Blaming Arnold

Filed under: TV News > Politik > Arnold Schwarzenegger

arnold.jpg

It's been u-g-l-y on the set of Ugly Betty since the suits announced on Tuesday that the show is moving its production to New York City.

And, according to reports, the 300 production people who are losing their jobs because of the move blame California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

New York passed a host of new new tax credits to lure more showbiz productions — Ugly Betty took the bait and is headed their way.

Many argue that the Governator has not done much to save and/or grow California's showbiz production business.

Unfortunately, there are small business owners like dry cleaners, caterers, construction supply folk who will be financially crippled by Ugly Betty's move to NYC. These vendors have banded together to buy a one page ad in Variety, the entertainment industry's trade paper, on behalf of the soon-to-be unemployed folks as a show of support and to help call attention to changes that need to be made at the state level for their own sake.

Here's what the ad appearing in Variety will say:

To Whom it Should Concern
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Members of the State Senate and State Assembly, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the Los Angeles City Council, and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors:

We are writing to you because we just lost our jobs. We are the 300 plus members of the crew of the television show Ugly Betty. We were informed this Tuesday that the production of our show is moving to New York primarily because of the 35% tax incentives being offered by the state of New York. Instead of making good wages and paying our fair share of California state income tax, we will all be collecting Unemployment Benefits. In addition, we will certainly be cutting our spending back to the bone, which will not only cut back our sales tax contributions substantially, but it could end up costing the jobs of the people who provide services and products to us. Not only are these crew positions being lost; all of our local vendors are losing our business.

Our production buys: lumber, paint, wallpaper, cabinets, other building materials, office products, fabric, art supplies, computer equipment, food, beverages, flowers, film, makeup & hair products, wigs, insurance, jewelry, clothing, etc.

Our production rents: lighting equipment, sound equipment, video playback equipment, heavy machinery, office equipment, backdrops, costumes, furniture, scenery, props, soundstages, offices, parking facilities, cars, trucks, storage facilities, computers, camera equipment, grip equipment, editing equipment, drafting equipment, cell phones, computers, toilets, dumpsters, live plants, production trailers, tools, hardware, artwork, walkie talkies, etc.

Our production also uses the services of: dry cleaners, printers, location companies, Special Effects companies, utilities, caterers, payroll services, restaurants, security, Post Production Services, Clearance Houses, etc.

When we shoot on locations around Los Angeles we pay for permits; we pay homeowners & businesses for the use of their property, we hire police and fire department personnel, we pay for facility engineers, etc.

So, while the loss of our individual positions may be insignificant, the loss of this production is staggering. Now multiply this by all the other productions going to New York, New Mexico, Illinois, Louisiana, North Carolina and other states with incentives, not to mention Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Eastern Europe, etc. and the cost to the California state economy is monumental. We implore you to do everything in your power to level the playing field and bring our jobs back to California by enacting meaningful incentives to keep film and television production in our state.

Sincerely yours
The Crew of Ugly Betty

Word!

We're sure Arnie will hear you loud and clear now!

God forbid any other States or ("even Canada") should benefit from all the economic support a prodoction like Ugly Betty provides. I think it's rediculous to think that Arnold should be spending his time to keep showbusiness going in California . . . I mean, seriously, is California really suffering from a lack of show business money?!

The State Legislature and the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors are the ones to blame. Arnold only signs the bills and resolutions passed through the committees of the legislature. If the Legislature doesn't send the Govenor an economic or tax reduction package….he can't sign the bill.

The county supervisors could pass an economic stimulus package….problem is that Los Angeles is having huge economic problems. It's a vicious cycle. They need the show biz jobs but they can't afford to cut taxes and now the show biz jobs leave taking their pay base with them.

This is stupid!! This industry has been on strike for the better part of the last 8 months and now has another strike pending. When it came to keeping the fat cats fat, those poor employees were ignored. Now, I find it really hard to blame Conan the Distroyer in Cali. for something politicians in New York are doing. California is still the 2nd most imortant entertainment city in this country. Looks like LA was just put in it's place.

People can't have it both ways-they want the rich to pay the higher taxes so the middle class can get a break but when that happens, everyone freaks out when jobs are lost because of it. This is just the beginning. After the election, more and more companies will be paying higher taxes and have to relocate-to another country. Who exactly do these people want to pay the higher taxes?the rich own the businesses that keep us going. Get a clue people!

