Whatever it takes!

Gotta publicize the album, right?

According to reports, Coldplay fans can own the band's new release, Viva La Vida, for half the usual price.

Chris Martin and company just announced a buy one get one free offer on Internet downloads.

Martin said, “Buy one get one free, it comes from working in Kwik Save (British budget supermarket), I think. As I said before nobody buys albums any more, certainly no body buys full albums and we’ve made an album that you have to have from start to finish.”

Interesting, but…record stores must be PISSED.

Why buy the release in the stores when you can get it online for half the cost, right?

I dont think there is a problem with their strategy, I mean, Radiohead did something like that, NIN actually gave free their whole album… they are thinking in new alternatives…

People will buy it in shops because they want to own the proper booklet etc… buying music online is stupid.

      ARE.
      Coldplay ARE the best.
Group. Not singular. Regardless of what Chris Martin wants us to think.
Mind you, I can't really talk about typing correctly…

Chris Martin is so full of shit. He lives in his mansions and talks about the rich and establishment, blah blah. Oh yea, he hates America, our capitalism, blah blah. Meanwhile he married an extremely rich darling of NY and Hollywood and owns homes all over the world. Mr. Green is full of shit and annoying. Talent doesn't give you the right to bash other people who like to live well too. Go back and stay in England, Chris, America doesn't need your self righteous need to be relevant, and stay there, please.

this is the best news i've heard all week. the united states is all about getting as much money out of consumers as they can and we deserve a little break with how shitteous our economy has gotten. THANK YOU CHRIS! I'll still be buying the album because i'm a huge fan and i want a hard copy…and unlike the horrible pop one hit wonders that are everywhere lately, this band will still sell tons of albums because its QUALITY all the way through. not shit.

oh and PepperPot: Chris Martin may be part of the wealthy establishment (and he earned it—it wasn't handed to him) but he does a LOT of work for charity and no one can't deny that.

I don't download music. I prefer to have an actual CD in my hands, with cover art, lyrics, and all the wonderful extras that bands include in the real product. I like to know that if my computer explodes, my external harddrive goes haywire, or my MP3 player gets tossed into the ocean… I still have my music.

I'm sad to see the majority of people line up for iTunes, and completely ignore buying the complete full album from stores. The only good thing I can see about downloading music… is that bands CAN release their own stuff, on their own website, without the huge overhead of producing CD's, or finding labels who will sign them.

I love Coldplay. It just makes me sad to hear Chris Martin so wholeheartedly announce that nobody buys whole albums anymore. Yes, there are people who do!

I LOVE COLDPLAY!!! hey Perez, post their new single, "Viva La Vida". it's really good. even much better than "Violet Hill" (although i am very partial to the latter… :P )

      21

Coldplay is a rip-off of Sting.

Their music is bland, boring, and just plain crappy.

The record label is denying that this promotion even exists. It was taken out of context from the fact that two songs on the record are hidden tracks - in the case of two of the tracks you're getting two for one - not all of them. stupid media.

    24. whatever says – reply to this

      24

Radiohead showed that the people that download music are generally not the same people that buy a physical CD.

Their release did not suffer in store sales despite releasing it on the website as a "pay what you think it's worth" download.

    25. kENNY says – reply to this

      25

I think it still all depends. I personally only buy online if there are a few good songs from an album that I like. If the album is solid, that is when I will get the physical CD; downloads doesn't replace reading the credits of a good album.

Can't wait for the album! If you pre-order it on i-tunes you can get the track 'Viva la Vida' straight away… it's really good!

Love them (especially the guitarist!) and their music. Can't wait for them to start touring - they are brilliant live.

    29. brianwilsonisgod says – reply to this

      29

Um Perez, have you actually read the interview this quote comes from?! It's not a 'two-for-one offer' - Chris Martin was just explaining why a couple of the tracks on their new album are listed as 'Lovers in Japan/Reign of Love' and 'Yes/Chinese Sleep Chant' - he said he thought it would be nice if the people who downloaded those songs individually actually got two songs on one track…

      35

screw Coldplay. I like there songs, but since reading the stupid buy the album at half price online, but not in stores story, I just smashed their cds with a hammer that I own, and won't buy them or any new ones again.

I support the rise of the music industry, not the fall. Buying cds helps it rise, buying digital versions off the internet makes it fall as they are too cheaply priced, and kills retailers.
