane Eyre could be portrayed by anyone else but a BRITISH ACTRESS; i mean, common' the accent has to be British. there's no way i'm gonna get into it otherwise.

This is my favorite book and I am really nervous about her playing Jane. I have seen several other film versions and I just don't know if she can do it! I have high hopes, though. They also just made an adaptation of 'Jane Eyre' last year. I wonder why the BBC is making another one?

    54. Sandra says – reply to this

Oh blah! I'd like to see how bad she'll bee. She has NO range. The last two films she basically played her self. She's like Jennifer Anniston, and can only do one type of roll not that far off from their real personalities.

      56

Finally they pick an actress to play Jane who is the same size and looks similar to the character in the book. I read Jane Eyre about 10 times when I was 12. It was the first romance novel! There are some great biographies of Charlotte Bronte out there. She was teeny tiny and only had a couple of teeth. I think a better movie could be made about the story of Charlotte Bronte!

    57. Brontes says – reply to this

      57

That no-talent bitch is going to ruin my most favorite book ever? Skank! Why couldn't they get Kate Beckinsale or Keira Knightly? They probably couldn't afford to have anyone with actual talent or a REAL British accent. ,,,sigh

    60. publicity says – reply to this

      60

This was obviously a casting choice done more for added interest to the project due to Paiges warm moment in the spotlight. It was not made in thoughts of what woule be good service to the filming of a book addaptation. She may be a young talent , but she is not yet ready to pull the weight of Bronte. Her parfomances are of the more juvenile obviously. It is a shame that they are taking such a step back with this literary work filming with stunt casting. This is a classic work , too bad they did not feel the film could stand on it's own and chose such an unworthy and unaffecting leading actress. It will be the first time Jane has been played by such a droll, modern quipping sassy brat ( this is how her presence comes across on film, regardless of how earthy she presents herself to the media). Let's hope her ability to act will be proven with this. Nothing she has done in the past even comes close to what she will need to do to pull this one off. There is no choice but to remain apprehensively dissapointed in this choice until proven otherwise. How sad.

I'm pretty sure Ellen could pull it off in a heartbeat. I mean, does Hard Candy ring a bell? What about Mouth to Mouth? Wilby Wonderful? Marion Bridge? An American Crime? Oh right! You probaby have only seen Juno like many other ~fans. Ellen is a serious actress. Just because she does ONE black comedy does not disqualify her as being such.

    67. Stephanie says – reply to this

      67

I'm not doubting her abilities as an actress, but this announcment is disappointing to me. The BBC just did an adapatation of Jane Eyre in 2006 and it was flawless and the best adaptation of the novel I have ever seen! Ruth Wilson, who played Jane, was the best Jane. I really don't think this will work out as a film, because I have been disappointed in all other FILM adaptations. The reason the BBC miniseries works is, not only its AMAZING casting, but its ability to tell the entire story in the extended runtime. I'm hoping for the best, but I really don't see how anyone could do a better job than what they created back in 2006.

Re: Brontes – She's Canadian. Her last name Page even sounds British. Besides, I don't see Americans kicking off all the British import actresses and hiring American actresses while they whine about them not having a 'real' American accent. Pffft. Acting is acting, it's not like someone trying to crash the Royal family, oh smarmy one.

Jane is "small" and "plain", with a lot of common sense and yearning for love. I think Ellen Page would be perfect for the part.

Only prob I see is they keep doing remakes…there was just a great one done by the BBC about 2 years ago with Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson.

By the way, Toby Stephens is yummy Perez.

Have you even read Jane Eyre? She is perfect casting; Jane was "small and plain" according to Charlotte Bronte.
