excellent! If we just buried people without embalming in cardboard coffins, they'd help enrich the soil at the very least. I'm very opposed to the funeral industry and their markups on "products" and monopoly on death. The laws are too strict, but I'm sure those laws are encouraged by these morticians who jack up prices to make dead people look like dead people with makeup on. Pleasantly surprised you had this topic on your site, Perez. I know it's for the "eeewwww" factor, but preserving the dead in $10,000 caskets in concrete/steel liners is a waste of money. You'd be better off donating the funeral expenses you WOULD have paid to a charity. Look at how much money we waste on the dead!

Mindy, the way you have referenced seems much more respectful of the body and mindful of it's place in the circle of all life. I would rather see a tree growing from a loved ones remains-how beautifully symbolic is that?

    55. Mel Huckabee says – reply to this

      55

This is actually a much more eco-friendly way of disposing of bodies, as opposed to Cremation, which to me is much more brutal, and takes a bigger toll on the environment. It's a very scientific process and you can read all about it in Mary Roach's bestseller 'STIFF: The Curious Live s of Human Cadavers.' In Sweden they're developing a technique of making the body into a fertilizer of sorts and the idea is that you can plant a tree and use a loved one's fertilized remains as the soil that helps it grow. That's an interesting way to consider reincarnation.

    65. ex-funeral insider says – reply to this

      65

      Re: Hayworth Honey
How is it "honorable" or "respectful" to bury your loved one in a steel case or burn them in a furnace? We honor the memory of the person, not their physical body. Burial and cremation, as crude as it sounds, are just 2 methods of body disposal. Heavily populated areas are running out of spaces in which to bury bodies, and too many people don't see cremation as a viable alternative because they are uninformed or too hung up on cultural or religious beliefs.

As an ex-funeral care worker, I think this method is neither better nor worse than burial or cremation. The deceased is memorialized not in the way their body is disposed of, but during the funeral or memorial service. If you actually read the article, you will see that there is still some solid remains left behind that the family members can choose to bury or keep in an urn, much like the "leftovers" from cremation.

With the way our environment is going down the tubes, it is important to find alternatives to burial and cremation, and I think this process is a step in the right direction. Besides, medical centers are already doing it with their waste, why not extend the same resources to the funeral industry?

    79. Daniella says – reply to this

      79

First of all, this is not something to offended over. I work in the funeral industry, and in the south this is slowly becoming popular. The bodies are not completely dissolved, they leave bone fragments rather similar to those reduced by cremation.

People can choose to dispose of themselves any way they choose. This would not be my first choice for disposition but it is however "green" or whatever the hell all you liberal hippy tree huggers are all about these days.

Ok, there's nothing offensive about this story. I guess being a funeral service student in FL does help. Truely this is no different than cremation. At the end of the day you can still take your love one home in a urn or place the urn in a nitch in the cemetary. Either way this way seems a little less harmful on the enviroment than creation. I think we should have a full range of choices. COOL!!!!! :)

Wow-so much alarmist babbling!! ANYONE who has water come out of a pipe in their sink is using water that has been treated for feces, urine, blood, vomit, etc. There is no magic water vortex we feed from. Its the same water that has been on the planet for all of existence. Do you have a funeral home in your zip code? Guess what!! You use water that was carried through sewage lines that a funeral home legally and reasonably uses to wash away all fluids. NO VIRUS,INLCUDING HIV, survives out of the hosts body after death. It all can and is purified well for reuse. If you are bathing your baby in water that has dead people in it, check to make sure you helped Grandma out of the bathtub last night.

Re: Mel Huckabee – Everyone should read Mary Roach's "STIFF" It gives a very "matter of fact" history of how man has dealt with his dead- much of it is not pretty- but it is a necessary fact of life. We need to stop feeding the funeral parlor beast, and get creative and efficient before we're broke and "buried" under our respected dead relatives.

    88. DLR says – reply to this

      88

Errrrr, I got images of people melting into puddles of goo and going down drains. *shudders*

There's all sorts of ways to handle things when someone dies. Bury in the ground in a non-biodegradable coffin, bury in the ground in a biodegradable manner (i.e., wrapped in a shroud, etc.), cremate, and now dissolving in lye.

Ah, the decisions, the decisions! Just yet another thing to ponder about dying. :P

I mean, how much more disease do we want our bodies taking in? hmm

    90. Jenna says – reply to this

      90

eventually we will run out of space to bury bodies so advancments in this field only seem fitting

    91. Daniella says – reply to this

      91

Some of you people really need to educate yourselves. First of all, some viruses CAN survive outside of a host, ESPECIALLY if they have the ability to encapsulate. Secondly, the funeral industry is doing everyone a favor by disinfecting our sewers. (When we drain during embalming, it's going into the sewage systems via drain from the funeral home, some funeral homes even have septic tanks…so that wouldn't be an issue) Formaldehyde is has the dual purpose for disinfection as well as preservation. YOU ARE NOT COMPLETELY REDUCING THE REMAINS WHEN USING LYE. There are bone fragments, it is simply reducing viscera down, skin, adipose tissue ect. It's giving the public more options, it's "eco-friendly" and it will save more space. Cremation is becoming more popular with time, but how is dissolving what can be dissolved in lye, any different than incinerating it and having particles thrown into the air??? Some of you guys are close-minded, ignorant people. No one said you had to do it, it's just an option. Like I said before in my previous post, not my first choice for disposition, but it's still an option nontheless. By the way, I don't drink water from faucets…period.

i'm really not sure how i feel about this one…

      lets see…

i'm drinking and bathing in my loved ones now?
i've got a big glob of goo sitting on my mantel and my children's children are too curious, so they grab a chair and get it down and start mushing their hands in it and putting it all over my living room?
well, it is environmentally helpful and that maybe sounds good?
ladies and gentlemen, the next horror movie?
it may be environmentally helpful, but what about when it goes "down the drain" and it's in our oceans with our seafood, and our seafood breath it, then we eat them?

these are just a few questions running through my mind…

scientist have no respect for religion…

    94. Court says – reply to this

      94

Oh come on Perez, that is NOT offensive! This is actually a really fascinating idea and maybe it's about time that we replace some of our archaic burial practices. If it's environmentally friendly, then what else do the dead really have to worry about? People need to stop being so damned superstitious, it only makes them look STUPID! I'm pretty sure that once we're dead this shit doesn't matter.
