The first bomb of the "summer" box office season!
Speed Racer barely took in $20 million at the U.S. Box Office this past weekend.
The film reportedly took in $20.2 million, but rival studios think Warner Bros. is lying about that number, so they can claim a second place finish.
Iron Man came in first for a second weekend in a row, taking in $50.5 mill.
And, the Ashton Kutcher / Cameron Diaz flick, What Happens In Vegas came in third (or possibly second) with $19.7 million.
We hope WB isn't lying about Speed's take. That would be soooo shady!

It'd be shady, but it's done all the time. When a film's only one or two million away from a barrier ($20 million, 30, 40, etc), they'll usually round up to make that first impression sound better.

Iron Man was amazing! and I'm 40! Speed Racer totally sucked (had to take my kids - on Mother's Day too) but I think it is the type of film that will do well overseas. SpeedRacer had to be the worst film I've seen all year.
the speed racer movie is really good, don't judge until you see because yeah the preview looked silly, and the first 8 minutes looks very sesame street, but once you hit the first race, its the shite! what is it that people got against color? and not to rip iron man which i've seen, it seems like the entire media is so against a colorful movie, and wants us to be depressed. most movies use the same depressing color scheme, blacks, whites, grays, browns and iron man is no exception. and iron man comes off as propaganda, i mean afghanistan? the only person who can defest terrorism is iron man? speed racer is a color fest, and it really is alot to take in, but isn't life in color? and the story is anti-capitalist, (reviews have actually called it this) which i guess doesn't work with the media conglomerates that run the studios. all of wachowski's movies are along these lines, but they get ripped by the pro-war iron man, yes its pro-war, and that america can dominate granted we build a super suit that only we have access to, please open your minds and see speed racer before the shite talking.

I really have to wonder if your constant venom for this movie played a small part in it's less-than-thrilling opening. I doubt it was gonna be a smash and I had no interest in it, but you raked this thing over the coals.

Let me tell you what Warner is up to by lying about the box office numbers fo Speed Racer. If they can claim that Speed Racer is no. 2 at the box office, they will attempt to spin it in ads and claim that it is the number 1 family film in America as a marketing ploy to deceive the public…studios do it all the time so you'll believe that a film which is actually number 2 or lower, is really number 1 at the box office: Can you picture the producers of Everything Stays In Vegas duping people by saying it is the number 1 comedy in America? Well, technically it is, but your ears hear number 1 movie–it's a subtle form of sublminal brainwashing. However, it will serve Warner Brothers right, for lying about their Speed Racer B.O. numbers, if the producers behind Iron Man offer them no mercy and claim the title of the number 1 family film for themselves!!!
Ask anyone whom see this flick and they'll tell you "I Loved it!". Why it did so bad? Iron-Man duh!!!

Speed Racer was good. Really good. So good, I went to go see it twice. The effects were amazing, the acting wasn't too bad, and they managed to make a pretty good replica of the cartoon. That cartoon was my favorite show when I was younger, and they did a really good job of making it into a live action movie. So go see a movie before you criticize it, Perez. If you went to go see it and you didn't like it, fine then. But if you didn't, then stop being such a jackass and see it before you call it bad.
I don't know why all of the "cynics" are dissing this movie. I just saw it and if was FUCKING FANTASTIC! The visuals were stunning, and this movie took me back to the time I was 12 and had a ball of my time with my "Hot Wheels" track, making my cars do all types of stunts. This movie was an excellent throwback to those simpler, and uncomplicated times where good was good, and evil was evil.
It's too goddamn bad America doesn't understand or comprehend this movie, and we suffer from this lack of it. The main message is stay true to your family and yourself, and good things will come your way.
I do plan on seeing this in IMAX as well, and I don't give a fuck what you or the critics say about this AWESOME film!

This movie was unexpectedly awesome!!! It certainly has become one of my favorites! It's really exciting, funny, and touching in some parts. And did I mention it's just visually stunning?! Go watch it!

I thought I would be bad as well, but it is actually a really entertaining kids movie. Like a higher tech, better acted Power Rangers type of vibe.
I don't know why this movie wasn't marketed more straight to the kids ( ala Disney Channel & Nickelodeon ). That's where they messed up.
I saw Speed Racer late last night after hours of studying and found it enthralling. The pace and color palette were unreal, and John Goodman, Matt Fox and Christina Ricci all did a bang up job. It is a shame that most critics lost sight of how fun the movie was in an effort to find a deeper meaning. Hopefully more people will take the opportunity to see this on a big screen and become totally absorbed in the cotton-candy kaleidoscope.

I can understand why you and a bunch of your following might not enjoy Speed Racer, but I totally enjoyed it with my six-year old and 19-year old sons…a great ending to Mother's Day! I enjoyed Speed Racer as a kid in all its weirdness…loved how this movie recreated that feeling while making it visually current and without tired irony like so many other recreations have. hopefully it will do much better in the international market ! here in the uk, the situation doesn't looks positive though. Actually, i was positively surprised with the film ! Great visual , colourful, great ! And to be honest I never watched a single episode of the cartoon… It's a shame that one of the few summer movies that I do like, the critics publish bad reviews. I was expecting a boring action film, but instead I got a fantastic and colourful (hehe) adventure.