Who gives a shit? Like there aren't enough shows an dmovies in California that these people can't find other jobs. And I'm sure the incendiary businesses they mention are really going to be crippled by one show leaving CA. Idiots.

If their businesses are going to be "crippled" by the departure of Ugly Betty…then they probably weren't much of a business in the first place. Ugly Betty has only been on the air for a few years - what did these businesses do before that? Shows come and go all the time - get over it.

Re: Jones – Great points Jones! It's just oh so easy to blame the republican as always. Ugly Betty is one show, apparently the people associated with it think it's the main livilihood of Los Angeles. Notice they immediately refer to having to go on unemployment? Hey if you are so valuable, surely you can immediately find another job.
Someone pointed out he has cut fundings for schools and there will be less college classes in the fall, once again look at the state legislature to that and why do you feel entitled to a college education? You want a college education, pay for it! This disgusting sense of entitlement people feel is why the economy sucks so bad.

I'm sure if he did more for the entertainment industry in California, he would be accused of favoritism and some other dumb bullshit by anyone who's not involved in the industry. Plus it's your states own damn fault for hiring an actor as a governor. Maybe next time, elect an economist.

Those people can go fuck themselves! They are the same liberal assholes who want everyone else taxed into the poorhouse to pay for all their welfare programs and to fight global warming and finance free education for illegal immigrants. They are one of the biggest industries in California…how the fuck do they think they shouldn't be taxed? But if you're some poor mom and pop dry cleaner or newstand, barely making a living, YOU should be taxed to the highest level?! Eat shit and die Ugly Betty.

  30. #30 - Ratta ! says – reply to this

Movies and tv shows that PRETEND to be New York, but aren't, are a bunch of phonies. It's an insult to the viewers intelligence and does not support the city they are exploiting. If you are gonna bank on the glamour of NYC, at least give the city that was once booming with production jobs, some actual business. A few stock image scenes thrown in doesn't make for anything authentic.

  31. #31 - ralph cirella sux cock says – reply to this

Good we need the business. Remember when 9/11 happen and all the businesses moved out of NYC to greener and safer places. Well same thing in reverse. WELCOME TO NYC….BITCHES.
Besides how could you film a NY scene and not be in NY
plus maybe they need to correct certain things about people from Queens Because people from Queens NEVER EVER EVER say they are from Queens…they say,
"I'm from Jamaica, Ridgefield, Forest hills" People from Brooklyn "I'm from Brooklyn" so please get that straight UGLY BETTY & ENTOURAGE that erks me

i had no idea really the scope of tv production (sorry mpe engineering is a bit diff)..on the one hand i am happy as it will bring jobs to the ec, incl the dc area (soon i hope). on the other hand i feel for those getting put out, but really thats business…so c'mon arnie - make it competitive for the good of all!

  35. #35 - JM says – reply to this

Is this a joke? I mean, I feel bad for those folks who lost their jobs, but are we really supposed to think that the Governor of California should be luring MORE tv production to the area? I mean, how many shows, movies, etc. are produced in SoCal? Is it even proportionate? Does it matter at all that Ugly Betty is totally based in NYC?
The amount of money made in Los Angeles and Hollywood I AM SURE is more than all of these other areas COMBINED. If I was a California taxpayer, I would be LIVID if my legislature worried about "growing" the California show business. Even writing that sounds dumb.

  36. #36 - MoPo says – reply to this

If these people are really losing their jobs, why are they wasting money on an ad in Variety? When they don't have money for botox in a couple of months, they'll look back and regret placing this stupid ad.

  37. #37 - just sayin says – reply to this

actually, the playing field might be levelled if movie/tv productions took place ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY

  38. #38 - Shut up hippie says – reply to this

Typical hit and run job on the guy because of the letter before his name, that being 'R' for Republican. This guy is an amazing person who is not only multifaceted, but was able to SAVE California from tragedy when Govenor Grey Davis, YES a Democrat, took an abundant surplus, and pissed it all away and caused an even greater, chasm-like deficit. Since taking office Arine has done wonderful things for California and is even open to more socially liberal ideas, giving Republicans the reputation that DO deserve for the most part no thanks to pricks like the religious right who make all the right look like bigots.

This is just typical extreme leftist hate speech and looking for an excuse to crucify a republican for simply being one. Sad, so sad Perez. I'm more a lib than a repub, but even I can see you have fallen so hard for the extreme left that you don't realize your own biases.

