"Serious" Actress

Ellen Page (aka Juno, the preggers teen) has been cast to play Jane Eyre in a BBC Film adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's classic piece of English lit.

She nabs an Oscar nom and now she's getting all high brow and shiz!

The BBC adaptation is being produced by one of the producers of The Other Boleyn Girl.

We're not too sure about this casting choice. We hope Ellen can pull the Jane Eyre part off!

She was decent in hard candy, sucked on snl and juno was gay. But I'd still let her lick my butt hole.

yet another american trying to do a "british" accent. As if Scarlett Johanssen's attempt wasn't shocking enough. Why can't they find a good British accent to do a British role?

She's a good actress…I so bet she can pull it off. Ellen Page was amazing in Juno, and who saw Hard Candy? It was disturbing, put her performance was so freaking good I doubt she could let this role down.

Re: helen – Are you British? Should I say, yet another British person who can't be bothered to find out if a person is Canadian or American?

I really don't understand why Americans playing British people pisses people off so much. We just had a bunch of Brits playing the American founding fathers in "John Adams" and we didn't complain. Granted, they were around when it was the British colonies but still. Practically half the cast of "Band of Brothers" was British and most of us had nothing but praise for them. Isn't Liam Neeson (Irish) playing Lincoln? I'm sure he'll do great. As long as a person is convincing in a role, I don't care where they're from.

Have any of you read Jane Eyre? How does playing the part of a teenage vigilante who cuts off

Um, because Perez was questioning her ability to play a "serious" role.

    18. jennniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii says – reply to this

      118

page has an extremely deep voice for a woman, and based on what i saw on snl, she doesn't have a feminine bone in her body. she can play a tomboy well, but that's about it. jane eyre may have been small, and plain, but she was feminine in every sense of the word. i will not be seeing this film with page in the role.

are you kidding me? ELLEN PAGE IS THE BOMB FO SHIZZ!! you obviously havent seen her in action. she's one of the best actress of our generation..that is for the future and shizz

    20. anon says – reply to this

      120

yawn. the bbc has done this one to death, this is just a ploy to cash in on her flavour of the month status. can't see her pulling off the understated character at all. Americans aren't as good with the British dramas, wish they'd leave it alone.

I just got around to seeing Juno, and barely! got! through it! I think Ms. Page is scarcely believable as an actress - I think she delivered some overly crafted hipster lines in a snarky manner. She comes off as being full of herself. She is cute, though, and Xeno only knows she'll get more roles thrown at her because of her perky tits - I mean personality. Be interesting to see if she jumps out of the machine "They" have been been forcing her into and tries a real role… Juno felt like it tried TOOO hard. And don't get me started on "Hard Candy"… I had to keep switching that POS off.

Just curious: Is there anyone on here who just really doesn't give a flying squirt if they're FIRST on here? WTF is up with that? Are you guys five? That is all…

      Re: RIDICULOUS
…because fucking ENGLAND is such an overlooked little underdog of a country and, you know, needs recognition…

      Yeah, hardly.

THE WORLD KNOWS WHAT THE HELL ENGLAND IS! Stop being so damn insecure.

Ellen Page is Canadian. If you're gonna argue recognition, Canada sure could use the recognition more than fucking ENGLAND. Oh and I'm sure you really care about all those poor little actresses.

      136

I understand you probably don't have time to read books, what with all the celebrity cock you suck, Perez, but try reading Jane Eyre before jumping to conclusions. For someone who is most famous for drawing cum on celebrity whore's faces and an apparent obsession with the letter "z" and misspellings, I'm going to guess reading is not your strong suit. So just watch Ellen Page's other work. Hard Candy is a far cry from Juno. Not every single actress is a talentless cum dumpster, just most of them.

      137

She better have a good fucking British accent, or I will be terribly disappointed. Jane Eyre can't have a bad accent, and she CANNOT have an American accent.

      Re: Carrie

I'm English. Sorry, I had meant to write north american but I forgot the north. I similarly don't like it when Brits play americans. Regardless of how good an actress she is, when people start referring to the accent they have to master as "British" I assume they are going to be bad. There is no "British" accent. Scarlett Johanssen just sounded like Dick Van Dyke in the Other Boleyn Girl. Portman got closer, but still no cigar. It's just really insulting that the BBC, to whom we pay all our licensing fees, can't even find some home grown talent to star in Jane Eyre. If it were any other broadcaster, I wouldn't be so fussed. But since the British Broadcasting Corporation gets all our money from our licenses and some of our taxes too, you would have thought they could be more loyal to British actresses. I wouldn't expect you to understand if you're not British though.

      143

she was actually QUITE the actress in juno. she was so good at being a dryly cynical 16-year-old, in fact, that most people don't give her much credit.

i agree with missmeow — this casting is PERFECT!

    44. ElsieB23 says – reply to this

      144

Helen- i dunno, Renee Zellweger did a pretty good accent in Bridget Jones. I'm a brit and agree that it is a tad annoying when americans are cast in British roles in british films, but if they can execute it then fair enough. I personally though Natalie and Scarlett were great in the other Boleyn girl. People have said keira Knightly should have played ann rather than Natalie portman, but natalie is the better actress be a mile (think Keira gets too preoccupied with doing that annoying pouting thing with her mouth to remember how to act…)

UGH why are they making another film adaptation of Jane Eyre? One was released a few years ago and it was the best so far. No need to make another one. :/

    55. cecilia says – reply to this

      155

She's cute and funny, but this is probably not a good part for her. Jane Eyre is a classic character, and not just anyone can play her. Ellen can't top Ruth Wilson in the PBS version, who was essentially flawless.

    56. jackie says – reply to this

      156

ew she ruines everything. this is my favorite book of all time and she has NO sparkle and does not deserve to play this part. i'd LOVE to hear her with a british accent and not acting like a sarcastic know it all bitch.

They just did a newer adaption of Jane eyre for the BBC back in 05 or 06! Why another one? there are more re-makes of that story then there are prequels and sequels to Star Wars!

bottom line: Another one is not needed!

      Re: AWP

So happy to see another J.E 2006 fan on here! I actually ended up buying it on Amazon I loved it so much.

It really was such an incredible version. It was able to do what so many of the other adaptions havent been able to do because of time constraints. Though, I dont think its just the length that makes this movie total greatness - its the cast. They were simly incredible.

Toby's Mr Rochester is now only second on my "list" to Richard Armitage's Mr. Thorton from North and South (If you havent seen it - do it now.) And to think, I once thought I would stay forever loyal to Colin Firth's Mr Darcy.