  39. #39 - just sayin says – reply to this

actually, the playing field might be levelled if movie/tv productions took place ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY. That way local economies, be they NYC or Podunk, Texas, would benefit from all of those services described in the ad. The environmental toll that the entertainment industry makes on southern california is staggering. Where do you think all the water comes from to supply the desert metropolis? What about all the CARS CARS CARS? I'm just saying, it would seem more fair to spread that kind of economic boon to many other places, rather than keep it in one place. I lived in LA for 3 years, not connected in any way to "the industry" and after the partying and fun were over, I left. I can't understand why anyone would want to live there except for the industry, and even then, it just seems selfish.

  40. #40 - JET says – reply to this

Hey, they should move production to Pittsburgh. A lot cheaper than La La Land, NYC or Canada. Plus tons of Hollywood Movie Crews already live and work here 24/7. Other Film & TV production crews are moving to Pittsburgh, why not Ugly Betty's?

  43. #43 - Dave says – reply to this

You are a hippocrite Perez, you side with the writers and actors whose strikes will be even more devastating to the the economy than productions shooting elsewhere. A complete shutdown of the industry that is the life blood of Southern California because, somehow, a minimum of $759.00 plus residuals for life is some how on fair pay to sit in a trailer and eat and for a few minutes pretend you are someone else.

  44. #44 - samich says – reply to this

Great! Movie and TV productions companies have been leaving in large numbers for a while. A lot of southern states are seeing a BOOM in productions as well as areas of the Northeast. I say great, California is a cess pool at best. Papperazzi won't be allowed to operate in the vast majority of the Country. When Mel Gibson was filming " The Patriot" I saw more then one Cop look the other way towards photog beat downs and really enjoyed it.

  45. #45 - b4 says – reply to this

WOW!!! I had NO idea that Ugly Betty kept the whole state of California employed!!! I have to make sure I have this right….Ugly Betty is the ONLY show filmed in California. No other shows will be filmed there that need things like flowers, police, lumber, fabric, jewelry, vehicles, insurance, set jobs, etc. These business/jobs were created and exist solely due to the demand of the Ugly Betty show???

PLEASE!!!! It's California/Hollywood! There are always going to be television shows coming and going for any number of reasons (cancellation???). These people are just looking for a scapegoat instead of looking for a new job. You know when you work in this industry that a television show does not last forever and eventually you will have to move on to another set, another show, another location. Get over it and pick up the want ads!!!

Who Cares!! People always want to blame the government and never their own lazy asses! if you're company is dependant on one show, that's your bad business plan!!

If you wanna blame someone besides yourself, blame the show's production company! blame the stars with their high salaries. i bet between them, they could come up with the extra money to offset those taxes. but they won't, they'd rather just endorse the democrat who'se gonna raise everyones taxes meanwhile they're finding ways to skirt theirs…

  49. #49 - cros says – reply to this

Does anyone here realize the irony of this posting and hollywood? Tax breaks are what gives business an incentive to expand, move , etc. Democrats stifle that shit. I'm sure republicans in the state of California, if they weren't such a minority, could have dealt with this issue before entire productions picked up and moved to a more "tax-friendly" state. Democrats tax more to spend more on things like welfare and schools while republicans tax less to help companies and JOBS grow, so individuals who WANT to work can make more money and give less to the government. At the same time republicans keep spending down so they don't have to tax more people to pay for more welfare. Put that on your blog you idiots. BTW Barack wants a "global tax" to pay for 3rd world countries whose dictators steal legitimate aid from NGOs, the UN, and foreign governments.

Re: dlish – Do you realize that New York is FULL OF DEMOCRATS!!! Bloomberg didn't pass the tax breaks without the support of the city council which is FILLED with Democrats. He is not a dictator, nor is Arnold. And Bloomberg is hardly a right wing Republican. He only ran as a Republican to get elected since the Democratic party is a bit of a machine in New York and running as a Republican assured him a spot on the ticket. He was a Democrat for years before that, and now he is an independent. Talk about tax and spend, look at Bush, he may have cut taxes on the extremely wealthy but that hasn't stopped him from SPENDING , SPENDING, SPENDING us into the greatest debt the country has ever seen. And Reagan increased taxes on Social Security and FICA for most Americans while cutting the rate on the richest people in the country. We are still paying off the interest of the debt that 30 years of "don't tax but spend" Republican economics and it only going to get worse thanks to GW Bush's reckless spending.

What's a governator to do when the state has been so bankrupted by millions of illegal aliens that it can't even pay its bills anymore? They're closing hospitals in California, offering a tax cut to Ugly Betty in order to save 300 jobs is likely not high on the list of places to put what little money the state still has. How about asking everyone who lives here to actually pay taxes? Then perhaps L.A. will regain some of its status as a company town.

  72. #72 - Blackwells Semen says – reply to this

So rather than help each other out or try to drum up business elsewhere, they decide to take an (expensive) ad out in Variety and blow thousands of dollars that could have been put to much better use than to bitch out the Governor, which they could have done for free on the news had they played their cards right???

    What losers!!!

How much money is enough money? Why isn't the show supporting its staff?
Don't ever get between a hit show and the lifeboat. Why blame Arnold? Everything is a choice.

Arnold has tried to pass tax credits for filming in California but every time he does it, critics say, "all the money goes to high paid producers, blah, blah, blah". That is bunk. It allows them to finance production here instead of going to other states or countries. The people who benefit most from these tax credits are NOT the producers but the people who get employed by the producers and the people and businesses who support the production. So, please don't blame Arnold, blame the people who've shot done his proposals for tax credits for filming in California.

perez, you really exhibit how simple minded you really are sometimes. this is one of those times. sometimes the short term damage is the sacrifice you make for something great in the long run. it's obvious arnold is trying to clean up the state & LA in particular. rudy guliani did this amongst initial great protest. now, everyone LOVES what he did & are benefiting from it. california, as it is, is a cesspool. a few people may be losing their jobs, but the state as a whole is losing money in tourism & investments. i'm in the southeast & there are constant running commercials encouraging people to visit cali, the commercial featuring arnold & maria. he wants the riff raff out & if i were in cali, i would be fully supporting him in moving them out. by getting rid of the trash, he's attempting to raise the value again. you should be commending him. besides that, where some people in cali are losing jobs, people in new york, nc, & wherever else they mentioned will be gaining. old hollywood died long ago.

    Re: Ratta !

Thank you Ratta, and everyone else that touched on this issue. As a Native New Yorker, I am sick to death of Toronto, LA, etc. used as a stand-in for NYC. Gimme a freakin' break. It's high time that a show that cashes in on NYC's cachet actually FILMS in NYC. Cead mile failte Ugly Betty. A great show that will now have a bit more authenticity added. Oh, and as another poster said, freakin' no one that lives in Queens says that they;re from Queens. I live in Long Island City, so that's what I say, or "LIC". You from Ridgewood? You say that. Thanks for bringing that up; it always bothered me when they said otherwise on the show.

It's certainly GOOD news for Vanessa Williams, whose other children and family live in NY… and she's also from there and has a home there!

The reason we Californians pay so much in taxes is because we pay for all the immigrants here… plain and simple. There's something SO wrong happening in CA … other states, including bigger ones like TX don't pay as many taxes as we do. It's ridiculous! I'm deperate to move out of here, but I can't. :o (

funny we will all be sad because the people lost there jobs after NY cut a better deal but we will all support a writers strike and possibly an actors strike and say it is the right thing when those strikes put the same people and business out of job.

As a union member that has worked in TV in California and currently NY…these people in LA that think the only alternative to losing their job is unemployment must not think very highly of their skills. And yes, some of us are sick of shows that pretend they are NYC or only shoot a few minutes a season here and cut it into there LA footage; i.e. CSI:NY….not to mention the TV movie of Gulliani after 9/11 that was filmed in TORONTO!

All I have to say is fuck Arnold. 300 people in the entertainment business losing their jobs, what about the 70,000 teachers that just got fired in California because Arnold's dumb ass went over budget so decided to pull 6 billion dollars from the states education budget. I just got my Masters and teaching credentials and can't find a fucking teaching job! He is a dumb fuck and so are the people that voted for him thinking that he could really do something for California.

  95. #95 - lulu says – reply to this

, 80% or more of all show are still filmed in the lovely state of california and remember you live in a free market economy and its the same country so just because one persons losing a job another person in NY just got employed, the film biz, like most is fickle, there is no job security anymore its a dog eat dog world in every industry, stop whining and start hustling for a new gig.

Arnold may have his issues but there is no bigger MONEYWHORE then MAYOR BLOOMBERG! So much money is going into NYC via tolls, taxes, federal money the city never sees, raping of cops and firemen salaries not to mention the closings of many firehouses throughout the city (sort of strange since the closings happened after 9/11)? Now television shows and movie filmings?? Hey Bloomberg you think you might want to share some of that money the people??? But what do expect from 2 WANNA be BUSHES… There seems to be many of them running around lately… McCain!!
